This is what divides the left wing and the right wing, its the concept of "free will"

Assuming that society cares, how is this to be achieved? I don't think it's a case of simply telling people. Sometimes there has to be a way of showing people what can be done and how to do it and providing opportunities. I do believe that society, in the form of government, has to intervene in the interface between the economy and individuals. It's one reason I'm not a supporter of laissez-faire economics.

Advertisers, propagandists, and con men (including the clergy) rely on the fact that free will can be manipulated. Even the idea, the false premise, that conservatives are big on free will while liberals aren't, is more than likely not something that originated out of free will. The idea, i'm sure, arose out of conservatives' efforts to promote themselves as somehow having better ideas when all their ideas are little more than this type of nonsense. Free will, or was the idea put into the OP's head?

People aren't stupid. The vote, which is cast by free will, speaks volumes. People keep voting for the government to give them more. The vote is a choice. For some, who are having a hard time of it, cast their vote for one group of people to pay more taxes so that they, themselves, can live a better life. There are so many programs out there designed to teach people how to be more productive, by providing affordable education, help them find a job, etc. Has this really changed anything? Some people don't want anything to do with it. This is their choice.

No program in the world will change a person's character. Some want to be on the lower rungs of life. They prefer it. I don't know why. But I respect it. It is a choice. Some find it easier to live off the efforts of others and feel no remorse or appreciation. This reveals their character. Their free will is expressed in a series of choices that advance themselves and offer nothing in return. I don't respect that because no respect is given in the taking of what someone else earned. Such a person always takes the easy way out.

One must use their will to examine themselves and change the way they do things in order to grow toward what they want in life. That is, if they want more from themselves, a job, or want to have more things. The lessons are right out in the open. Do for yourself. Do not be a ungrateful burden to others. Help those around you to make a better life through accomplishment, determination and hard work. It is all right there in front of us. For some that doesn't matter in the least. They will take anything given and build a life on it. You can't change character with another government program. But, maybe if those government programs were taken away, perhaps that would change the character of a person suffering from being a chronic burden.

At present in my country we are under a federal government that thinks it has no real role in our economy. I'm not sure if they're ideological diehards who will stand and fall by the banner of laissez-faire economics or if they're simply incapable of doing anything constructive, but there's not much going on here that is going to help people help themselves.

    Three articles - http://www.adelaidereview.com.au/commentary/article/rising-unemployment

    and http://www.adelaidereview.com.au/commentary/article/prepare-for-government-economic-rhetoric-change

    and http://www.adelaidereview.com.au/commentary/article/work-for-the-dole-a-myopic-policy-failure

    - as I was saying, three articles explain my perspective very well.

I realise that your perspective and mine will be different not just in the way we see economics in general but because we live in different countries. What gets up my nose is that my country, when compared to the US (and just about any other advanced western nation) is a very simple place to operate. We are not a complex society. We are blessed with abundant natural resources. We should be doing better than what we are, governments could produce policy which help build the economy, which provide opportunities. I'm not suggesting that government should do all the work nor get out of the way, I'm suggesting some creative policy which helped the economy grow would be good. It ain't happening with the current mob. In fact they're going to make welfare a way of life for a lot more people instead of creating conditions which allowed businesses to flourish and hire more people who were suitable trained and skilled.

In my opinion, the fundamental differences between left and right ideologies is that the right-wing generally believes constitutionally acknowledged, respected and protected individual rights and liberty built this most prosperous nation on earth, while the left-wing generally believes DC's ever-so-wise-and-benevolent central planners...politicians....are most responsible for America's success.

TL;DR: The right-wing holds the general opinion that overall prosperity is borne of individual liberty, while leftists tend to believe broad prosperity is a function of central government activism.

ManifestDestiny: "...whereas the left wing believes poor people are poor due to a lack of education, malnutrition, and just a overall unhealthy environment that they are raised in."

I would agree, except for malnutrition, if you added a lack of gainful employment, a lack of intact families, and a lack of hope in the future. Then we would have to discuss why the left wants to maintain all those conditions. Schools exist not to benefit the unions which exists to benefit the leftists. Children need a father like a fish needs a bicycle. The state can fill the role. Jobs, jobs, we don't need to stinkin' jobs. Bankrupt business, nationalize the banks, drive them out of the country. And, hope, get serious. The American Dream is dead and will never be. Your only hope is welfare and you don't need to read and write for that.

But, consider another difference Manifest Destiny. Liberals think people are basically bad and have to be controlled by the government. Conservatives think the government is inherently bad and needs to be controlled by the people.

They're either conditioned to that Hobbesian notion that man is inherently evil, or they're congenitally predisposed. If it's the latter, Tytler's Cycle will repeat until the sun burns out.

As the same players are largely involved, I believe this *slightly amended* quote by Suzanna Hupp sums it all up nicely:

The political left and right are also divided by the contrasts of "many called/few chosen" or "universal salvation" as they apply to job creation, education, literacy, disease prevention and any form of social safety net.

Our beliefs regarding politics seem to correlate amazingly well with our ideas regarding what happens to most people after we die.

