Yeah... I am a hacker. I instill in my children the desire to make things work the way THEY want, regardless of their setup. It is not a failure in my esteem. It is a tool of self reliance. It is one of the most highly marketable skills in existence. It teaches them not to be slaves.

You are entitled to your opinion... but my daughter is going to be dangerous by the time she is 12. She has never used anything but linux and she is 5. We don't complain about things. We fix them.

I'm not really sure who you're talking too but then again considering your insults neither do you.

How come there wasn't a link in your post showing where you got your info from?

Why did you reply when you didn't address what I said?

Why are you asking if people like having sore butts?

Clearing out society deteriorating elements is tantamount to censorship?

Or could it be a promotion of wholesome existence?

The virile descendents of Norseman will survive, prosper, and resist the insidious contamination of subversives.

Wait so you don't think porn should be banned? With all the talk about self reliance it just seems a bit contradictory.

The skills I teach them will be useful in their adulthood.
They are still children. They still need protection.

I can only protect them on MY devices in MY home. That is my point. The public library... school... etc... I cannot be there for that. I have made my position pretty clear.

Explain your position to me. What do you have against verification?

Should children be able to buy vodka?

    How about heroin?

I am all for protecting children from perversion, but what many do not realise is that this could just be an excuse for governments to consolidate power over the internet. Once direct administrative power has been handed over to the government to block certain sites, it does is not much difficulty at all for other things to be blocked too. Anything deemed not socially acceptable, or anything that could pose a "security" or "public safety risk". It does not take much stretch of imagination to see what other types of controversial things government censors could go after...

At least in my country, the government run TV system and local police have consistently demonstrated that they cannot be entrusted with the fair and impartial administration of what should be banned. There is surprisingly a lot more power held by those administering the law than by those actually making the law.

If the effective censorship we have seen on Youtube is any example, I do not want the government to have direct power to block a site at a moment's notice, nor do I trust any unelected bureaucrats to be given the power to make a long list deciding which sites are blocked.

    Brilliant point.

Mine is simply this. It is illegal for children to walk into an adult store and be sold pornography.
They should not be able to access it for free from any of 100 things they are in proximity to every day, that is going to continue to expand.

    Could do.

Depends how good you Gov are.

I trust the Gov of Iceland.

Not that of the US or UK.

It is a smaller country with a low population. The people have more direct control over their Democracy.
Once you start having a bigger population, and the people spread out over a greater area, there starts to become more of a distance between the people and government.

    True.

Doesn't mean you cannot still clean it up.

Think of each city or state as being one Iceland, and go from there.

I do not think the government of sweden could be trusted to do this though.
There was a serious proposal made in the past to ban all pornography which showed women being presented in denigrating or "submissive" sexual displays. So typically swedish.

The TV is basically government run, and swedish schools are especially zealous in trying to shape social attitudes. The bureaucrats mold the opinions of the public to match their own. No surprise then that the majority of the public votes for the same political parties who are appointing these bureaucrats. If we remember back to nazi germany, there was a reason the ministry of propaganda was held in such high regard.

How did Icelanders go about sacking their Gov?

Copy that, modify it a little to suit Sweden.

    Why not?

Ironically, I think it was the absence of media influence. In every other country there seemed to be a constant push by media to make the public think that "stimulus" and bailouts were absolutely necessary to prevent economic collapse.

On one hand, I applaud Iceland for recognizing that pornography, as an industry, has access to children through Internet friendly technology. On the other hand, I feel as though considering a national ban on pornography is quite extreme.

Many of the replies in this thread have highlighted the need for parental action, and I agree that parents need to educate themselves and be prepared. However, in the information age parents are often at a disadvantage. I believe this for several reasons. One reason is that children, and especially teenagers, have more free time to learn and experiment with devices- the result being that children are usually more technology savvy than their parents. Another reason is that mobile technology makes it possible for children to explore web content almost anywhere. Finally, parents are at the mercy of other adults, and the children of those adults. If your son or daughter can just go to Johnny's house and access content that he or she cannot access at home, he or she will. The worst part about this is that "other adults" include the people who are so interested in making a profit that they do not care how they draw attention and consumer interest.

