Most Americans met Wednesday night’s news that Arizona Senator John McCain was facing a dire diagnosis of brain cancer with shows of respect for the elder statesman and former prisoner of war. But to some on the extreme right, the longtime Republican is a traitor worthy of scorn, presumably because of his willingness to work with Democrats, as well as his criticism of President Donald Trump.

The attack on McCain--a war hero who spent more than five years in a North Vietnamese prison—is faintly reminiscent of the early days of Trump’s presidential campaign. During a family values summit in Iowa in the summer of 2015, just a month after he’d announced his seemingly quixotic bid for the White House, Trump lashed out at McCain: “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

At the time, Trump was angry because McCain had complained that Trump "fired up the crazies" during an anti-immigration rally in Phoenix.

Trump has in no way endorsed or encouraged the alt-right’s attacks on McCain, which have thus far been limited to the fringes of digital discourse. Trump sent a statement of support for McCain on Wednesday. "Senator John McCain has always been a fighter. Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon," that statement said.

    ----------------------------------------------------

I have heard this multiple times. They are saying God, or KArma, or some other force, struck down McCain, for handing over the dossier to Comey, and that Comey would face a similar fate soon.

Im sure they value all our lives MUCH more than that, DONT THEY?
What seems clear is, those that get dread diseases, DESERVE THEM, and who are Republicans to get in the way of GOD's will. Those ill, should accept their fate, and improve the lot for right wingers.

We are allowing the dismantlers of the Administrative state, to determine who and how we get life saving help?

Im sure we all remember how Trump said he PREFERRED those not captured.

I would like to ask, what GOD, or KArma, or? has in store for me, as I have written many things critical of Trump, and even mentioned the dossier.

Do I have a snowdens chance in hell of escape from brain cancer?

    God works in mysterious ways.

But sometimes things are pretty clear, like why he gave us Trump over Hillary.

Not many do even under the best scenario :( John's 80yo, his time was already measured in month already. MPO he has had a full life, he has left a legacy and he will be remember for a very long time in U.S. History, far cry more then I expect when they boil all the water out of my dead ass ;) I simply approach it "death" with an odd curiosity, I've never been there "CLOSE Twice" and no one has come back to explain it :) Don't get me wrong, I don't invite it but I really don't fear it either, just another part of life to me, God, Karma? No need to dwell and speculate, I promise, we'll all get our answer soon enough!

Trump has been instrumental in bringing those sick comments about McCain's situation.

Trump started the disgusting, ridiculous attacks on McCain months ago, negating his standing as an American hero, stating he didn't like "losers" when McCain didn't win the presidential elections. . .and a few more!

This is where you see the difference between the class that has left the White House (President Obama's comment on McCain's condition), and the classless clown who OCCUPIES the White House today!

Man, I remember how hated McCain was on the left in 2008 when he, an elderly white male Republican, dared to challenge the Democratic 'Black Messiah' Obama for the throne. McCain was ravaged and ridiculed by the same mainstream media outlets that rolled out the red carpet for their anointed candidate. McCain was called GWB's 3rd term, and considering how hated GWB was (movies were made about the cheerful world we'd live in if he was assassinated early on in his Presidency), nobody wanted that.

But now, magically, the same people who had nothing but contempt for McCain in 2008 are suddenly concerned about his health. What's changed?

To my recalling, McCain was NEVER HATED!. . .President Obama was preferred, and McCain was criticised for selecting (although it appears not to have been HIS decision!) the stupid Sarah Palin as his running partner!

But McCain was ALWAYS admired for his service to this country and his status as hero. . .until the orange clown came to power!

I do not get what you are saying. Sounds to me like President Trump's response to McCain's illness is graceful and appropriate. Are you suggesting that because he didn't always agree with him politically that anything disgusting that comes out of anyone's mouth about McCain is Trump's fault? That's a big leap, isn't it? If I don't like you, does that make it my fault if you get sick? Strange logic.

Also, don't generalize all conservatives unless you think all liberals should be responsible for what disgusting antifa does.

I know! I thought of that too. Hey maybe this is THOSE PEOPLE'S FAULT! It's karma, right? Since they disagreed with McCain back in 2008, they probably caused his illness!

Your rewriting of history isn't convincing. I was around, he was hated just as much as GWB was, just as much as Trump is, etc. You people do this with every Republican candidate/President. You're not fooling anyone.

YOU are not fooling anyone! Sarah Palin was laughed at. . .If McCain had not made the mistake to take her on. . .he might have had a chance to the presidency!

    Really?

Apparently Trump waited until TODAY, July 21, to call McCain and wish him "speedy recovery!"

President Obama send this tweet TWO DAYS AGO!

Barack Obama on Twitter: "John McCain is an American hero & one of ...

"On Sunday's Face the Nation, Obama supporter retired Gen. Wesley Clark, remarkably, went there: "I don't think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president." (Full context here.) So did liberal blogger John Aravosis, writing that "[g]etting shot down, tortured, and then doing propaganda for the enemy is not command experience." On Monday, former Obama adviser Rand Beers argued that McCain's isolation as a POW limited his insight on national security issues."

They weren't calling him a "war hero" back in 2008.

    With a notable exception -
The SMEAR of McCain took place in 2000 when the slime-ball Karl Rove waged a vile smear campaign and gave us the idiot president - the hatred was from the GOP, not the democratic party.

The statements of support are pretty universal.

    From Barack Obama:
John McCain is an American hero & one of the bravest fighters I've ever known. Cancer doesn't know what it's up against. Give it hell, John.

    From Donald Trump:
Senator John McCain has always been a fighter. Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon.

This might be where you see a difference. Me? I don't see too much difference...

It's the Comey syndrome revisited. Who do they think they're kidding?

I'm an atheist, but this left me wondering. If there were a god working in mysterious ways I would say a real doosy would be to make the guy President in order to get him in jail for all the crimes he has committed. A billionaire might get away with everything Trump has done, but a President wouldn't
