Any time you have multiple assailants assaulting someone, the assaulted person has the right to defend themselves. Would you suggest the victim just lay there and take it? It doesn't matter one whit what scenario you put forth regarding race / religion / age / sex.

It is absolutely OK to shoot. The victim isn't a mind reader. He didn't know the full intentions of the assaulters. They pushed him off his bike and attacked him. That is all any victim would need to know before responding with force.

If you are going to do wrong (rob someone, assault someone, rape someone, bully someone etc.), you should be prepared to accept the consequences of your actions whether it is legal, physical, or lethal. Pretending it is OK because you were really only going to "mess with him a little" isn't an excuse.

Again, if a person is being attacked, they have the right to defend themselves. That defense should be within the letter of the law. Shooting someone over verbal abuse or verbal threats is not defensable in the eyes of the law, and would not be an appropriate response to bullying. Now, if the bully pulled out a weapon or proceeded to any kind of physical attack, the victim has the right to defend themselves. It is the bully who is in the wrong and should accept the consequences of his behavior.

No, and nobody here is promoting that thinking. That is the extreme some use when trying to build up a strawman argument. The laws concerning lawful defense are clearly laid out and should be followed by everyone. I have a CCW as does my wife. I carry occasionally and my wife always has her snubnosed .357. We've had people "mess" with us and neither of us has ever needed to pull a weapon. Now, if anyone is ever stupid enough to cross the line from "mess" to "assault", they will find that some victims just aren't as easy a target as others.

Good for him. Eliminating vermin should be praised. You see old folks do have a real purpose in life.

Teens need time to learn, hell everyone makes mistakes. I would of rather had the old man at least shoot them in the shoulder or a non fatal wound. Give them a chance to learn from their stupidity. 2 of them survived and will hopefully learn from this, the other guy will never get that chance.

Think of it this way, if roe v wade never happened there would be a lot more "vermin" out there. Seriously though calling teens vermin is asinine even if they are idiotic jerks

It's a great way to thin the herd of idiots. Whether the other two learn from this is hard to say, but you can bet they will be hesitant to (*)(*)(*)(*) with old people after this.

And that is the natural consequence of the dead teen's action. The thing is, there is never a justification to wound an attacker. If you're justified to shoot an attacker, you need to try to stop them.

If you are in a situation that requires you to pull a gun, you're not in a situation that requires trying to shoot someone in the shoulder to teach them a lesson. It is a wonder he hit any of them in the first place. Most shootings occur at very close range and STILL end up with most shots missed. Trying to put a priority of wounding your assailant over the priority of protecting your own life doesn't seem very reasonable to me.

I understand your position and it seems like a rational one until you are actually in that kind of situation. All you are thinking about is protecting yourself and that is as it should be. Your number one priority is survival.

As for vermin, people who prey on and assault others are vermin regardless of age. It isn't the age of the assaulters that makes them vermin. It is the fact they would do things like attack a 65 year old man whom they more than likely thought would be an easy mark that makes them vermin.

Good perspective! How about you volunteer to be the teens' official punching bag. They can make their "mistakes" on you.

This mother now has to bury her teen son.... for most of us parents, we don't ever want to outlive our kids.

What do these parents think is going to happen when they allow their kids to join gangs, roam the streets, out at 2-3-4 in the morning? Or just gone a lot and the parents don't bother to check up on them - No discipline, no rules, no structured homelife - I don't think many of them have a clue who their kids friends are... or if they do, they don't care.

Another teenager dead and the gent had every right to protect himself....

    Morals of the story:

    1. An armed society is a polite society.

Your happiness over the kids death disturbs me

If they learn from the experience and turn their lives around then its a fair price to pay. What ever you understand what i mean, rather than letting one mistake ruin their lives at least give them a second chance.(if they continually cause harm to others even then fine.)

I wouldn't call it 'celebrating'..... I would call it facing the cold realization of what can happen to a teenage son when the parents allow him to turn into a street thug, beating up anyone, including older people whom they're dumb enuf to think are defenseless........

And if the parents didn't know their son was a street thug, why didn't they?

Regardless of your age, if you decide to live the life of a criminal - there's some pretty harsh and sometimes fatal consequences to face.........

    But not to kill .
Another pathetic example of people ruled by guns .
His reaction was disproportionate and unfortunately the old geezer must be punished .

Yes, no doubt about that. Some posters here have a lot assumptions about what went on regarding this incident.

At times the parents have no choice, as they are stuck working and are not around or weren't ready for a kid in the first place. If youre poor its almost impossible to be around your kid or help keep your kid away from bad influences.

what these kids did was despicable but its still sad that the one died.

You're forgetting one thing .... teens are just as capable of making a victim just as DEAD as an adult criminal can.........

You really think that's just part of the teen's 'learning process'?

They know exactly what they're doing when they attack someone and start beating them w/o any mercy......

I understand, I was drawing a much more drastic picture than what you intended. Nevertheless, it was to make a point, these teens could have very well killed that man. I would hope the shooter was in fear for his life when he fired his weapon.

The teen's death should not be in vain, but, should be used as a power of example for others not to follow in his footsteps.

First let me say that I respect the opinions of everyone here in this argument, but I want to play devil's advocate again (I actually agree about this situation).

But let's change the scenario again. Lets say that 3 gang members from a known rival gang show up on the street corner of some "victims" gang. They knock him off his bike and start throwing punches. He retaliates by shooting two of them. Is that gang member off the hook? Now, there are no witnesses to the shooting (as there weren't in this situation), but it was in a public place (not the victims personal property) and these two gangs have a history of violence against each other. So, justified self defense, or a serious problem worth re-evaluating?

Absolutely yes. Criminals are criminals...the more that end up dead, the better.

Shoot a couple of bullies & the rest will probably smarten up.
