I wonder if next, California will pass a law that all hotels, and public rest rooms must carry 2-ply super soft toilet paper.

The public's asses must only be kept clean by soft, plush toilet paper.

    My "mysterious source" was in the OP's link;

The problem is that $30 Million dollars is not alot to liberals. If you were to say maybe 300 Billion, than they might see it as bothersome.

Not at all, I see a big difference between safety and comfort. My chair at work could be leather with better back support, every keyboard could be ergonomic and come with pads to rest my wrists on... but they don't and if I want these things I don't expect my employer to provide them.

There are solutions that don't require legislating sheets... This is a job that requires physical labor and aches and pains are a normal part of that, what next? A machine for every stone mason so his back doesn't ache after a hard days work?

Yup, it does provide a starting point for discussing the costs but given the inherit bias of the group it should likely be taken with a grain of salt. One could juxtapose that argument however and say that the amount of pain incurred is being exaggerated as well...

The argument your using can swing both ways.

Elastic bands around sheets should get the eco-nut howling. This could get interesting.

While I think the law itself is kind of silly, "authoritarian" is a rather hyperbolic choice of word for this thread title.

So you don't think a bump in hotel room rates will drive conferences elsewhere (to another state)? And what will that cost the already bankrupt state of Cali in sales tax?

Cali lawmakers appear to be drueling idiots.

In keeping with your social justice screed, I hereby demand that legislation be passed that requires that you pay me $5 per post you write.

It is a hardship on me that I am forced to endure reading tripe.

You support the flat sheet legislation, so - if you were consistent - you'll support this.

I'll PM you my PayPal addy. Or you can stop writing posts. Your choice.

Exactly...lefties defend 100's of millions in entitlement fraud every year with terms like "statistically insignificant"

Then claim soaking the "greedy rich" for more revenue is the path to enlightenment.

    They're frauds....utter frauds.

Well, what's the use in reading anything Glenn Beck has to say? Good grief! Which is shown by actually reading it -- the $15 million figure is as sourced elsewhere, the $30 million figure is not sourced at all, indicating the possibility that he just made it up. So, we know the $15 million claim belongs to an actual person, who is actually involved in the industry (we knew that without the Beck link). The $30 million figure remains bogus, even after the Beck link.

At this point I should note that it is incumbent upon those making specific claims to source and quote those specific claims (now I'm speaking to you, not Beck). If you expect others to dig thru some link made by another poster to validate a specific figure, you are going to lose the debate on technical grounds. That may mean nothing to you, but it does to those who actually know how to make a successful argument.

Staking a claim on a mountain of bull(*)(*)(*)(*) is much, much easier than validating it with facts -- which is why we see so little of the latter in the average right wing post.

It wouldn't be voluntary, what else would you call it? What's the PC term for liberal authoritrianism? I'm dying to know...

The problem is that the $30 million has not been shown to exist, so you are basing your argument on what is unproven and quite possibly a lie, which certainly seems to be a right wing pattern -- the truth is simply irrelevant to the argument presented.

Five pages later, if the thread continues that long, I'm sure the right will still be using the $30 million figure as fact -- just as you did above.

Here we go again. sparks just saying things don't exist or don't happen just out of nowhere.

If you truly believe that sheets should be in the hands of government, than there is no turning back. You are a communist.

This is a work-place safety issue. It's currently proposed legislation.

It's interesting how the "freedom-loving" right-wing gets so pissed off about this yet Republicans trying to require criminal investigations when a woman miscarriages barely even gets a mention from them.

Workplace safety is one thing, requiring private businesses to put a certain type of sheet on the bed is another.

Taxes aren't voluntary either. Does that mean all taxation is authoritarian?

Its another step into business by an overbearing government. Workplace safety concerns could be addressed in a myriad of other methods, not by having the state step in and force product changes by private businesses.

How many documented injuries have resulted from those items?

I'm sure that there are already certain safety regulations that do benefit a stone mason, just as I'm sure that there are labor-saving devices that exist to help him to his job today that were not present 200 years ago. Such does not exist for a maid, who is exactly doing her job with regards to changing bedsheets as it was done 200 years ago, except that the mattresses probably weigh four or five times as much.

Further, the stone-mason is a sufficiently skilled and in-demand craft that he can negotiate workplace improvements with his employer. Do tell us that a maid has a similar negotiating position.

    Not really.
    Code:
Robert Harrison, a doctor of occupational medicine at the University of
California at San Francisco, testified that the “repetitive and forceful
exertion” of bedmaking and other duties makes hotel maids more susceptible
to lower-back and shoulder injuries than most workers in manufacturing jobs.
Lifting the corner of some luxury hotel beds, he said, exceeds what the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers safe lifting.

“I think [the law] would make a great difference,” said Dr. Susan Buchanan of
the University of Illinois at Chicago, whose paper on hotel-worker injuries
    was cited in testimony.

Well, unless you're against all taxation, I guess that means that both of us support some degree of authoritarianism.

It's starting to look that way...

Arthritis and RSI injuries are very common amongst software developers and most occupations that require lots of computer usage.

Well she's a union member so she has the power of collective bargaining on her side, so I'd say her position is adequate to make such demands.

Also working conditions aren't the same for maids as they were in the past... or do you not remember mentioning being on hands and knees scrubbing floors? they do have mops and brooms, they just want better ones. As someone who's worked with a few brick masons... if they don't like the trowels they are provided (and they often don't) they purchase their own... I suggest these maids do the same.

Is this not from a doctor arguing on behalf of the union? Weren't you just making an argument regarding bias about the numbers the hotel presented. Seems like your trying to have your cake and eat it too....

At $30 per room, amortized over one year, the increase in room rates would be 16 cents at 50% occupancy.
