Because of course you Republicans believe that all votes cast by Democrats are fraudulant.

You want to suppress Democratic votes- whether or not they are fraudulant is just an rationalization.

Are you saying voter fraud doesn't happen Jeff? Why does San Francisco have ballots in so many different languages? So all the foreigners can vote.

Well, mostly conservative Democrats. Many weren't.

Ask yourself why they switched to the PUBS. Those folks were died in the wool homespun, God and country, gun loving conservatives, that brooked no BS from the US government on integration, affirmative action, and liberalism.

I never thought they would become PUBS for the most part, mainly too many still remembered Reconstruction, but as those died off, there was nothing to remind them of the chicanery of the PUBS. I voted for Goldwater in '64 because of Kennedy and LBJ.

Now you're just making it up. I never said that. But we shouldn't be encouraging stupid people to vote.

Really? So Palombo thinks voterID is going to change anything in Texas? Stopping those 54 fraudulent votes the left points out as 'not a good excuse for Voter ID' is going to change anybody's election in Texas? A Democrat hasn't been elected to state wide office in Texas since sometime in the last century. And it ain't gonna happen for Wendy Davis in this century. Believe me, Davis may be a media celebrity, but she is not Ann Richards, or Molly Ivins.

That excuse wouldn't even work in Ohio '12. Just ask Mitt Romney

    ---edit---

Oh yeah, and now with registering to vote with... oh wait, it's not working. Well, next time you go to the Doc tell him you want to register to vote. See how easy it gets?

Well fellow grasshopper, the 15th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 established voting rights and clearly state that people can not be prevented from voting or discriminated against when voting.

It wouldn't hurt to look those two up.

Oh the horror. How dare someone have to prove they are eligible to vote. How dare the voters have to be Americans and not illegal aliens? I shudder at this tragic news. If Pedro is selling oranges on the off ramp to the highway he should certainly have a say as to which party controls the tax money that repairs those off ramps.

Neither of those give illegal aliens or criminals the right to vote. If you commit a felony, kiss your voting rights good bye. And if you got here illegally, you should be deported and not shoved into a voting booth. All a valid photo ID proves is that you have a right to pull the lever.

I don't think it's barring a group from voting. That's a stretch. People are already required to register to vote. So would you say that's unconstitutional? Because this "bars" the people who haven't registered from voting?

There's nothing wrong with requiring photo-id to vote, provided that a lengthy period, involving years and not months, is provided, after the law is passed but before implemented, to allow everybody ample opportunity to acquire the ID, and that a sufficient photo-ID of some sort is provided for free to the voter upon application. There can be no fee, lest it becomes a poll-tax.

Voters need to research ahead of time and understand the process and what they need to do to vote, and should need to do this anyway.

What illegal aliens are being shoved into voting booths? A voting ID will not fix a problem that doesn't exist. The statistics show about a handful of cases nationally where people committed voter fraud by imitation. Forcing people to get voter IDs will disenfranchise people who have the right to vote. It's not worth the effort or money tax payers will have to pay for those voter IDs.

This is just a story for low information liberals. If a woman's id is out of date, how would the voter rolls be up-to-date? ID's are compared against the voter rolls. What updates the voter rolls?

Furthermore, the Texas voting procedures allow for this:

"If the name does not match exactly but is “substantially similar” to the name on the OLRV, the voter will be permitted to vote as long as the voter signs an affidavit stating that the voter is the same person on the list of registered voters."

"7. What does “substantially similar” mean:"....

"The voter’s name contains an initial, middle name, or former name that is either not on the official list of registered voters or on the voter’s ID."

And even then: "Voters who refuse to show proof of identity will be allowed to vote by provisional ballot."

    http://votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id/

This is just more irrational raving from liberals who don't care about the law, and are not interested in how these laws protect real citizens.

    Well Grasshopper, the Fifteenth Amendment states;

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.[1]

You, of course are right, in there is a right to vote.

That right can not be denied because of color, race, or previous servitude. I might suggest I can not deny a Black man the right to vote. Nor can I deny a Chinese man the right to vote, nor can I deny a former slave the right to vote. I see no other restrictions. Do you? Color, race, servitude.

I really see nothing about denying that right to vote because the feller can not be identified as a legal citizen. Can you?