In a larger context I think greed is actually the biggest culprit here. Take the music industry in the United States as an example. How many artists really want to rap or sing obscenities and dress/act in a sexually provocative manner because that is how that want to express themselves? I would wager that most do it to garner attention- they want to express themselves that way because they want to make money, and because they want people to talk about them. And how many record companies encourage or pressure artists to be obscene? Sex, and almost anything controversial in a society, sells. For those who only care about turning a nice profit this has nothing to do with freedom of expression as a matter of principle. It is these people who throw common sense out the window and screw up freedom of expression for everyone.

There should be several PC, tablet, and smartphone developers offering minor-friendly machines. There should be a market for this. Machines with operating parameters that reflect parental controls, and do not function otherwise. As a programmer, it always drives me crazy to hear, or read, people who talk as if it simply is not possible to manage content. The fact of the matter is that it is possible. In this way, it is not censorship- it is management. There is more than one way to accomplish this, in fact. One way would be to require a content rating in a website's security certificate. All web browsers check for security certificate authentication and accuracy already, and because of copyright concerns, websites are constantly tasked with updating authentication practices like this. Amazing how, in the interests of making sure corporations can keep making money, we can allow improvements in security and authentication, but not to protect minors on the Internet?

I don't know what the answer to this problem really is, but I do know that individual interests in the technology industry could be doing more. I also know that outright censorship simply does not work. China is probably the best example of this. The government of Iceland can block as many IP addresses as they want, but that is actually a stupid approach. Hell, anyone who has ever managed a web forum could explain how idiotic that strategy is.

At least Iceland is exploring the issue. I'm getting pretty sick of the issues being talked about by our elected officials in the United States. Immigration policy- something that has been outdated since the 1920's. Government spending- something that has been out of control since abandoning the gold standard. Gun control- something that everyone knows should have been regulated since the 1960's, yet is always approached from the two extreme ends of the argument. The Internet has literally changed the way people all over the globe interact with one another. I think it deserves attention. And I don't mean outright censorship- I mean management.

Dude. Calm the (*)(*)(*)(*) down. You know how Iceland was founded right? Aside from a small group of Irish monks, the first settlers were Norse (AKA vikings). These men constantly raided the British isles, and used slavery for over 2 centuries. Straight paganism was the official religion until around 1000 A.D.
Eric the Red, one of the most stereotypical vikings of all time was from there, and only founded Greenland after he was banished for killing several of his neighbors in a feud his family had started (Erik's father BTW had actually only come to Iceland because he himself had been banished from Norway for several murders too).

I agree with a lot of what you have said here. Everyone does not know that gun control should have been regulated since the 60's. Far from it.
Censorship is not a problem, especially from the United States. Child porn, for instance, is not easily sourced... and violation of these rules result in all sorts of punishments... besides... all I am talking about, at least, is age verification. I can think of no possible motive for providers of this material not to comply... as vile an industry as it is... violating laws and providing pornography to children whom cannot then pay for anything seems a bit outside the realm of likelihood. Instead there are a lot of marketing possibilities.

Anyone who makes available pornography to minors is committing a crime.
I don't know why people think the internet is special in this regard.
Again... you do not find adult video stores who "just don't" make ANY attempt to verify the age of a five year old at the counter.

    Welcome to the forum btw.

Yeah good luck with that one.

The internet, you'll never be able to significantly block the porn from it.

I was responding to pocket aces and besides, you are not arguing that the Iceland people have a right to ban porn, you are arguing that what they did is a good thing. So it doesn't matter where you or me actually live.

I am arguing that they have evidence that pornography is a negative influence in their society, particularly on their youth.

You are not making any significant points otherwise. It IS a good thing. Your bizarre premise that Iceland= the World is just silly.
