That's because some leftist Democrats are eternally, if not terminally, stuck on stupid. And the others are just that far left/socialist to not care how much destruction they cause to America and Americans' lives, as long as they're the ones in power....that's all they care about.

So are you saying NOW is the only time we've had a drought?

I notice a great many of you posts are prefaced by "I'm not sure".

Is it frustrating to post on a political MB and be so often unsure about points being made, or is it a coping mechanism to avoid unpleasant truths?

From the OP's link that some people didn't bother to read...

Economics 101... Supply and demand. Demand is the same. Supply has been severely constrained. Prices go up. Demand drops. A new equilibrium with higher prices and lower demand is established.

    Some people are idiots.

Yes it is true that natural disasters can cause price increases but I know for a fact that the money printing that is going on in the US has a large role also.

If you increase the money supply by 10% then prices on average will go up 10% also.

The jackass who wrote the article also doesnt know why exactly beef prices have gone up because he cannot see how peoples subjective valuations are affecting individual item goods.

Idiots don't consider all the factors....like...

Obama Fuel prices to transport feed and water to where the livestock are and again to the meat processing plant and on to the Market. Idiots can't see how this increases prices. Idiots can't see the price of feed driven up by the liberal pipe dream of corn fuel affects to final price of meat at the market place. That's why they are idiots.

Hey Professor, you're the one that posted the brilliant article. If you didn't want us to read it why did you post it? The only link you supplied with your partisan hackfest totally contradicted your obviously baseless point. I don't know how they write research papers where you work Professor but at all the universities I've ever been to our references usually support our assertions. It's a little unconventional but I think it works. Give it a try next time... Professor.

I remember when Cyclone Larry wiped out most of the banana crops/trees. We were paying $15 for a kilo of them.

    It was Kevin Rudds fault!

I highly doubt Obama is responsible for meat prices and petrol and everything else.

they raised the prices on corn feed and the cheap farmers stop feeding their cows so now we'll have less burgers this summer

the environmentalist vegans and vegetarians didn't cause this, they don't own any farms or beef businesses.

    Professor Peabody,

Sorry for being so hard on you. I just don't understand why you are making all these off the wall posts. My family owns a substantial amount of land in Texas and this has been one of the worst droughts in decades... as your article clearly stated. I don't care who is in the White House if you slash the size of herds down to 1952 levels you are going to see a big jump in prices. Are there other trends going on? Maybe.

You just need to stop this Obama bashing. There are plenty of legitimate things to criticize about the Obama administration. The drought in Texas is not one of them. And I have not seen a single research report that says QE1, QE2, Ethanol or anything other than the drought is responsible for the jump in beef prices. Please by all means if you have another article that backs up your point post it. Sure there may be a long term inflationary trend and we all know that ethonal prices have driven up the global cost of corn for years. It's happening in other countries and it happened under Bush.

If you have evidence that contradicts anything I've said I will be happy to look at it and retract any erroneous statements. But if your article is correct and we are correct just leave it at that.

There it is in a nutshell. Maybe your just too young to get it. I don't know. I bash Obama because I can and will continue to do so till he's out of office. I do so because it's my opinion he's an uneducated rube like his followers. If you don't like my posts, I welcome you to put me on your ignore list. I say that to all my detractors because I just like less uneducated rubes to deal with. I grow weary of the self-righteous white, bourgeois liberals who think they know everything. So please put me on your ignore list, you'll be doing both of us a favor.

uhh..beef is in increased demand from China and India, whose citizens now make enough money to buy beef. That's why the prices are increasing. That's how market forces work. The prices will only continue to go up no matter who is president from now on.

When I first came to this site, I thought the rightists would be more logical than leftists. I guess not.

I believe this source more than I do a partisan hack:

    http://www.thefencepost.com/article/20110126/NEWS/110129927

"While the demand for beef has dropped drastically in the U.S. since Dec. 23, 2003, when the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy — mad cow disease — was reported, that demand is growing steadily as the worldwide economy improves, particularly in such countries as China and India, Woerner said.

The U.S., he said, lost beef export markets due to BSE as several countries set up trade barriers.

“From the period of 2004-2010, the U.S. lost $8 billion — $70 million a month — from a drop of beef exports to Japan alone,” Woerner said. At the same time, $4.7 billion was lost in Korea and lesser amounts were realized in other countries.

But as the world's population continues to increase, and countries such as China and India are developing stronger economies, the demand for beef increases, faster, in most cases, than the demand in the U.S. The world population has grown from about 3 billion in 1960 to an anticipated 8 billion by 2030, Woerner added."

    Malthus' Law.