There are some elderly voters who were born at home and have no birth certificates or their records are next to impossible to find because birth records used to be kept at hospitals that no longer exist. These people need to be exempt from the process as long as they have a social security number to prove that at some point the government saw them as citizens. Also, women who change their names and have changed them at the social security office shouldn't have to supply records like marriage or divorce documents. I got my ID card here in Mississippi, but it was hard to get because they wanted divorce documents and marriage licenses for every time I had a name change. My name was changed on my military ID and social security card, but that wasn't good enough for the state of Mississippi until I raised all kind of hell with my congressmen. It took me three months to get my ID, yet the Federal government has a trail of proof on all of my name changes. That is a bit excessive, and it could easily cause discourage voting. We should encourage voting because it is our patriotic duty. If a group can prevent or discourage voting in this country then we are all in trouble in the long run.

That argument is taken up in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As long as state provide the IDs free of cost so there is no poll tax and people can get the documents they need to prove their citizenship free of charge (again a possible poll tax), then there is no problem with voter IDs. However, the states that want to enact these laws have made some pretty ridiculous demands on people when they went to get their state issued IDs. These kind of snares cause a discouragement of voting. One such snare is women who change their name through marriage or divorce. These states where requiring marriage licenses or divorce papers to prove the name changes, even when the name changes had been made through the Social Security administration. When difficult tasks are put on people in order to gain the right to vote it is similar to tests they gave before letting black people vote in the south.

Basically, this will be a huge expensive undertaking that will cost tax payers millions in each state and it will not fix voter fraud.

I have mix feelings about voter ID laws. On the one hand, I do see the point of verifying ID when someone votes. However, if you look at most voter fraud cases, it is not with the actual voting, but with voter registration forms. With 50% or so voting for Presidential elections, less then 40% on mid temr elections, about 30% on statewide elections only, and less than 15% on local elections, the very few cases in which someone was caught voting more than once, these laws are a stretch and does not solve the problem. Furthermore , it is a cop out because the real problem is with the voter registration system. This system needs to be strengthened, and the databases need t interact with several other databases from SSA, NCIC, and DMV to make sure that the right people register to vote and to keep the databases updated. That would be far more sufficient and better at having the fight message when someone votes.

Nice, thoughtful post, and I agree with it completely. The standards and requirements should be as simple and straightforward as possible to confirm voting rights, and the process should be streamlined, with all help and resources available to the applicant. Even the smallest unnecessary hurdle crosses the line.

I don't see why the process for confirming identity should be any more extensive than the process required for voting itself.

If the government can keep track of everybody's twitter messages, they should be able to keep track of people's official life records, including previous addresses and names. Like you said, one would have already reported these things.

Voters in Texas have known about VoterID for a couple of years now so they've had ample opportunity to find the necessary ID for voting. That is unless of course they choose the victimization route and haven't bothered to care.

    From the Texas DPS...

Need to have a valid Voter Regis to complete, or register at the same time.

I've already voted in local school district election where ID was required as advised by info adverts.

Texas has always been the most racist and anti-freedom State in the Union. This latest move is just normal behavior for them.

Anyone who has ever been pro ID to buy a gun but argues that voter ID is wrong is a partisan hack or a moron. Probably both.

By all means, please produce one of these LEGAL female voters, who has no legal ID, and is incapable of obtaining one.

Why is it only Democrats who declare themselves too stupid/incompetent to do the simplest things...like vote on a butterfly ballot, or obtain a photo ID, again and again ?

Oh please. I was born at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and that place has been gone for close to 50 years. When I needed a new birth certificate for the USAF, the NY State Records had it in Albany and it was in my hand for a buck or two in a matter of days. If these people were born at home and there is no record of their existence, how do you think they got drivers licenses, a social security card, etc? Any American can get a State ID, and then use the thing to prove who they are when they want to vote. Otherwise, what stops someone from going in and voting 100 times just by saying the name of a bunch of folks on their street?

Where have you ever purchased a gun with no ID? I smell one big steaming pile of bullsh*t. And before you try and shuck and jive me; I have a Federal Firearms License and I know for a FACT you need to prove who you are and have a background check from any legal gun dealer. Man, the level of bull on this site sometimes......
