Marriage is whatever the individual believes it is now and my right to marry Jane AND Sue cannot be violated. On what basis can the state stop me now if my fundamental right to marry is something I decide what that means.
So if just 1 state made it legal, then you'd support a movement to make it legal in all 50 states? It's current legal status is the sole reason you're opposed to it?
........Yes. It used to be between people of differing genders. But that's changed thanks to the new Supreme Court ruling. Every argument used to legalize gay marriage will be used to get polygamy legalized.
I'm not opposed to it. If one state made it legal we would have to at minimum discuss if their marriage is recognized in other states.
Some of us are not opposed to it. Just because I'm not out there fighting for it, doesn't mean I'm not for it. While I would never want more than one spouse, doesn't mean the next person shouldn't be allowed. They should try and fight for it. I'll be behind them on it.
Feel free to offer why polygamous couples shouldn't have the same right as gays. I'm detecting a lot of "I got mine, (*)(*)(*)(*) everyone else" type attitude from supporters of gay marriage.
marriage makes unrelated people family family is already family thus no reason to marry simple - - - Updated - - - they do, both can marry as many people as they want, just only one at a time..... .
That cuts both ways, doesn't it? People are still free to believe that marriage is the union between a man and woman and "gay marriage" is an oxymoron. Just because homosexuals are able to enter into a contract that is similar to marriage doesn't mean that it's the union between a man and woman (marriage). Then again, as Antonin Scalia said, words no longer have meaning...
I don't think the traditional goals of marriage apply anymore, do they? The religious aspect is long gone, and so has the historical definition of including a man and woman. Why should it only be include one person if 3 people decide they want it?
If we are going historical then there really is no reason to ban polygamy. It's in the bible after all.
This could lead to many states not offering marriage licenses at all and switching to just civil unions.
as long as everyone is treated equal and it's called the same for everyone, then it doesn't matter, because a marriage from another state is still honored by their state, so what they decide to call it for legal purposes is irrelevant .
Your hatred of Christians is quite disturbing. Do you also call all non believers that oppose gay marriage a Christian too?
I don't understand what the big deal is when it comes to issuing marriage licenses. None of our opinions on gay marriage matter. The only person whose opinion matters is the person that will stamp the marriage certificate. Just what exactly does the govt employee do before placing a stamp on the marriage certificate? How can it be against one's religion to place a stamp on a form? Are Christians saying it is ok for them to approve 2 Satanists being married, but it is against their religion to approve 2 men? Does the marriage license stamper see 2 M's for male on the form, and that's enough to say, "No, my religion forbids me stamping this!"? I'm confused as to what the debate is here. Just put the stamp on the form, just like you do for Satanists, Muslims, and many other people that are not really married according to the Christian religion.
Clearly you didn't read my post and will continue whistling past the graveyard of reality. Congrats on that!
Last week was a very VERY bad one for Thumpers. WHO's shorts are in a bunch? OmF ---> serious? Thanks for your acknowledgment!
I think it was a good day for those who seek to manipulate Christians for political benefit. The answer to this is not to alienate and oppose Christians. We must not allow those few who would seek to use them for political gain to do that. I have a message for Christian marriage certificate stampers: You already approve marriage licenses for all kinds of religions and lifestyles that you don't agree with. There is separation of church and state. You don't have to agree with them to perform a government function.
Heretic! Blasphemer! www.ulc.net Ordained minister holding the titles Cleric, Philosopher and Prophet plus a Doctor of Metaphysics degree from the True Universal Life Church! Anyway ,LOL, if a State did eliminate marriage in that State couldn't citizens just go somewhere else and marry and come back in and they would have to recognize it now so I don't see the point unless you get everyone who can perform a marriage at the State and Territory level to agree in a massive compact to do so.
