    I can get behind this.

Assuming the Republicans will actually vote to pay for it. That's the important part.

It has always been fought by liberals who think the money could be better spent on welfare programs. Ted Cruz also champion space exploration.

    Read much?

"I will free NASA from the restriction of serving primarily as a logistics agency for low Earth orbit activity… Instead we will refocus its mission on space exploration.”

I don’t like all our eggs in one basket of deplorables. The moon as a launching pad, and Mars as the best place to send illegal aliens.

Only if you believe the correct punishment for crossing an invisible line on a map is a death sentence.

You are aware a considerable number of illegals are children, yes?

Low Earth Orbit is where we are now because of the cost of lifting payloads from Earth. We would get more benefit from building a permanent base at L4 or L5 to construct spacecraft that can act as cyclers between locations further away.

Why not just wait 'till it's economically feasible for the private sector to do this?

Since tax money is forcibly expropriated from its rightful owners, it seem especially unjust to use it to satisfy your curiosity.

We have no illegals on Mars yet, so there can’t be children there unless they are Martians (who may not be too happy with their Wampanoag sanctuary cites for our illegal alien pilgrims).

You may be right, if there is no water on the moon, or other stuff that could be used. I am thinking more along the lines of getting stuff acuminated for a massive Mars convoy, fire and reload, moving along a rail (maglev thingy), make fuel on the moon, saving the fuel for reentry. Might be stuff that could be mined.

Good, this is the kind of stuff NASA should be doing anyways. Leave the ocean temps to NOAA, don't pay them for only the answers you demand and reward factual evidence with bonuses.

I'd LOVE to see actual pics of the surfaces of Jupiter's moons. One of the most fascinating pictures I've ever seen, IMO, is from the deepest reaches of the universe, as far out as we could zoom. It was taken with the Hubble and is referred to as the eXtreme or Ultra Deep Field, billions of light years away and thousands of galaxies just like ours. What's out there, possible life forms, etc... I don't think we're alone, not with this many galaxies.

This picture combines 10 years of watching the same patch of sky. This (the universe) is one of the few things that lets me escape reality up/down/over here on Earth.

Yes. And I don't believe that we will make robots with very complex forms of behavior and very high functionality. From the earth to control the robots too much lag time. We need a manned base on the moon.

C'mon, you guys aren't united on this stance. There are republicans who would rather not pay taxes than those who would like to pay for space exploration.

Pretty hard to dig a 100km deep hole. Would cost a (*)(*)(*)(*)load of money, but we've never been down there before. Might be something there, who knows.

Good excuse to drop a casual tril.

I agree that we need to bore into Europa but the last time I looked the environmentalists were blocking us from testing our ice boring machines in Antarctica. But the Russians are there drilling into the lakes. If nothing else we might find all sorts of beneficial compounds in the life forms there and on Europa.

That's one of the problems with not having external bases.

We can't see a lot of planet destroying asteroids, and if we did, we would have to have a good window of notice. Europa would be the perfect place for an early warning outpost, Jupiter is known to slingshot or absorb asteroids and comets frequently.

Ever heard of Mars One? They're actually getting volunteers to travel to Mars and start a colony. Once there, you can't return. Pretty sure it's starting next decade.

Can't afford manned space exploration, its just a money pit anyway. We went to the moon, cost a fortune, got bragging rights but that's about it. Sending people to Mars at this stage is a scam, let the billionaire's play with that pipe dream using their own money. All the little Millennial's think Star Trek is real and want to dump everything into their fantasy.

What we need is a spacecraft capable of traveling light speed and faster. I'm sure there's a formula out there somewhere.

Where do you come up with that crap? Republicans don't want their taxes wasted on lowlife lazy bums. Space Exploration is completely different and far more beneficial.

There's things buried below Antarctica that haven't been seen in hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years...

When you're digging up dinosaur (*)(*)(*)(*) to fuel a rocket instead of harvesting the most abundant energy source in the universe, yeah it will be costly.

I say we develope something that can harvest gravity, since it's everywhere and constantly pulling on everything.

Yes, unmanned exploration is cheaper but still carries a risk-

At 1/3 earth's gravity, I'll bet Mars will have an effect on the physical development of anyone staying there long-term, and especially on anyone born and raised there.

    Or one in Lunar orbit.

    - - - Updated - - -

They're actually getting volunteers to travel to Mars and commit slow suicide from radiation poisoning and starvation.

    Fixed it for you.
