Hurricane Sandy was much stronger than expected when it landed and there were 40 reported deaths in the city of New York alone and the mayor endorsed Obama emotionally along with Chris Christie because people tend to get behind the president when the nation is in crisis and Obama could win his second term thanks to the sentimental media coverage favourable to the sitting president.

Hate to sound this way but at this point who cares? I don't like it and I think it is wrong but it is him and the media who will have to answer.

I guess it's easy to point fingers when you live in one of the least populated states and where the biggest disaster worries are the occasional blizzard or volcanic eruption (Mount St. Helens).

What about Romney? He wants states to do most of this on their own and mentioned privatizing FEMA might be worth doing, is he on something or an idiot no state could cover this kind of disaster and FEMA has to be there. Period.

States are at fault to why didn't exposed areas have any seawalls or other measures in place especially around NYC and Atlantic City they now lost their bread and butter tourist destinations. People should have been more prepared and left when told to and if they needed help then help doing that.

But I find the gas shortages amusing oil is passed its peak production sooner or later gasoline will be far more expensive and harder to get, what will they do then when they can't handle a short time issue now?

Well Maybe Christie understands that you get more flys with honey than vineger and if Obama gets re-elected he is the heir apparent in four years.
But I do not know what Christie is thinking and I hope it for for the people of his State.

I spent two weeks just without power once because of an ice storm and it was a miserable experience.
My heart goes out to the suffering masses and I find it hard to find fault with people living in miserable conditions.

heck you can't cook you can't go anywhere you can't watch TV and wost of all...you can't even take a bath.

Louisiana is red...New Orleans, mostly black, is solid democrat, and at the time of the disaster, the Governor was also a dem. What I am saying is that the expectation of immediate and overwhelming government support and help on the doorstep was the result of the prevailing big government fairy tale so common in Blue states.

I know the Wilmington, NC area very well and every time there was a hurricane or storm of any magnitude which eroded the beach sand, etc. home owners cried for the state and federal government to repair everything back prior to the damage. The real root problem is governments at all levels allowing property development in these unstable and high-risk areas. I have no problem with people building their homes on the beach, at sea level, etc. as long as they can obtain full property/life insurance, can take care of all the rebuilding, and assume full liability. If someone has enough cash to do this then knock themselves out...this includes not being able to dial 911 when the roof caves in!

Bull! It was 24/7 doom gloom and the end is near for the three days before the storm hit. Three days to fill the cars tank, buy a few cans of soup and horde water. Buy a camp stove and batteries or candles or evacuate the family home if it is at sea level...What happened was the city ignored the threat and now refuse to take any responsibility for the initial stupidity. Did they really think they would have flush toilets on the 10th floor without power? Did they figure the local market would be operating after being under water for a day or so? Did they really think their local or federal government would have the shelter and free food going in front of their building as the sun arose Wednesday morning?

I have at least a months food, 50 gallons of water, kerosine, candles, etc as needed to get through any disaster that does not blow my home to splinters.

I do not mind helping but I do mind the whining and complaining about the speed of the effort when the folk suffering are in large part suffering because of their refusal to take any responsibility or prepare before the disaster.

How could any sentient being be out of food only three days after the disaster?

I'm thinking of trying to smuggle HungryMan dinners into NY. Between Michelle, and Bloomberg, and the hurricane, it sounds like we have a city under siege. Join me America.

You really don't get it. This was not predicted to be anywhere near what we got. It was a category 1 storm that ended up having the effects of a category 3 or 4. This kind of storm just doesn't come here or at least it hasn't until now. Nobody predicted all the flooding and damage we have seen. Nobody thought unless you were on the coast you would lose power for days or have masses of homes destroyed. It's just unparalleled in the modern history of the area.We are used to snow and blizzards but not this. Maybe we will have to adapt to a new reality of weather and storms in our area.

Excuse me. . but what does that have to do with "blue state?"
I believe that even blue states are not made up of 100% Democrats, are they?

Why are you trying another way to politicize this disaster through ridiculous, over the top partisanship?

I do agree that the people of NY and NJ had time to pile up on supplies. . .and I also believe that some of those supplies went up in smoke in the fires, or are now floating some place along the Atlantic coast.

And there will ALWAYS be people who either do not have the money, or the ability to organize ahead of time.

What does that have to do with Blue or Red states?

What I get is what I saw in the news before the event...That you did not see the same coverage is more indicative of your different priorities than any misunderstanding on my part...Go to Drudge and read his headlines from a week ago. It is in no way unprecedented. Power was out for 6 weeks in a good bit of Maine after the Ice Storm in the 90's. Hugo put 25ft of of water over the SC barrier islands and had half a state without electricity for weeks. Natural disasters happen. Idiots ignore them. Smart folk don't. More importantly, sentient folk take basic responsibility for their lives. Leftists give that responsibility to the state, and whine when it cannot do what they expect.

I have been watching TV for 2 days largely peopled with folk whining, not about the storm but about the lack of immediate response in front of their house the day after the event. What sort of dolt actually expects that?

I do draw a parallel with the political location, solid big government high tax blue states, and the volume of whining and lack of individual preparation done.

This isn't Maine or South Carolina is the point , what the heck would anybody from Idaho know about a place like NY.All four of you there I'm sure are rightist and think your always right. Stop thinking you can read something on the web and then tell the natives what it's all about. We would teach you few things I bet about whining too.

I lived in the city 83-88. The natives do many things very well but apparently are less, lets be generous, 'competent' when it comes to individual responsibility.

You sound like someone who has never had to deal with a natural disaster. Lucky you. I hardly ever side with the PC folks but you sound pretty cold-hearted and I don't think this is a political discussion. I can have compassion for these people, probably because I lived 45 miles from the shore for 20 years and I love the area but also because I've lived through a natural disaster much further inland (flooding) and know that as much as you prepare you are never really prepared. You really lost me when you called them "blue state idiots". No wonder conservatives have such a bad name. NJ has a Republican governor for all the good that did them. This is a a man vs. nature discussion and not a blue vs. red discussion.

The point of the post was to note the very real relationship between how one reacts to and prepares for a disaster and ones political affiliation. Red state folk, believers in personal responsibility, actually prepare expecting very little competent from government while Blue folk, believers in the nanny state, do not prepare, take no responsibility, and throw tantrums when the big government comes up short, as it always does...

I don't think you're generalizations apply and I don't think your 'very real relationship' exists. Although almost half of the country believes government should have a bigger role in our lives than I do, I would venture to say that most of those people do take responsibility for themselves especially when it comes to preparing for a natural disaster regardless of where they live.

Yet we find the media replete with examples of folk who made no preparation and are loudly whining and demanding aid they should not need.

Yet the reality remains...why are so very many of these folk completely unprepared? No food after 3 days? No Gas? Where did they drive over the last three days?
