True but likely not true with someone that's trolling or merely lacks critical thinking ability.

Why slant? I wrote what I wrote. Why attempt to highjack it to mean something you want? Do you believe that what I wrote is somehow mutually exclusive of what Ivanka tweeted? Do tell....

And if you live in a poor area that can't just raise local taxes easily?

Part of the point of federal funding is to help equalize things. Relying heavily on local tax bases just leads to wealthy communities having great services and schools, and poor communities having crappy ones. Which just entrenches the class system and makes social mobility difficult.

Hey, doom, I'm NOT Amish & I happen to use my local library fairly regularly. I travel often, and before I go I almost always run to library and grab a book or two for the flight. It's usually a busy place, too. Surprising how many kids I see there doing homework. It's probably one of the few quiet places kids who actually want to learn can go to study.
But anyway, I'm not in favor of slashing their funds, although, like most federal programs, I'm sure there's unsubstantial waste in how the dollars are allocated. But whatever.....

Why do you have the knee-jerk assumption that there must be substantial waste in the program?

Do you feel like you should maybe seek evidence before making such an assumption?

The vast majority of the IMLS budget is direct grants to libraries. Not much room for waste there.

??? The founding fathers didn't fund local libraries. That is the role of the State and local governments.

    Good reason to convert…

I use Overdrive at my library and ordered quite a few books like The Goldfinch, and if you are the first to order it, you get it first. https://volusia.overdrive.com/

The selection of educational e-books isn’t so great but it is getting better as more and more e-books are used by schools. I would like to see a lot more of that stuff.

They had an entire selection of the Waverley novels, acquired back in the 60’s, nobody ever checked them out, and they were so old they were falling apart. I made it my quest to read them all before they died.

There is still something to be said for print versions of books, all in one place, that you do not have to buy, for research.

The Lockheed library wasn’t public, and some stuff couldn’t be checked out, and cannot be found on the Internet, ever, so stick that up your online stupidity.

The problem is the institutions, other than the public library, belong to this traitor now:

“The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam." (Obama, advocating genocide of all life in the universe that does not submit)

Translation: The future does not belong to science.

“Promote then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge. In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.” (Washington's Farewell Address 1796) http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/washing.asp

Nope, that "translation" is incorrect because it has been taken completely out of all context.

Obama was giving a speech at the UN following the terrorist attack in Paris.

Um, what a crap interpretation of that statement.

Obama said that as part of a speech condemning the Charlie Hedbo attack. It was a condemnation of hate speech. It was part of a list of things he condemned, none of which should be controversial:

The future must not belong to those who target Coptic Christians in Egypt — it must be claimed by those in Tahrir Square who chanted, “Muslims, Christians, we are one.” The future must not belong to those who bully women — it must be shaped by girls who go to school, and those who stand for a world where our daughters can live their dreams just like our sons.

The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country’s resources — it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs, the workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the women and men that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.

Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims and Shiite pilgrims. It’s time to heed the words of Gandhi: “Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.” Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies, that’s the vision we will support.

Never mind the very specific definition of the word "slander". He was not saying it is unacceptable to criticize Islam. And that whole paragraph was both an outreach to, and a calling out OF, Muslims. He was saying, "Look, we do not support Islamaphobes. Like you, we condemn hate speech aimed at Muslims. But we expect you, in return, to also condemn hateful speech and acts aimed at Christians and Jews."

To view that as "anti-science" takes a real gift for distorting reality.

Are we supposed to keep funding an obsolete thing because it makes liberals "feel good." Too bad. If it takes federal funds to keep this "agency" alive, then let it go. Kindle and other such things have replaced going to the library. PROGRESS people. You want progress, don't you?

The true context includes two other separate acts of official statecraft, that when all taken together clearly deplores and rejects, in violation of the First Amendment and oath of office to protect it, any and all efforts to denigrate and slander (depending upon perspective) the false prophet of Islam:

Official Statecraft of the United States of America, the first one was posted on the State Department's website:

"The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others." (Clinton)

"We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others." (Obama)

Now get your Engrish teacher to replace the word "others" with anything you choose, including the word "Shaitan":

The Republican/Libertarian agenda of the last 3+ decades has been to impoverish the middle class.
