Do me a favor, Mak. Check out Sean Stephenson and see if you still feel that way. This guy is one of the most amazing people I've ever come across. He totally changed the way I look at life. There have and always will be unique and extraordinary examples or instances that amaze and defy anything or everything. Sadly those are the rare exceptions, while scores of other outcomes of similar situations amount to little more than suffering or tragedy. I ask you is the exception worth the suffering of the multitude?
So you think you wouldn't worry just as much about a child without a handicap? You don't have kids do you?
Actually how the child reacts to the teasing is a much bigger factor than any disability, and it's the parents' job to teach the child to deal with it so as not to encourage it. A life without sight, hearing and mobility. What's your point? IOW, it's all about you. What a surprise.
From the description, it sounds like he has that brittle bones disease, where the bones are so weak they break easily. We have a guy over here with the same disease, although he's a pain in the butt. Not like this guy. It looks like he has made something of his life, which is a great thing. But personally, if I knew my kid would have that disease, I wouldn't go ahead with the pregnancy. While Sean might be a happy man, he is just one of many.
I would worry about my kids regardless. I do not have kids yet, but I would love to have some. Being a parent is all about worrying. But I would worry more about a child who was disabled.
Do us a favor. Put on a blindfold, put mufflers over your ears and go and sit in a chair, and don't move. See how long you can last. And if a life would give birth to a disabled kid, it would be all about them, and their wants, wouldn't it?
I can't say either way whether I would have or would not have. I was lucky in that both of my pregnancies were easy, both my children healthy ... which was lucky, because thats what I expected they would be .. and I don't know how I would have coped. I think I would have, but I don't know how I would have. To go back to the OP - my pregnancies were like Margot's - being fit, healthy, active etc certainly helped. Wanting my children also was important - even though both weren't exactly planned, both were very much wanted. on a personal level, I found that pregnancy was also a time when I thought a lot, about a lot of things including life, love and relationships - including my relationship with my mother - and what it means to be a mother. so both were periods of personal growth. to go back to having a child with disabilities - including physical disabilities and delayed development. I find the parent's attitude to the child with the disability shapes how others see that child as well - so for the most part, my regard for these children has been pretty high, and of course I think the world is a better place for them being here ... most of the time. There are other cases where the children have had severe disabilities (not brittle bones - but mental incapacity that basically means you have a strapping 19 year old in nappies, and a whole range of serious risk issues associated with care of this person). I have wondered whether it might have been better had those children not been born - because of the impact I have seen on the families - especially the other children. I think its up to the individual. If I were faced with apregnancy, knowing the child would have a serious condition that would require full time round the clock care, I would have to think about what that would mean, not just to me, but to other family members as well. It would be a tough call to either continue, or to terminate.
what an appropriate choice of words for a deatheater...too bad the only person you intend to kill are helpless infants.
and here we have a perfect example of why we think deatheaters consider pregnancy 'inconvenient'. and here also is another example of the crudeness of the American left, who don't understand the concept of decency....seriously? discussing their toilet activities..disgusting. Bender, just trying to cut you off here, we don't need to know the color and consistancy of your daily bowel movements, ok? that's something we call "inappropriate" for public. Too bad your mother didn't explain that to you when you were a toddler.
Whaler is not required to share personal information with you, quit harassing her/him! and just fyi, using the BOLD on everything comes across like all caps. VERY offputting.
now we promote mothers to the status of gods? with the power of life and death over their children? no wonder we have women stoning their children to death, sawing infants arms off...they are being told by the deatheaters that they are all powerful!
I almost feel bad for her. What a hard life she is going to have...believing that there are guarantees and the possibility of 'perfection'...reality will slap her pretty hard.
here is another perfect example of why we consider women having abortions as just doing it for convenience sake... you would kill a baby so you wouldn't have to 'worry' about it, you may feel a twinge of regret so tearing it to pieces is better? eight weeks ten weeks
oh? and tell me, HOW does one quantify 'worrying'? does worrying about your child being teased about being handicapped hurt more than worrying that your child might be teased because he's gay? is worrying about your child being teased because he's gay more time consuming than worrying that your daughter is dating someone you don't like? how exactly do you measure worry?
Next time can you refer to abortion as vodermortion? In a thread about pregnancy, you don't expect to hear about someone's uterus? How odd. You know pregnancy involves a uterus, correct? And vaginae (clutch those pearls)? Also, menstruation isn't a bowel movement. This is why I can't take people like you seriously when you try to discuss anything biology related. Too bad your mother didn't make sure you passed bio 101.
A waste of time, seeing an newborn is not able to miss what it never had. I suppose attributing selfish motives to everyone has a certain value if one wishes to avoid consciousness of one's own selfishness.
And here I was thinking I'd get praise for being prepared to be responsible for my actions, after having dirty, naughty sex! Women DO have the power of life and death over their unborn. Sorry that doesn't sit right with you.
Why would anyone give birth to a child who is only going to sit in a chair and drool? Not me. Anyone who did should be arrested for child cruelty.
