I don't put Karl on the same level as Harpo_One was genius, the other was just a Communist.

Even as a supporter of his, that was a pretty big blow. The only thing I can think of that compares was Trump's flub saying that Putin would never invade Ukraine. At least Johnson has had the moral fortitude to own up to this fiasco, rather than pulling an "I never said that" Trumpian lie.

How would you feel if you were in the same situation as they are?

We've got so many undecideds because Trump has alienated so many Republicans. They're gone - they ain't coming back to Trump. Clinton may not have made the case for them to vote for her yet, but if Gary Johnson keeps dropping the ball like he has, they aren't going to vote for him either.... that's why I say Johnson's loss is Clinton's gain, and vice versa.

That's wishful thinking I am afraid. The idea that undecided voters can't decide between Hillary and Johnson is beyond ludicrous and does not pass the smell test. That would also be reflected in 2 way polls, all Johnson and undecided voters would move to the Clinton's column and she'd be like 15% ahead. Obviously that's not the case.

The undecided voters are deciding between the candidates from 2 primary parties, as they do in all elections. The only open question in their minds is whether Trump can be trusted to lead the nation. All other questions have long been answered. The #neverTrump Republicans voting for Johnson could not care less if he's heard of Aleppo, for them it's merely a protest vote.

That's not what I'm saying... Johnson is an attractive alternative to a lot of anti-Trump Republicans right now - the last time I looked he was at about 9%... I'd say 7% or so of that is pretty solid right now. By my reckoning, 1% of the solid support is naturally Libertarian and 6% of that is the protest vote you're talking about - people who find both Trump AND Clinton to be unsupportable. Maybe 2-3% of Johnson's 9% is soft.... that's what I'm talking about.... they're the never-Trump but maybe Clinton crowd.

Something to think about... I think if the Republicans had grabbed a clue and nominated someone sensible (like Kasich), they're be polling about 8% above where Trump is now... probably in the high 40's - maybe even a whisker under 50%.

Well, they are not undecided, they are in Johnson's column and I doubt that this gaffe will change the minds of the protest vote, they don't expect to win, they expect to protests. And they hate Hillary and have a few other options like not voting or writing in before voting for her. And social conservatives among them may well pull the lever for Trump based purely on the supreme court nomination. Anyway, I was talking about true undecides who can't choose between Hillary and Trump. They will probably end up choosing Trump if he behaves through the end of the campaign, which is a huge if.

It's not all about winning. The republicans have finally figured out that whether an establishment Republican or an establishment Democrat wins in November - they end up with the same corrupt, out of touch, lying self-serving ruling class, their donors, lobbyists and special interests. The republicans chose to take their chances with Trump preferring to lose but start a pro-American/pro-Middle Class movement to winning and maintaining the unacceptable and suicidal status quo.

I think anyone who polls as "undecided" at this point is probably going to stay home come election day - especially once they get deluged with the tsunami of negative ads that are in the pipeline. I think this year we'll see the lowest turn-out we've seen in any Presidential election since the 1920's.

How well do you know your Shakespeare? Have you ever read Julius Caesar? It seems to me that the Ancient Romans were faced with a similar question in 44 B.C..... do we stick with the safe establishment choice of Cassius and Brutus, or do we support the dynamic and charismatic Caesar? The Romans chose Caesar and his heirs... it may have brought them glory, but it cost them their souls.

This one ancient anecdote should not preclude people from occasionally abandoning the safe choice and taking their chances with the unknown, should it? :) And an America with $20 trillion national debt, declining standard of living, skyrocketing income inequality, open borders and corrupt ruling classes may well have lost its soul and its glory a long time ago by making these safe establishment choices :)

As a die hard Trump fan, I am glad to see that Johnson blew it. Any vote that is not for Trump is helping Hillary, so I like to see bad things happen to everybody besides Trump. If Johnson had only been wearing one of Hillary's ear pieces, he would not have had such a bad day...

My guess is that would depend on whether or not you subscribed to the "Great Man" theory of history.

Opinions vary on who it hurts/helps more.

It depends on whether one feels the stronger emotion is never-Trump or never-Clinton.

Personally, I think never-Trump is a more powerful motivation for undecideds.

either 1 of two things will happen now. Some of the Johnson voters wil move to Trump or stay home. It will be a small percentage since I have a feeling most Johnson voters could give a crap less about foriegn policy. It will be intersting to see if his numbers move and by how much

Indendent identifiers in th epolling says differently. Most self identified Independents are going to Trump

I'm not a Johnson Supporter (Go Trump Go!), but I heard the question and the response and immediately thought the questioner was an arrogant ass trying to do agotcha. I don't think it hurt him...most people have commonsense and seen what the questioner was doing.

I think it ws a fair question. Aleppo made every major news outlet the day before the question was asked

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/08/world/middleeast/syria-attack-peace-plan.html?_r=0

whether Johnson supporters give a damn about foriegn policy as much as the beltway wonks and the media does is the question

I've been watching the campaigns pretty extensively. Watch CNN, Fox and Msnbc in the mornings before work where all the conversation is politics. Heard about emails, Generals being trashed, firing vets. Aleppo seem to come out of the blue ..... Was aleppo even brought up during the Forum between Trump and Hillary? Perhaps that is where I missed it. But again....if I was a johnson supporter, I wouldn't be phased. I'm more at issue with a secretary of state not understanding security and not showing commonsense handling of classified information.

yeah it has been in the news pretty extensivly . might want to add the BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, and Haaretz to your reading list. Nothing to fear though, no Libertarians would ever vote Democratic with hillary's nanny government policy

Perhaps we should blame Google, but Google Aleppo and all you get is this thing with Johnson. Google BBC Aleppo or Guardian Aleppo and you get a few old articles. It's not a hyped up thing yet. What do we need to do about it? How does it affect the well being of the United States? is it the picture of the small dust covered boy that makes it important? Why didn't the arrogant ass ask Johnson about the Christians ..Christian children being targeted and killed?

So....there are many bad things going on and some are noted and some aren't. Ultjmately a n American president needs to focus on America security and not get caught up in dust covered victims in a foreign city.

    I agree with you.

And it seems that question out of the blue caught Johnson flat-footed to the extent that he seemed to ask What is a Leppo? As soon as Syria was mentioned he was back on track.
