I doubt America will be able to afford them.

That is a good start. Try getting out of everywhere and concentrate on taking care of the American public.

invasion is not a good thing, certainly not a good thing to invade china. both side will lose alot lives, could potentially trigger nuke war, and economy will crash down. we invade iraq and afahan, how did that go for us?

No one who supports this nonsense idea, has explained the logistics.

How in the hell does the Usa move its military to the chinese borders (this will take a while) without the chinese goverment noticing then threatening nuclear response if the aggression is not stopped.

its not gonna happen, for starter, US need send several hundred thousands troops to china, and have both naval, air superioty to establish a foothold. US also need to protect SK from NK and watch for chinese troop invade Sk from north. basically a logistic nightmere

Today is July 3rd, 2013. China's capabilities (the ones we know of) certainly has changed and upgraded. Unlike the USA, the Chinese people and gov't have developed their economy further, and have saved their money. Soon Aircraft and Automobiles Made and Designed in China will be competing on the world stage.

Not long ago, a Chinese stealth Fighter jet was tested during the visit of an American military bureaucrat. China has done all this without invading a single nation within the last 40 years.

The US could easily defeat China although actual physical occupation would be not only expensive but frankly stupid and completely unnecessary as well. They have over 1 billions souls to feed and clothe and if you take out their roads, bridges and train tracks you could have all those people clamoring for quickly dwindling resources. Having a large population is a double edged sword and the negatives are just as bad as the positives are good.

All of their heavy industry and i mean literally all of it is located very close to the shoreline where it is easy to strike at with cruise missiles.

Their "stealth" fighter is a joke. It is currently using an old ass Russian propulsion system from the 70s. It has lower quality materials and this is the prototype mind you. They even did a redesign of the formerly "super scary" J-20 and that was only two years ago. They are trying to put on a magic show and its fooling the part time armchair generals but not the experts. This doesn't mean that China isn't capable of eventually putting out a production version of a 5th generation fighter, but that is years if not decades off at this rate. The Russians are more likely to have the most competitive fighter with the new T-50 going into production in a couple of years.

Don't get me wrong I am NOT impressed with the F-22 or the F35 especially but they are still better than what the Chinese or anyone else has currently with as I mentioned the exception of the Russians. The Japanese are also supposedly working on some new next gen fighter as well. I believe it is some sort of Gundam robot jet that can transform into a mech of some kind if I am not mistaken.

Actually, China has built an economy that is incredibly fragile, and remarkably easy to collapse if somebody wanted to.

Remember what happened to Japan when just 2 of their raw materials were cut off. China is entirely dependent on importing raw materials and exporting manufactured goods. Their own internal economy is largely driven on luxury imports, paid for by their cash from exporting cheap products.

If people need umbrellas or cheap tables or MP3 players, they go to China. When they want cars or aircraft or ships or major appliances, they go to anybody but China. That is their weakness, because if their trade ever stopped, they would return to the economy they had 35 years ago almost overnight.

And for the J-20, most of us have been hugely underwhelmed as to the capabilities, design, and highly questionable "stealth" capabilities expected. A Chinese crude copy of the F-22, with Russian engines. Not much there really.

And yea, not invading a single nation in 40 years, unless you count Vietnam. Andin the years before that there was India, Burma, Tibet, and South Korea. But we were only talking about the last 40 years so they were all rainbows and unicorns before that.

Amerika's political culture won't allow the effective use of American military power against China. As a result China's military will be able to defeat the Amerikan military in the Western Pacific. The best course of action is for the USA to stand down so it doesn't get hurt.

The US is being very very smart, they have allies Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Singapore which together could stand up to China and defeat it with American support. You also have other countries which don't like China. Like Viet Nam, India and Taiwan. Othe countries that feel threatened by China like Australia. So I worry very little about a US war with China, more about a regional conflict between US allies and China, which China would lose.

If we ever wanted to invade China, first we would need to start manufacturing again here in the states. You can not wage war with a country that supplies your military. We need to separate ourselves from China first then focus on building up our numbers. Invading a country with a billion people is no easy feat, and we are no where even close to being properly equipped to do so. And depending on what side Russia chooses to side with, we might have assured our own destruction by having a conflict with China. So realistically, China has us in their hand.

Actually, China does not supply all that much to our military. And the manufacturing base does exist. Philippines, Honduras, Indonesia, and all of the other countries we imported from before CHina became a dominant partner.

Most people fail to realize that our trade levels with China did not really exist 25 years ago. This high level of trade with them really is a very modern creation, and one that has negatively impacted many of our other trading partners, like Mexico and Japan. If we were to slap an embargo on Chinese goods, expect the replacement goods to be back on the shelves within months, as long as it takes those other nations to ramp up their production once again.

The only items the military uses from China are all non-critical, and easily replaced with domestic or other foreign sources. We simply get some from China because of cost, not because they are the only source. Jet Engines come from the US or UK. Buttons and toilet paper, who cares what the source of that is?

Obama has taught America's east Asian allies that Uncle Sam is not dependable.

America will stand down from East Asia and the Western Pacific. It doesn't have the money to attempt continuation of Pax Americana.

If we can't even produce these items now because we care so much about cost during piece time, what are we going to do when a war breaks out and we need to start manufacturing these things that you believe are so small. If a country needs aid of someone else to supply their army, how efficient is that country?

