http://au.news.yahoo.com/vic/latest...man-jailed-for-facebook-sex-ratings-comments/ A central Victorian man who posted offensive personal comments about women on Facebook has been sentenced to four months in jail. David McRory, 22, of Bendigo pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to offend and publishing objectionable material online on Facebook. He and friend created a Facebook page rating the sexual performance of women in central Victoria. His lawyer told the Bendigo Magistrates Court his conduct was reckless rather than intentional. But the prosecution argued that degrading comments could have a long-lasting effect on the victims. The prosecution told the court McRory set up the page with a friend after seeing similar ones online, for other towns. The court heard there was public outcry about the page, prompting police to remove it from Facebook and lay charges. The court also heard McRory had a criminal history involving driving offences and financial deception. The magistrate took note of McRory's guilty plea but said he must send a message to the public about his behaviour. He was sentenced to four months jail but has been bailed pending an appeal in the County Court. In July, Turner was banned from using Facebook for two years and given a wholly suspended six-month prison sentence. But he has since launched an appeal against the sentence. =================================================================================== The question I`m asking here isn`t whether David McRory`s actions were hitting below the belt, but are some sections of the community, who like to criticise others, too precious when the heat`s on them?
Locking someone in jail for 4 months is an extreme response to harmless fun imo.. Societies too weak minded.
Harmless of fun if it was your sister, daughter or any female member of your family. I hope the lads in "B" block rate his sexual performance
Just wonder if the gender roles were reversed, would this have been put down to just being a bit of fun? Has anyone seen the highly sexist and discriminatory Lynx add aimed directly at men - shower gel: “cleans your balls”. Personally, I found the add really lowbrow and offensive. I wonder what would be the response if an add was released directly targeting a woman’s dirty vigina. I wonder would women be forced to see the add as just “some fun” and “good humour”. It seems these days men have to accept sexism and discrimination as just being “some fun” and in “good humour” but women don’t. Actually there is an ad where the "model" refers to "your vagina" I wont mention the name, but Im sure it wont last...something about "pads with wings"...
I would like to see how long a commercial would last with two guys on stage with a sponge and shower gel talking about cleaning dirty vigina's. This Lynx add is sexist and discriminatory towards males, but if the gender roles were reversed, you would have every feminist in the country screaming their bloody lungs out. Men have been so p.u.s.s.y whipped into conformity, if sexism and discrimination is directed towards their gender, they are told its only "some fun" or in "good humour" - so shut-up and accept it.
Instead of being outraged over the Facebook page, the father of the 13 year old should be more outraged over the fact his 13 yr old was acting like a whore. This happened in my city, by the way. I don't care about the page, its a bit of fun.
Insulted!? I didn't see any sexual discrimination. It's called comedy about human anatomy, which just happens to be male genitalia. The reason there is a sensitivity to female anatomy is because men (at large) are already too fixated on sex to begin with, but its 'unusual' to see women talking about balls and thus comedy is created. Why would you want society to be sensitive to talking about male genitalia? It's not like they were making fun of ball's, they were making fun of using sports equipment to get away with a script about cleaning balls. Geeez
Thirteen year old? I didn`t see any referance to a 13yo, if a child was referred to in a sexual context, the perp should be shot. My point here is, people who criticise others should be able to handle some flack themselves.
the problem is, this would cover both sides, should it be illegal to talk down about someone you just broke up with, ect....
You validated my point perfectly - trying to sweep sexism and discrimination towards males under the banner of comedy. Try doing the same about female genitalia, and there would be a public outcry. Men are just told to shut-up and accept sexism and discrimination towards their gender as good humour. Or, males are told they have to think more like women, which is bloody psychologically impossible in the first place. What's the problem with reversing the imperfection and have females think more like males. Why have the feminists turn this into a battle of the sexes, and constantly always looking for ways to be sexist and discriminatory towards males. Surely there can be lessons learnt from the past that suggests that males and females can be equal without resorting to sexism or discrimination of either sex.
As if it's not well known that women get together and rate every last aspect of every sexual encounter they've ever had to each other. It's just wrong when men do it.
I actually agree with most posts here but I also believe that youth today are severely lacking respect This act shows that they look upon woman with little respect.
That god forsaken twit has a worse case of penis envy than that old carper munching hag Gemaine Greer.
Errr no, its about balance. The problem is we are not coming from a place of balance but imbalance, and so their needs to be room for a bit of splash. Sexism exists to a much larger extent against women, so you do not redress that by holding down the repressed party - in fact you have to the opposite and allow them more free room so they can overcompensate intially before finding balance. I get that there is a closet mysognist movement especially among divorced men, but it just shows how unable those men are to empathize with the other side of the discussion and they are just new to being victims and themselves overcompensating in much the same way the womens movement must do so.... no-one is stopping those men overcompensate by whinging about it, so I think they should just step away from the mirrored door, harden the f$%^ up, and judge things by the 'actual' implications. Its a blatant cop out for men to cry equality when women do not have it to the same extent yet. If you don't believe they do then that should tell yourself your only viewing it from one side and not considering the issue properly.
So because women are much more likely to resort to physical violence in a relationship this means it's ok for men, in the name of balance, to hit their girlfriends and wives?
No, and it`s ridiculously sexist to condone / ignore / try to justify domestic violence comitted by women. The most abused word in our language, is the word "equality".
Well as an interested observer, can I ask how he condoned, ignored or tried to justify violence committed by women. I thought it a valid point.
I`ll clear thi missunderstanding up. I wasn`t accusing him of any of those things. I simply meant to agree that it's NOT ok for men, in the name of balance, to hit their girlfriends and wives, and I added that it`s ridiculously sexist to condone / ignore / try to justify domestic violence comitted by women. Bearing in mind that too many women not only condone / ignore / try to justify domestic violence comitted by women, but actually get a laugh out of it. You mentioned respect, respect I believe needs to be a two way street to function. It`s unrealistic for people to demand respect from those they treat with contempt.
Hardly.... what makes you think that has anything to do with what I said? You are basically saying its ok to have violence in a relationship and it needs to be balanced... huh!? I know its difficult for oppressors to empathize with the victims broadly and its the same thing being shown here, in this case men easily do not realize that women need to find their own empowerment to counter the disempowerment they've have at many levels men simply do not consider. Comedy is a great outlet for freedom of expression and this is an important area for a marginalised groups to develop not necessarily a culture but to believe they are able to develop a culture, ie; its called growing, and that is what decent societies try to facilitate in marginalized groups.
