Drones beat troops on the ground any day. There would be no need for drones or troops if the barbarians simply stuck to murdering their own folk.

 

That cost goes down with time as technology improves.

A soldier, on the other hand, is more expensive in 2 ways.

1) the cost of benefits over the period of his/her life

2) the political cost of losing soldiers in conflicts

Mechanized war removes most of the death from our side of the conflict. Admittedly, this is a scary thought considering how much easier it would be to sell a war under those conditions.

 

Not to mention drones have a much much lower down time. They can fly for days 24 hour/day.
Remote control warfare is in its infancy. In 10 years or so, manned fighter planes and bombers will be obsolete. Mobile armour will be able to roam the countryside, Automated sentries will patrol perimeters and automated scouts will provide intel. Its kind of creepy when you think about it.

If Bush had overseen the campaign of drone attacks Obama has, the left would be calling for him to be charged with war crimes!!
