He can release returns that are the subject of an IRS audit; offering that as a reason for why the returns can't be released is bullshit.

Plus, he lied about his intent to release them anyway. He's a flimflam man.

He didn't say the audit prevented it he said on advisement of his tax attorney's which is proper advisement on their part.

Provide another form of proof. Something beyond his attorney's statement in a non-binding letter.

The talking point of the legality of it is just that a talking point.

 

So bad on so many levels. If Cohen were testifying in a court of law the judge would instruct the jury that, if they wish, they can disregard everything Cohen says because he is a known and repeated perjurer and liar. But he said what you like to hear so onward and downward.

The congress has no business looking at anything just to see if they might find something that looks bad. They are not investigating any crime by getting his tax returns. They are simply expanding the witch hunt from the executive branch to include the legislative branch in the hunt. Their pompous rationalizations might satisfy you, but not me.

Accepting the word of officers of the court, Trump's tax attorneys, at face value is nowhere near a "massive assumption." No, I know the IRS can miss stuff; but you want Pelosi and Cummings to audit the IRS and their assessment of multi-hundred-page highly complex return? Pelosi, who doesn't even know that natural gas is a fossil fuel? Why not have my 12-year old grandson do it? It'd be faster and cheaper.

Congressional oversight is to check on how the government is doing. Trump's tax returns aren't within a billion miles of that function, even if there was probable cause -- which there isn't.

 

That's certainly not "legal advice". Even assuming that it came from his "tax attorney", it has nothing to do with whether he can, or can't, release his returns.