Tell me what kind of items that are made in China are not made here in the US? This is something that most people can never do. And in fact, our "highest level" things like computer chips are not even made in China. Yea, they make things like memory chips and other minor components, but the CPUs, those are not made in China. And we do make memory and other chips in the US. Have you not heard of a few little companies like Micron, Texas Instruments, AMD and Intel? I just listed 4 of the biggest semiconductor makers in the world, all 4 based in the United States, all with major manufacturing facilities in the US (and nothing but minor ones making low level chips in China).

It is obvious that you have no concept on how supply and demand works, and what is made in the US and what is made overseas.

Well which do you think is harder to build and produce buttons and toilet paper or jet engine's? The point is China is much more dependent of foreign powers for it's military capabilities, where as the US buys thing from other countries if they can save money. Mushroom also made the point the many other countries make low skillied things like buttons and toilet paper, the US could have those countries export to the US rather than China. Where as only a few countries build jet engines.

This article shows that we are actually outsourcing some high quality materials to China. Things ranging from steel plating, to the fuel for missiles, to night vision goggle components. If you ask me these are very crucial items that our military uses. If China wanted to they can easily cripple the ability of our army.

Not equipment, components. ANd once again, big whoop-de-do. We imported things from the Soviet Union during the Cold War, so what?

And I scanned that report, and I admit it made me laugh. Do you even know what lanthanum is?

Well, it's a "Rare Earth Element". And China is the largest producer simply because they have absolutely no ecological controls on that industry. "Rare Earths" are not even all that rare, you just have to process a lot of dirt to extract them, generally tearing up hundreds of square miles in the process and leaving behind a toxic and polluted wasteland. Until about a decade ago, the US was the largest producer of "Rare Earth Elements" on the planet, but that is because of our strict environmental regulations.

China has catapulted itself to the #1 position, because essentially they do not care if they destroy their environment in their extraction. So yea, we import from them, and they are welcome to it. Let them destroy their country to extract rare dirts from dirt, we can conserve ours and out environment while we laugh as they destroy theirs.

And if they stopped selling to us, so what? We still are the #2 producer int he world, and can fulfill all of our military needs. You keep throwing around hysterical claims and do not actually address the core issue.

Oh, and where does the steel for that steel plating come from? Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding... that's right. The US is the largest supplier of steel to China, mostly in the form of old Navy ships. They buy our ships (essentially floating steel mines), they break them up (and also have to dispose of the fun stuff like the asbestos, oils and other contaminants), and we buy that steel back as manufactured goods. Once again, big deal? Do you think we can't make armor plate?

Well that backs up what I just said. The US wants to buy things cheaper and does so from China, but it can easily get it from inside the US or US allies. Frankly stupid scare stories like this are the reason why I have stopping believing anything a TV news show or news paper says. Yeah I watch loads of TV news, BBC, Sky, Al Jazzeera, Russia Today, Press TV and The Young Turks, what they give you is different views from different political points of views, but very little detail of the strategic points like say Stratfor, RUSI or other people I talk with do. Basically the news doesn't have a clue what it is taking about and brings on experts and askes them the wrong questions. I would rather go to the experts and listen to what they say, they will normally answer my questions.

However I personally have very strange strategic points of views, mainly about the UK. I also wouldn't be at all surprised if the US was able to get 300,000 troops into China and support them they could defeat the Chinese armies. I also see many similarities between China today and an early British Empire.

I'm not saying that we won't be able to make these things if a war began with China, but do you know the amount of time and money we would need to get the factories ready for these items. I'm sure we have some factories here that already produce armor plating, but you can expect them to pick up the slack from the Chinese. Have you also considered the fact that they need a station to centralize all the manufacturing, get a hold of the proper machines and resources, get the assembly line properly calibrated, and have people there to run it? We as a nation are completely capable of supporting our military, but we wouldn't have time to pick up slack from China.

And what position would China be in, with their major supplier of raw materials cut off?

Back to the OP- the U.S could not feasably invade China. It could be done- but realistically it is impossible without a ramp up that frankly Americans would never support.

But as Mushroom says- China is far, far more vulnerable in any conflict than the U.S. is. Virtually its entire economy is dependent on shipping coming out of its east coast. The United States could shut down the entire Pacific to shipping and still be shipping to all but 2 of its largest trading partners.

This is why I really don't believe that either China or the U.S. are likely to instigate any conflict. China has pursued a path of global economic competition with the U.S.- a military conflict would cripple that strategy. The U.S. has no reason to instigate a conflict with China.

20 or 30 years from now who knows what the situation will be- but for the near future- just don't see any of this happening.

unless china did something really anger US. both won't start a war. china is the 2nd economy power in the world. blockade china will meant downfall for global economy, including us. investor will panic, stock going down, and we wont even have enough time to pick up the slack for china manufacture goods. its a lose-lose situation for both country.
china is not only the 1st exporter to US, but 3rd importer of us goods

USA is China's major raw materials supplier??

    See here:
    http://www.worldsrichestcountries.com/top_china_imports.html

It would appear Brazil and Russia are some of the major suppliers of raw materials to China....

Japan exports more raw materials such as plastics, iron/ Steel and copper to China than the USA.
