A thread for all fractions of the UK to be united in the up coming EU talks... To put aside our differences for the country. It could very well be 'us Vs. them in the EU' but I very much hope for a peaceful Brexit. Never mind what party she is, she's now Brexit PM. Let's just forget about location and party, and be a United Kingdom in these up and coming talks with Europe and the world.
I'd like to see a cross-party group doing the brexit negotiations, since we have a hung parliament it seems the only fair way.
I think we're not doing that because no one shares the same vision for Brexit? IDK. I mean, that would be a good idea, everybody getting together for the same cause, but honestly, I don't think anyone agrees exactly what that is, so, we get what we've got.
We need a deal which means we can stay in the single market and the customs union, which is not May's position. Northern Irelend needs fixing too. The negotiatiing position needs to reflect the result of the GE.
The result of the general election is a re-affirming of Brexit and a clear mandate for a hard Brexit. There was one clear choice people could make. There was one party which is very pro EU - the Lib Dems. They didn't get anywhere. When people voted in the referendum they clearly assumed we would leave all aspects of the EU. The paper did not say, which bits would you like to leave. It was a black and white question. Staying in the single market and customs union would be the worst possible outcome and choosing to ignore the referendum
Can't do it even if there was agreement on what is good for the country, because the parties are competing with each-other for power. To be frank. May owns this for good or bad. So any other party is empowered by a bad deal for the UK. We're sitting at the negotiating table with lesser powers kicking the legs from under our seat. One hope is Corbyn is a genuine person who will try and get the best for the country. Which means shutting up and letting the front team negotiate in peace.
Why? I think we would prefer that, but not at the expense of open borders and an inability to strike independent trade deals. We need a good balance. There are solutions there. But BOTH sides need to compromise. If the EU cannot compromise with their largest trading partner, we will do well to be shot of it entirely.
IMO it would be catastrophic not to have a deal which encompasses the single market, customs union and City of London passporting. Hopefully the EU will compromise too.
Nah. It won't be good, but catastrophic is hyperbolic. If we can't reach a solution then its a hard Brexit whether we like it or not. The Article 50 trigger has been set, so if we cannot reach agreement then we drop off into WTO rules at the end of the period. I'm confident that we'll reach a better accommodation than that, but I'm far less confident that the EU27 will get their act into gear and vote in time.
Let's not beat around the bush To our European neighbours, the UK is cold rainy rock in the North Atlantic with ugly terraced houses and the food is terrible and we distrust anything European and fancy an old lady called The Queen. That's how they see us, it's not how we see ourselves.
Since it's not the EU's position either, there isn't much point us taking it. It's not on offer. And given that our country just voted to end that, May would have a tough time, signing us back up to it before we have even left the EU. General election isn't where EU policy is democratically decided in this country. That is EU election. Farage, not May. May's got a referendum result to deliver. Or we get to kill her. That's the deal. She's fair game for all whacko's for the rest of her life. The next Jo Whoevershewas. After we leave the EU, any and all are free to campaign to re-join it. When you think you have enough, call a referendum. General election decided who will represent us in Westminster, not the EU. EU membership, was decided by referendum. Not by General Election. EU elections decide who represents us in the EU. No mandate May? Has no mandate. She wishes she has.... she thought she was going to get it... But she didn't. So hung parliament. If every one doesn't agree. Nothing gets passed. Which is good. What we need. No one gets to piss off the other guy. We all agree it, or nothing happens. May needs referendums before she can agree any Euro deal, because she has no mandate of her own and she won't hand over to Farage, who does. Although to be fair, he seems to be running the negotiations anyway. She should let him. Takes the heat out if for her and her party.
Don't think about yourself, think about UK needing a united front in the face of the up and coming negotiations and that any talk like that can be exposing weakness which could further and forever damage a free global Britain that could potentially be trading wider than the EU.
Blair signed us up for the EU, not the Tory's. He said he would give is a referendum before we joined. He thought he was lying when he said it. Haw. Look at his face now we've just had it. Not smiling any more.
One's a traitor and the other's dead, look, we need a united front. So let this thread be a tool to reeducate yourself You love your country They only want to cheat Freedom is our friend Money is our power
What difference does it make. All the other Labour leaders since promised a referendum too and didn't give it. Same for every Tory until Cameron. And he didn't exactly volunteer. Labour got us in, Tory's got us out. That's the way it happened.
Sorry, do not come crying because it is blowing up in your face, you split the country, now live with it and stop begging for help.
We've got our weakest leader since Chamberlain about to make a deal with the Germans, what could possibly go wrong?
Selfish, selfish Britain, only thinks about me me me. Always want to claim, never want to take charity or work.
Depends if you ever want to re-join the EU or not mate. Looks to me like you could use all the help you can get. Once we are out you can start campaigning to get back in again. But you won't be able to do it on your own. You'll need to win a referendum. And for that you are going to need help. More help than you had last time.
Not so much, she has no mandate to make deals and they aren't offering any. The worst that can happen is more time and money get's wasted on political theatre. While Mrs Merkel and Mrs May pretend to be in control of something they are not.
