This thread is interesting. However, drawing meaningful conclusions about the voting habits of most criminals seems very complicated. Is there one or more category of criminal who's voting tendencies are documented? Voting tendencies of white males, black males, Hispanic males, Asian males, white females, black females, Hispanic females, Catholics, Protestants, gays/lesbians, atheists, etc, are usually tracked in polls. If we look at the inmate population in these terms, perhaps some meaningful conclusion could be drawn? I'm grasping at straws on this.

The correlation between politics and the inmates of prisons seems dubious at best. This poll is a bit like asking if the sky looks yellow or purple. Now if there were active political groups in most prisons and they had an impact on outside politics, then the poll might have a point.

In my own opinion, most criminals are self-centered and not very political, regardless of what surface political biases they might have. The ones who do tend to get political are the ones who seek to affirm their membership in race-based prison gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood or their Hispanic and Black equivalents (trying to fit in and stay alive).

I guess one of my questions would be, does this mean they would vote left wing because they will struggle to make it with a right wing in office due to less handouts? (Just a question)

Blacks and Hispanics comprise 62% of the prison population. https://www.aca.org/government/population.asp

That's a big check mark in the column of the left, in answer to your question. I can imagine that these guys don't vote regularly, but if they DID vote,.......

Disagree. If you lined up every U.S. convict in a line and took a poll by reading them the tenets of the left and of the right, you'd probably find that convicts by FAR prefer the viewpoints of the left.

Same with those people who do illegal drugs, are inveterate liars, depressives and people with anger and hate issues.

I'll be doggoned if you haven't inadvertantly replaced "liberal" with "conservative" throughout your post there. Those are the exact things I'd say about liberals. Where in the WORLD do you get your news information?

I wasn't thinking along that line. My intent was to find some commonality between voting and criminal polulations. Since criminals while imprisoned aren't supposed to vote, there are no data that specifically relate voting tendencies to the inmate polulation. However, some statistics that are available for both criminal population AND voting tendencies are demographical; i.e., ethnicity, religion, gender, age, etc. If any of those demographics vote in significantly large numbers for one or the other party, one might be able to draw meaningful conclusions. One additional consideration that really isn't measureable, but is nevertheless important, is the logical conclusion that prisoners would vote for whichever party they see as being easier on crime??

It's an interesting question that should be studied. There's no reason why you couldn't do a proper scientific survey at several representative prisons in diverse geographic locations and get a fairly reliable answer. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to do such a study?

Unfortunately not. A fairly neutral yet prestigious college or university might be the answer.
