My girlfriend's family is made of Muslims (they're Bosnian), and I want to make a good impression. Is there anything in particular I could do to try to get on their good side?

Why? It's 11:30. No funeral house is going to be open now.

They're good people. They're not going to do anything stupid like that.

If you're not a muslim they shouldn't even be speaking to you. The fact that you're dating their muslim daughter has Mohammed spinning in his grave.

They're going to be more concerned I'm not a Bosnian then an Atheist. But I want to impress with trying to understand the culture better. And one way, is to learn more about Islam.

    Read the hadiths.

    http://www.quranexplorer.com/Hadith/English/index.html

An excellent resource is the Islam in Perspective blog in the Saudi newspaper Arab News. http://www.arabnews.com/variety/islam

I think it presents a much more moderate version of Islam than that practiced in most places, especially in Saudi Arabia. I find the articles to be very informative.

Unfortunately I really have no advice for you here, could you be a little more specific about what you want to know exactly? Besides that, what Wyrd of Gawd said in his last post above is pretty good advice.

The little that I know about Bosnians is that they are not usually the most religious Muslims - hence why her parents have no concerns about her dating a non-Muslim man - correct me if I am wrong about their... "religiosity" I am not judging them on it. As for Bosnian culture, I really know very little about that to give you any advice on what the parents might except. Sorry.

No, it's good. I understand, even I don't know all the details. From what I understand, they don't want her dating outside the religion. They don't know I'm dating her. I would like to, if the situation allows for it, to meet them in person and tell them I'm dating her, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. But thank you anyways. It does mean alot.

Say : O ye that reject Faith!
I worship not that which ye worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship,
Nor will ye worship that which I worship.
To you be your Way, and to me mine.

I figured this thread could use some humour, since it's about at the limit for threads here.

This is why I laugh when Islamophobes try to throw fatwa's in my face.

    lol

The Communist Party has reportedly banned teachers, students and government employees in Xinjiang province from fasting.

The government has also reportedly instructed Muslim shopkeepers and restaurant owners to sell alcohol and cigarettes.

Ankara summoned the Chinese ambassador last week about the reports that Uighurs in Xinjiang have been banned from fasting during Ramadan.

Islam is the most popular religion in China among young people despite a government crackdown on Ramadan and historic persecution of the Muslim Uighur minority, according to a new survey.

Of the five religions recognised by the atheist state, Islam has the largest proportion of followers under 30, with 22.4% of Chinese Muslims fitting this age bracket, according to the China Religion Survey carried out by a research centre at Beijing’s Renmin University.
