Lots of people wanted them executed because they were thought to have committed the crime. They were convicted after all. It wasn't until the actual rapist confessed that they were exonerated. Even after that exoneration there are still people, even to this day that still believe in their guilt.

What happened with the Central Park 5 happened in the late 80's early 90's (cases lasted until '92 iirc). DNA being used as evidence was still fairly new and not yet considered reliable. The first case to ever use DNA as evidence was in 1986, the Central Park 5 incident happened in 1989. DNA didn't really start being considered as reliable until the late 90's early 2000's.
