I don't recall anybody saying that Israel was our only Middle East ally. Pretty sure that hasn't been said, so you title is wrong. What has been said is that Israel is the only true democracy in the middle east. They live by a set of values and rule of law that is like our own. Every other middle east country is either totaltarian or beseiged with military or Islamic coup, chaos and unstable.

Israel is our most dependable ally whose interests and values mirror our own. To choose Turkey over Israel or Jordan over Israel is like choosing those countries instead of France or the Netherlands.

Turkey is neither unstable or totalitarian. It's true they're much less like the US than Israel is but that only makes them fit in better in Southwest Asia

Israel is further unique in that they once were our catspaw in the area, and may yet be so again, though it wouldn't be with our full government's backing. Catspaws are dangerous things, they are by definition powerful in the area they're useful in but they have a tendency to think for themselves and look out for their own interests. Not something you can blame them for but often not what you want an ally to do either.

We have other allies in the middle east...but they are unstable and can change in a minute from an ally to an enemy. Israel is truely in the same catagory as France and the Netherlands---and if those countries resided in the Middle East, we would see them as the most dependable, the most important ally in that area because of our shared Western Values.

.I doubt anybody has said that we have ONLY ONE ALLY in the middle east. That is not even realistic. That is more of an untruth designed to pit against Israel.

John McCain: "Get over your temper tantrum, Mr. President. It's time that we work together with our Israeli friends and try to stem this tide of ISIS and Iranian movement throughout the region, which is threatening the very fabric of the region".

If only he had been elected....

Major springboard for operations from military to intelligence gathering. Israel is absolutely vital for us to conduct operations in that part of the world as they are stable and reliable as well as secure.

Our catspaw like the Lavon affair, or the bombing of the King David Hotel or the bombing of the USS Liberty?

I never said we worked with Israeli intelligence, I stated that they leave us alone to do our own thing for the most part.

And that's a big part of it. While we have other, "lesser" allies in the Middle East, we can't depend on them. Egypt was a decent ally for 30 years until Obama ran them off. Now, they're pretty close with Russia.

If we needed to base a military excursion in Israel today - we could. Some of our other 'allies' won't even let us fly over.

There are allies - and then there are allies.

Our oldest and most reliable ally in the ME is Saudi Arabia and they are not on the dole.

Turkey is not an American Ally, they denied assistance in Iraq and today with ISIL.
Jordan is an ally this is true, and so is Egypt.

Yes.. Why don't you read about it from Frank Jungers.. He was my neighbor and he was there with king FAisel who agonized over the decision.

Turkey has been overrun with refugees from Iraq (twice) and Syria once.............. They should button up their borders and stay out of it.

No surprise, given that those who founded Israel were Westerners in the first place.

I would not include Turkey as an ally to America when they have balked on many requests of cooperation with the US. Surely Egypt, Iraqi Kurds, and Lebanese Christians could be allied with America if it were not for this president's petulance, infantile and rejection. The facts show that Turkey is responsible for supplying AQ/ISIS with the munitions to destroy Syria and Iraq while buying the oil stolen by this terrorist group.

As to the thread, CKW (Post no. 2) pretty well said what I'd say and believe to be true. I didn't know Truman was first to recognize the State of Israel, then within 20 minutes. Others have come and gone over the years, but the US and Israel have maintain excellent relations since, this regardless Obama or his policy.

As for SA & OPEC, I'd suggest the US has donated trillions of dollars to their leaders, purchasing oil. As for agonizing over sales of oil to the US in the 70's.... well I'll just say an ally would never do that....

Sorry Jack.. the Israelis tried to pull off a false flag targeting Americans in Cairo in 1954... and they bombed the USS Liberty..

The Saudis warned Nixon in 1973.. but thru the embargo they continued to supply the USN.
