That was a long time ago, and pretty much all religions, governments, and people were "Fighting" "killing" "slaying" and "smiting the necks" of just about anyone to demonstrate power, meaning, and everything else.

Actually, most of it is offensive. Again, we have the precedent of Muhammad's actions to demonstrate this. Thats why within 80 years of Muhammads death we had Muslims waging OFFENSIVE jihad against Spain in the West and Afghanistan in the East. Immediately after Muhammads death the Islamic Caliphate waged the wars of apostasy not in defense, but instead to compell the tribes to continue paying the tax to Mecca.

Only Islam commands the believers to fight, kill, slay and smite the necks of the unbelievers "UNTIL religion should only be for allah".
