Reading a complete fiction and fantasy would move us closer to the conservative worldview, I agree, but I don't think it would have any predictive effect.

Well, that's a defeatist attitude. I don't give up that easily. My ancestors came here starting in 1622......they've fought in virtually every war we've ever had to protect and defend this nation. And like my ancestors, I don't give up. Our economic problems CAN be fixed; it's just going to take time and a willingness to do it.

Nah its more like a parroting political talking point.

When you are raising taxes morally, its billionaires, however, when you are raising taxes economically, its those over $250k. Its sly and snarky.

We were doing just fine with Clinton's tax rates, which were at 40% still a lot lower than the 70-90% top rates the US had in the '40s-70s.

But now tax revenues are the lowest in 60 years, and we've run up $10 trillion more debt.

How much more debt do you want to run up to have low taxes?

    Depends on the context.

Romney's tax cuts weren't limited to those making less than $250k, quite the contrary, so my comment about tax cuts for billionaires was completely consistent.

    Sorry if you feel snarked.

Telling me what? That they're greedy? That more is never enough? That they don't care about people who are less fortunate?

    I hear them.

We should revamp our tax system. We need to get the special interest out of our tax system, get rid of the loopholes, etc......and make it simpler. I'm all for that. We're all going to have to sacrifice some. I would certainly be willing to give up some of my tax deductions. And more people should be in the system paying taxes too. Pres. Bush placed millions more in the "not paying anything" column and that was wrong. We already had too many there already.....as Obama said, "everyone should have skin in the game." This notion of so many at the bottom not paying anything has grown to ridiculous numbers. My Dad was a carpenter, didn't make much money and had 3 kids and a wife to support. But back then.....as little as he made.....he actually paid something (small amount I'm sure) into the federal gov't and he was proud to do so. We should go back to that.

Nah, I deal with snarks all day.

Only idiots fall for the partisan talk. There's no hope for them anyways.

    Carry on.

    Everyone is for this!!

Do you guys ever ask why we are talking about a 3% tax raise for 1% of Americans, when we all agree on what the problem is, and how to fix it?

I'd like to know how a 3% tax raise that will reduce the deficit by MAYBE 3% is worth pimping?

The rich already pay most of the federal taxes in this country. How much would they need to give liberals for social programs BEFORE you'd say they actually cared???? I dare say there is never "enough." Whenever we send money to the federal gov't, they have a way of spending it. If not on a current program, on yet another one they're creating. It never ends. They LOVE to spend other people's money. And that's fine....to an extent. We get taxed for our services and that's okay. But there IS a limit. And the federal gov't is notorious for abusing it and wasting it.

Good. I'm all for that too. Tax cap gains and dividends the same as income. End home mortgages deduction. Eliminate the estate tax exemption.

My dad was a successful banker and paid top marginal tax rates of well over 50%. In those days the "greatest generation" paid marginal tax rates up to 90% and they paid down the relative size of the debt. From 120% after WWII (higher than it is now) to just 32% before the Reagan deficits started it growing again.

I agree. We should go back to that.

Don't be so hard on yourself. A lot of people are deceived by right wing propaganda. We see it here daily.

Its not, it is pure misdirection, and slight of hand!

What amazes me, is how few people seem to be able to see that both sides are actually on the same team for this to be true!

So they should. They take most of the income of this country.

How much would you have to cut taxes and run up debt BEFORE you'd say they actually cared???? I dare say it is never "enough." Whenver we give more tax cuts to the richest, they stick it away in offshore accounts where it does nothing for the economy. It never ends. They LOVE to take more of the nation's income. And that's fine....to an extent. They make profits on their companies and stocks and that's OK. But there IS a limit. And the richest are notorious for abusing it and wasting it.

Take from the Rich(er) and give to the poor(er). This is basically what he's trying to accomplish. However it is the exact opposite of the type of economics our country has run off since Reagan. That is Supply Line economics, or trickle down economics. This proposal would actually further push us off the Fiscal Cliff. However, the news media has painted this as being no big deal. If he's going to completely change the basis of economics our country runs off of, he should just try and do it all at once. This would give us a temporary boost, and buy us more time. He's probably the only president that could ever get something that radical passed anyways. Just like when the Affordable Care Act was passed.

    @ coolguybrad

See its like this conversation going on between JP5 and Iremon. I can't prove this, but I believe it is a show. I think the purpose of their little disagreement is to keep people like you and me from discussing why we are talking about a 3% tax raise on 1% of the people, when 90%+ of Americans agree on how to deal with taxes!

I don't know, but for such a small effect, our conservative friends sure do squawk loudly about it, don't they? You'd think Obama was talking about a 70% or 91% tax rate like we had for decades when the debt was being relatively reduced.

We are in an earnings recession.

    Its obvious.

Did you look at the latest GDP?

It was up because the MASSIVE increase in government spending.

No one can predict that. Its also HIGHLY misleading.

Look at where you'd be if you had listened to me back in April/May of this year. Get out of stocks, get into gold and oil. Short the EUR and buy the AUD.

OK, eliminate the Defense Department, the FBI, CIA, NOAA, the Transportation, Education, Commerce, Labor, and State Departments. Reduce Congress to 50 people, one member per State. Sell the White House and the Supreme Court building. Sell all military hardware and nuclear bombs. Sell all interstate highways, national parks and national monuments. Reduce the Executive Branch to just the President and Vice President and one secretary for each one. Release all federal prisoners and sell the federal prisons. Eliminate Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Close all veteran hospitals and cemeteries. Eliminate all food and drug inspections. Limit the federal budget for all items to $1 million per year.