Anyone with a rational brain knows that poverty is the result of corporate capitalism. It not only creates the rich elite hoarders of wealth, but it also creates the poor. That is the fact of the matter. The whole idea behind capitalism is that there was not enough to go around, and if there isn't enough to go around, this means that capitalism will decide who gets the stuff, and who does not. Poverty is built into capitalism. Such an easy thing for logic and reason to see. The trouble of course is the lack of both. And so some people will blame the poverty upon those in poverty. It is utter stupidity, but it makes them feel better about themselves, consoles their black little consciences.

Of course with modern technology and science there is enough to go around today, but we are stuck with a system based upon scarcity. And being greedy, desiring to satiate what cannot be satiated keeps this unsustainable system in place, But it will of course implode as that is the product of automation.

No conservative - NONE - denies that some people are the victim of bad circumstances (factory closings, layoff, etc.) and that's why we need a safety net. BUT: It is also VERY true that lots of poor people are poor by their own choices, whether it was stupid choices they made in school by dropping out or doing dope, or dumb choices later in life, or crime, and - yes - sometimes sheer laziness. That's just a fact.

As a conservative, I say, the people who are victims of bad circumstances (factory closings, layoff, etc.) need a safety net, and that safety net should be for THEM. But all the shiftless dope smoking lazy losers & criminals should not get any tax money UNLESS they can PROVE they are trying to change, and I mean PROVE it.

....but..... should the government make it appear that we are bankrupt on paper....... when this is really not necessary?

We are Bankrupt. Does anybody really grasp what ungodly size of 18 Trillion Dollars is? The size is so huge, its like saying the word "infinity" to someone: The brain does not really grasp it.

We can't pay our debt and we can't pay our bills. THAT is called Bankruptcy. This country is in for a cataclysmic economic event that will result in a modern day dark age.

... but..... WHY... have we defined ourselves as being 18 trillion dollars in debt?

Could it have anything to do with an influential segment of the population regarding strong unions demanding higher wages and benefits as one of the greatest evils?

Do you know who Dr. Moses Coady is?

    How about The Antigonish Movement?

Your premise is flawed because it's absolute. It's not that black and white. Pretty much everyone believes that a combination of free will and circumstance determines outcomes. The difference is how we weigh each factor.

The vast majority if conservatives don't believe everything's my fault, and the vast majority of liberals don't think nothings my fault.

Up here in Canada there are three economists who not only have a piece of paper proving that they are qualified... but they also have the courage to explain what is wrong with our Canadian banking and taxation system..... I quoted Harold Chorney, John Hotson and Mario Seccareccia in my 2008 campaign for municipal councillor.

    www.BankingSystemsFlaws.BlogSpot.ca/

You would be astonished how many of our political leaders do not understand the tremendous benefits of historical Canadian monetary policy.

In reality, both views are wrong/only true in part.
Some people are bad, but not all of them all the time.
Some governments are bad, but not all of them all of the time.
In any case, its true that its the people who ought to be controlling the government.
And we certainly should not simply stand around and let the bad people run the joint.

    What's worse?
Helping 100's of people who need a safety net,.....and 10 lazy criminals who who don't,
or, ensuring the 10 lazy criminals get nothing, while failing to help 100's of people who need a safety net?

'Nother question. Are you in favor of a WPA 2.0 or something similar?
And if so, what sorts of safe guards would you like to see implemented along with it?

Actually, the amount of space between 18T and infinity is so vast that your point was lost somewhere in the middle.
And BTW, you might not know this, but the United States as a country is awash in money.

True…… and we may well be close to being hit with a Tsunami of money…………. but the question is what will we do about this possibility…….. How can we alter our behaviour and thought patterns in such a way that will make the best of what is probably going to happen over the coming decade or two?

Hidden gold in Pastor Shane Warren visionary dream????
Over these past several months I have been given what appears to be a complete reinterpretation of a dream given to Pastor Shane Warren regarding the future of America.

As you can guess, I find this rather scary, because I am not a Pastor, and only a couple of times in my entire life have I been given a dream that I felt was meant to answer some of my questions and/or guide me in what to do?!

Shane Warren - America | Sid Roth - It's Supernatural
    http://sidroth.org/television/tv-archives/shane-warren-america
    -

Pastor Shane Warren in a dream that he knows is from God saw a hurricane of money that he understood to mean a massive devaluation of the USA dollar. He saw riots in the street that he understood to mean serious discontent, rioting...… he assumed that this meant food shortages.

I believe that his understanding of this vision is logical and accurate..... but...… the possible hidden gold under the surface of this vision can alter the formula for the financing of church outreach to the lost, the hungry, to orphans, to victims of the sex industry, to addicts...… and to the people who don't know their left hands from their right?!

So what we should just lay down and be worthless? It's called competition and it's the only thing that keeps a species evolving and surviving.

The president has become the embodiment of failure? His foreign policies, domestic issues, the global trend away from the Petrodollar.

Getting involved with Ferguson was his most ignorant mistake including bringing it up at the UN.

Cooperation needs to be considered as well.

If it were not for the "Antigonish Movement" fishermen and farmers in my part of the world would probably never have joined the upper middle class.
