To put it bluntly, this is an issue between China and Japan that the U.S. has absolutely no stake in short of an out-and-out shooting war. It has no strategic implications for America and we should avoid taking sides.

Agree that this is nothing to do with us. But when has that ever mattered? We love war so much we go looking for fights to get involved in.

Historically, the disputed islands belonged to Imperial Japan since 1895 and the islands were returned to Japan after they were briefly controlled by the US from 1945 to 1971. Because Imperial Japan surrendered unconditionally to the Allies, it had no say over which islands to keep and Washington was the ultimate arbiter of the post-war settlement regarding Japan. China's territorial claim over the islands is completely groundless and any Chinese military action would trigger an American response based on the mutual defence treaty between the US and Japan as the State Department spokeswoman said during a press briefing and Japan is about to nationalise the islands in order to put this matter to rest.

This is easy. Threatening a 95% tariff on China would make them pee themselves and back down from just about anything.

They respond with the same, the world economy grinds to a hauls and everyone goes broke. The economic equivalent of threatening nuclear war. Seems to be our only options is kick over the game board and walk away.

America: "Do what we say or we'll ruin EVERYTHING" (Insert 6 year old kid voice to taste)

    Super foreign policy approach.

China is a net exporter. Their import of consumer goods is recent history. The world lived quite well without access to the Chinese market and would do so again without it, especially if you factor in the intellectual property and silly regulation (bribes) that they impose on foreign company doing business there.

historically those island were part of ming/qing dynasty, 15th century to late 19th century, china lost these island after sino-jap war. so now both china and taiwan claim it. as you can see its not groundless. s.korea, and russia have similar dispute with japan. and it has to do with pre-wwii imperial expansion

China tryin' to take Japanese islands...
    :dohtwo:
China sends patrol ships to islands held by Japan
Sep 11,`12 -- A territorial flare-up between China and Japan intensified Tuesday as two Beijing-sent patrol ships arrived near disputed East China Sea islands in a show of anger over Tokyo's purchase of the largely barren outcroppings from their private owners.

In which case China would call on the US to honour its trillions of dollars of IOUs held by the communists, in which case the US would not only pee itself, it would vacuate from all external orifices, bleed from the nose and pour copious tears as it watched the dollar crater to near-worthless overnight.

I vote for a bit of peeing.

Wiki: "The Chinese claim the discovery and control of the islands from the 14th century. Japan controlled the islands from 1895 until its surrender at the end of World War II."

The Chinese must therefore be in the right. Their claim is earlier, not so?

No, you are terribly wrong unless you can turn the clock back to the time of the Ming Dynasty when Admiral Zheng He was around.

Don't get over excited about it. Unless they are shot at by the nervous Japanese, the Chinese sailors are enjoying their cruise round the rocks. Don't disturb the peace as grandpa and granny are having their honeymoon and rocking on board.

My parting shot: The Japanese may award you a medal for supporting them by calling those rocks "Japanese islands". :relax:

That's the "nuclear" option. The Chinese equivalent would be they dump all their U.S. Dollar holdings on the world market at once and try and crash the value of the greenback. Neither country wins playing games like that.

Tiny Pacific Islets Sinking Giant Japanese Businesses in China
09/26/12 --- You'd need a microscope to find these islands on most maps of Asia. No one lives there, unless you count short-tailed albatrosses.
