I used to play with toy soldiers with my brother on the snooker table, then have an air wing on a chest of draws. I also did mock battles between a Nimitiz and the Bismarck in the bath, hahaha. Now I just sit by myself in front of a screen.

I often miss the days of "real" wargames. I was really into the "Wargames Research Group"'s set of rules for 25mm Ancients (even having a large Rennisance era Italian Condotteri era army) back in the 1980's. And whenever I moved for the last 10 years, I have tried to find a good "game store". Most only seem interested in the "latest game", and many actually prohibited the playing of anything else.

One I used to go to in Alabama prohibited any playing of GURPS, even though they sold the rules in the store (the owner only played AD&D 3.5), and prohibited playing any card game other then Magic (even though they sold other systems, like Star Wars). A few months ago I went to the only local shop, and asked the owner if I could start groups for Warhammer Fantasy and D&D 1st and 2nd edition, and was flat out told no, that nobody there would be interested.

Amazing that he could talk for the 40 or so people I saw there on a Thursday night. I generally learned that that answer really meant "I am not interested".

I love the Hearts of Iron Series but they move so SLOOOOOOOOW. I don't have 4 hours to wait for one game week.

    I agree
The biggest problem with all this Grand Strategy games is God (*)(*)(*)(*) timing. It takes too long time to play. This why I'm looking for this game, it is massive multipplayer which means lot of action during the limited time - http://www.facebook.com/riseofthetycoon

The owner might just be a jerk who wants other people to play what he likes. But game stores are sort of in a tricky spot because for the most part whatever they sell can be gotten cheaper online.

Magic might be the only reason some of the stores are even open anymore. And while D&D just keeps churning out editions and piles of books no powergamer can resist after flipping through a few pages, GURPs, well, doesn't so much. And some games like Warhammer Ancients can only really be bought online.

Part of the issue is that most stores have a business model where the stuff costs money, but the tables are free. From discussions in my area, I'm given to understand that where just asking for a game night in something is generally unsuccessful, getting a bunch of people together who are willing to pay for some table time changes their tune dramatically.

As an added bonus if you're paying you can often get them to stay open later, which is really useful to those of us with jobs, families, and a desire to play games that are fun but take freaking forever.

Eh, I have a god-machine for a computer. The only time I ran into lag was with Modern Day Scenario.
