You have visited Russia at the end of 90s. Though your opinion on a role of a mafia in Russian life is exaggerated I can agree these years were not the best time in our history. If you'd visit Russia in the middle of 90s, I think you would find a situation much worse than which you saw 10 years ago. I hope now you understand why Russians hate 90s and mister Yeltsin so much.

I'll correct you. 70 years of socialism. I do not want to go deep into ideological details. All what I want is to note always there were people of different belief in Russia. There were who wanted communism and those guys who wanted capitalism. There were even those who grieved about Russian empire. Though many people now regret for disorder of the USSR.

It reminds me a tour of the dumps. If you are searching something for sigh-seeings, you visit Hermitage or Peterhof. If you want to find a bunch of dung you are going to a toilet or a dump. There are a lot of such goods there. I am already tired to give here statistics proving that Russia is far from being the most drinking country of the world. We are even not in top 10. Personally I meet those men which work on 2 or 3 jobs to support family. I worked on 3 jobs at these years too. I can dig out and lay out here a lot of dung about the USA too. Believe me this is not difficultly to do it using the net. But it does not mean that all Americans live drunk in cardboard boxes in the streets and are engaged in begging. Does it?

I do not want to offend anybody, but this is the most funny opinion about orthodox christianity which I have ever heard. If orthodox Christians do not sing Holy Jesus and do not dance Boogie-woogie in churches like the American sectarians do, it does not mean that Orthodoxy is not christianity. Indeed christianity has many branches. The orthodox christianity is one of those directions which in the greater degree have kept old Christian traditions and rituals incorporated in the days of Roman empire. This is why it is called the orthodox one. Though there are other directions keeping ancient traditions: Armenian Apostolic Church for example, Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, Catholicism at last. As to Protestantism. Though at the epoch of Reformation it was declared as the return to traditions of the first Christians, but in the greater degree it was caused by the political reasons and not every Protestant sect corresponds to spirit of the first Christians indeed. You even have sects which already almost have nothing common with real christianity: Jehovah's Witnesses for example or Mormons. Yes I believe in God, but I'm not very religious man. And religion, its history is more relevant to my research interest. I am glad that my daughter now studies religious philosophy at university. Her future speciality the philosopher - expert on religions. It is useful to have the secular expert on religions in family. You saw Russian churches, but you have not visited them. But if you would visit them you'd understood of nothing as divine service goes in unfamiliar language for you.

I'm not the missionary, moreover I already spoke to you trusting in the god I am not very religious person. Just for curiosity, the example of orthodox chanting in the honour of Jesus.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3b-A-Ig-54&feature=related"]Всякое дыхание да хвалит Господа - YouTube[/ame]

Approximately in this way looked the divine service and this music sounded more than a thousand years ago. Almost nothing has changed.

A learned a lot recently in quality Flemish TV-program "Back in the USSR" in which two journalists working for Flemish public TV went back to Russia after 20 years of fall of USSR and met up with their teacher that thaught them Russian in the '80s when they started working in USSR, average Russian folks and their dacha's, etc.

Also, interesting interviews with right-hand of PM Putin -- VERY INTERESTING!

Conclusion: Russians are better off now than in USSR.

As someone who visits this part of the world frequently and first visited St P in the mid seventies , your charming belief made me laugh out loudly .

The very rich and unbelievably rich are more numerous and might now account for around 3% .
When you consider the remainder you must not lose sight of :-
The gap between them and the super rich has grown exponentially .
The condition of the majority is terrible and at third world poverty levels .
All live in a unique system of complete Vertical power . This means that opportunities to move up the system are virtually non existent and will depend less and less on what you know , and more and more on whom you know .
The whole system is totally corrupt with Russia usually in around 180th place of the 185 countries polled . It is on a par with Somalia .
My advice is , love Russians , who can be as OK as most other world groups . But hate the system they operate in .
Go over and have a look for yourself and I don't mean just take guided tours around Moscow and St P City centres .You must live in a dump if you could seriously contemplate living and working there .

Why did you prefer to lost 10 minutes for writing this post? "I know nothing about Russia" would be more useful for everybody here.

    Dear Mister Agent ,
The infuriating thing about Westerners of certain backgrounds is that they know how to make up their own minds .
And they have developed this talent for sniffing out those who are just too desperate to prove Black is really White .
And then -- God they are awful people -- they know how to check material and can spot the disinformation , brow beating and shouting .
You are full of it Mister Agent . You have a lovely country you could be doing so much with , if you spent less time trying to prove to us that you are not really just another badly briefed and taught junior apologist .
Your best bet is to report back to my good friend Alex ( Bortnikov) and tell him to replace you fast with someone decent from the Officer class .

A trifle to erudite for you , Dutch ?
Why Americans don't limit themselves to Basket ball and attempted Rugby is forever puzzling .
    They say
    " No Pain , no Gain "
But for our poor old Yankee black sheep cousins , it is ,
"Too much strain , No brain "

LoL, spare me your so called "erudition"; whatever little grey matter you got under your hood is painfully inadequate for you to debate me...

Incidentally, your posts are full of grammatical and syntax mistakes; as an example, in "A trifle to erudite for you , Dutch" "to" should really be "too"

Yes , it does go rather quiet when someone arrives who knows much more than you do .So unfair because it leaves you unable to exchange in any sort of fact dominated discussion .
Yes , poor lads , it's horrible when a new boy walks in , who can knock you round the playground and change the basic dynamics .
So group together boys and see if you can scare the big bad bear .

Communicating in English is not your strongest point, is it? Well, let me be as subtle as I can - in a very few posts, you've managed to become a laughing stock of this forum... congratulations

Why don't you go and make fool of yourself someplace else? Or, better still, go cry on the shoulder of your good friend Alex Bortnikov

They lost billions in Iraq when they effectively got kicked out of Iraq -- biggest investors , ahead of Germany and France who all resisted the US invasion .
Losing Iran would be a many times greater blow .
    Oil
Arms -- both to Iran and also piped to Syria and Hezbollah in Lebanon etc
And work for top scientists who put together the leading nuclear installation at Bushehr .
And they don't want NATO circling them -- understandable , given Putin's mind set .
