There are no simple minded Republican hacks in Canada. We're all socialists.

Yeah I know. I've been busy at work. Even now I'm switching between battling the Righties on this laptop and doing something for work on my work laptop. I hope I don't get them mixed up and send an email to my boss accusing him of being "a simple-minded Republican hack".

I would never go up in space ever. I do not trust NASA I mean look at what happened to Columbia. They didn't learn then and they haven't learned now.

Ya, I would imagine it would be pretty amazing to go up into space. Too bad I am no where near qualified to ever join nasa.

Well I watched Seconds From Disastor this afternoon about the Challenger mission and I thought I'd look it up and see if what I heard on the TV show was the same as what actually happened and it was. It was the first time I had seen footage of that shuttle exploding. Very frightening and scary to think of those poor astronauts inside. :(

I would say that specific economic tenets of socialism (namely autogestion) can be found in the nature of worker owned-enterprises in capitalist economies, which often produce efficiency gains due to their elimination of principal-agent problems as they exist in the conventional capitalist firm. For instance, the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation in the Basque region of Spain functions as an exemplary model of the increased productivity of worker-owned enterprises, as do numerous firms that incorporate employee stock ownership plans.

Specific expropriation efforts were also undertaken in Argentina in the aftermath of the 2001 economic crisis caused by neoliberal expansion, which resulted in the takeover of 170 to 200 workplaces by approximately ten to fifteen thousand workers, and vast economic recovery in those enterprises. (The Hotel Bauen functions as an ideal example.)

As to specific examples of democratic or libertarian forms of socialism, I would look to Bolivarian Venezuela, which, despite widespread defamation efforts occurring by certain pundits in the States, is faring well, as noted by Robin Hahnel in Venezuela: Not What You Think. I place great credence in Hahnel's observation that "after Chavez survived the opposition sponsored recall election, annual economic growth was 18.3% in 2004, 10.3% in 2005, and 10.3% in 2006, and the unemployment rate fell from 18.4 % in June 2003 to 8.3% in June 2007," economic improvements that notably occurred after oil nationalization.

Perhaps the most profound example comes from the Spanish Revolution, in which widespread collectivization occurred, but emphasis on libertarian social organization was similarly widespread. Indeed, the anarchists often earned Leninist vituperation for frequently declaring that they wished to establish "libertarian communism."

I was curious to know if you would address my comments regarding Marxian approaches to political economy (for instance, Jonathan Goldstein wrote an insightful piece on the modern applications of crisis theory), in the thread in which you stated that Marx was wrong. Marx was wrong about the authoritarian nature of centralized planning, yes, as Bakunin illustrated in his Statism and Anarchy, but his critique of capitalism continues to resonate to this day.

I haven't able to see it with my own eyes, just from the photos printed in the newspaper and shown on TV. A lot of areas are off limits because the heat is too much.

Do you know what Lunecat said in my thread Frodders? You haven't told me yet, he said something that I think got him banned.

The essence of any utopianism is: Conjure an ideal that makes an impossible demand on reality, then announce that, until the demand is met in full, your ideal can't be fairly evaluated. Attribute any incidental successes to the halfway meeting of the demand, any failure to the halfway still to go.
