Breastfeeding/Pumping in Public?

Interesting that something as fundamental as feeding an infant is controversial with many demanding covering up or doing it in private.

Maybe all breast feeding mothers should wear burqa's and carry their kids underneath.

Oh wait....

 

Actually, breast feeding in the past was much more common than today. I saw lots of it in the 50s, when it was not unusual for women to feed their infants in public. So a much more repressive sexual era, saw nothing wrong with it, but in Sodom and Gomorrah America, some people do not like it. LOL. Cosmic sized irony.

Hell, I still remember wet nurses.

I am not disturbed by breast feeding. I am disturbed when mentally disturbed people feel the need to get naked in public...

 

On the floor of a restaurant? Yea.

Again, just because you associate a woman breastfeeding with two people having sex on a restaurant floor does not mean everyone suffers from such strange thoughts.

 

I vote "Sort of – ok in public if they try to keep it private (e.g. put a blanket over herself)"

you can be respectful of those around you and still breast feed in public, the when and where also plays into it

I breast Fed in public 32 years ago and 16 years ago. It was never a big deal ....most likely because I didn't have an activist agenda to shock people. The problem might be that some women have a desire to sit in a public place and whip it out in full view as some sort of statement...shock jocks. There is no need to hang out showing nipples.

 

It is the most natural thing in the world. Anyone who's offended can just look away.

Many of the arguments for it, likely go away if you change it just a little bit. Scratching your sweaty testicles is a perfectly natural act that should be of no concern to anybody who is comfortable with the human body. A man should be able to whip it out and rub it while sitting next to a breast feeding woman. It is all very human after all.

 

Ive seen some women do it so discretely and i barely noticed. No problem.

And ive seen others do it so sloppily they obviously were seeking attention, so i gave it to them.

Doesn't seem very similar, and I couldn't care less about "natural". There are better reasons for genitalia to be private than breasts in terms of spreading disease getting high risk fluids and microparticles of feces all over. Plus the act you mentioned doesn't really have a compelling reason to be done. Breastfeeding, on the other hand, is something that is necessary for the optimal health of an infant. If it is not done regularly the breastfeeding will fail to feed the infant and the infant will need to be on formula, making them less healthy in terms of immune system and metabolism.

Yep, a person does have a problem if they have a deep need to see women breast feeding in public.....maybe it's the only time they get to see bare breasts .....

 

I said other. I'm for it being okay, legally and socially, in public, but I'm not in that crowd that can't fathom any justification for restricting it. I can perfectly understand and articulate the other side I think better than most people in it - the breasts, whether we like it or not, are sexualized. This isn't "because society...", it's because human nature. In that regard, exposing the breast is on about the same level as if a man decided to walk around the city with his penis hanging out. Both constitute public exposure, but in an effort to appear pro-mother or pro-women people prop up a double standard.

Again, breasts are sexual - it doesn't matter if a woman wants hers to or not, just as it doesn't matter if a man wants his penis to be a sexualized object - breasts and penises are inherently sexual objects. I can easily fathom a potentially good medical reason to say that walking pantless has benefits - the simple bit is that it still remains sexualized.

And to be clear, this is a double standard that I'm pretty much aware of, feel is worth highlighting, but one which I don't have a great problem with. Here, I more have an issue with people who are fine with public breastfeeding acting as if anyone opposed to it has to be a complete (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) and a jerk - there are legitimate reasons to oppose it, I just don't find them to be overwhelming.

 

The "optimal" health can be achieved by pumping and bottle feeding breast milk without needing to breast feed in public. Your position disregards that things that can be transmitted sexually can be transmitted by breast milk as well.

 

Men have a biological need to see womens breast. I'm for any exposing of them in public. Where is the problem. If you don't want me to see them then keep them out of view.

 

Simply put...most guys truly enjoy seeing and liking female breasts. Most guys also know they have other uses that involve others sucking on them.

If the guy takes issue with her using them as required he is either jealous or stupid.

Women do not seem to care....I wonder why that is?

It's fine to breastfeed in public. Exposure is minimal and only for a few seconds. Pumping should probably be done in a more private area--there is no baby head to get in the way of exposure.
