Not believing in evolution at this point is basically the same as not believing in gravity, dinosaurs or the earth orbiting the sun. It's a pretty straightforward way to let everyone else know your an idiot. Let's get real though, southerners are also the most likely to have issue with anyone who isn't white; brown = muslim/commie/marxist/socialist/liberal derpderpderp
The guy has never set foot in a mosque in his life, doesn't recite Muslim scripture, doesn't keep Halal, doesn't do *anything* to live like a Muslim. In fact, he does the opposite: he talks about his Christian faith, he attends church, he uses Christian metaphors and scripture when talking about religion. But boy, he once said "my Muslim faith" during a conversation that covered Islam and Christianity. Never mind that he quickly corrected it. Never mind that it's easy to see how such a slip could be made when he's talking about Christians and Muslims. Nope, that one misstatement is overwhelming evidence of his true beliefs. Yeah, that makes sense.
I loved Lincoln, but his mistake was that he thought Southerners were advanced enough to be part of a Union. That's not true even 150 years later.
Agreed. Give Southerners credit: They actually have a far more nuanced relationship with race than do most northerners. Sure, there are the flat out Billy Bob racists. But you're also more likely to find complex views on race in the South -- where they've lived with it for centuries -- than in large parts of the North, where race relations were an abstraction most of the time, being as the North was (and still is) far more white. I think Southerners, for instance, are more comfortable talking about race in casual conversation, while Northerners are more likely to pretend it doesn't exist.
How do you know all this? I submit to you that "the guy" had indeed visited many mosques in his life (after all, having two muslim fathers guarantees it) and he does recite muslim scriptures. As for Halals and living like a muslim, he'd do anything for convenience's sake, even leave Islam.
Actually, I've met evangelicals that don't believe in dinosaurs. Really. They do, however, believe the earth orbits the sun and they seem to be OK with gravity. But science in general is a sticking point. Unless they get sick. Then it's OK. And evolution is clearly a hoax. Pretty much. But white Jews, Mormons or Catholics are not really in the club. Just being white is not enough.
Having lived in the deep south my entire life I can with certainty that our relationship with the topic is more "casual". What that ends up meaning in the end is that most aren't ashamed of their racism and flaunt it openly and proudly. So sure, racial tensions may be worse in more northern states less acclimated to diversity (which I'd challenge, since many diverse groups migrated to northern states early in our history, though it was likely different since many of them were European), but there are many in the south who still view blacks in particular as second class citizens.
I'm ashamed to admit that I know these same people. Fossils are just made up by science and the devil to get you not to believe in God. There's a few cooks that reject this science as well... what do you mean you can't pray away diabetes? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,341574,00.html If you can feign interest in Nascar and mediocre American beers, they'll let you hang out. Just don't mess with Jesus.
I've lived in both places. It's not considered as culturally inappropriate to be openly racist in the south. And among some groups it is even a plus. The racism up north is more hidden because the cultural mores state it's a bad thing. Those mores have much more shallow roots in Dixie.
Kind of like your thread title?....lol. Go ahead and put all "Southern Republicans" in the pot next time why don't ya....lol.
We indeed must have met the same people. Sure, you can find morons anywhere you look. But it's the sheer number down here that shocks me. When some dude says he can pray away heart disease you can laugh him off as a random crackpot. But when you meet lots of folks that believe that it's a bit scary.
Yep, some of those beliefs are rather crazy. But they're not as crazy or as dangerous as believing that the best way out of debt is to spend more money. Or believing that the American people will really like the way things are if Obama was allowed to "transform" America as far as he probably wants to. THOSE beliefs really ARE crazy. So in other words, give me the crazy Southern Baptists over the Obama supporters.
Coincidentally, here's a writer pointing out that Obama is the most Jewish president we've ever had: http://www.theatlantic.com/national...a-is-such-a-traditional-jew-sometimes/254292/
So you're saying that these numbers would be better in other "southern" states like Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and Arkansas?
What makes you think you can't pray away disease? An atheist is hardly qualified to make such an assessment, in ANY case.
Thanks for that! It would be even better if you lived in Alabama so people can see we are not making this stuff up.
Of course, no serious liberal thinks that. Nice strawman, though. "Probably wants to"? Speculative fantasy much?
