And this is how Democracy truly dies. When you punish, or even want to punish, people for saying things that you don't like you are not allowing actual democracy. You are not protecting anyone...even the ones that you profess to want to protect are hurt by wanting to punish those that say things that you do not like. I simply cannot understand how ANYONE can't see this.

This isn't a poll that attempts to predict the future, crystal balls are shams. . This is a poll on what people believe right here, right now.

I don't think you understand how polls actually work.

It doesn't matter what the majority wants.. the constitution exists to protect us from the Majority.

You post is highly misleading. The poll doesn't say anything about scrapping the First Amendment. Why don't you read it first and then discuss it.

Funny--The article goes on to say, " 80% don’t actually know what the First Amendment really protects. "

It seems to obfuscate the results of the poll. The "methodology" of the poll is questionable as well. While the questions and number of responses are included, it doesn't no state how the survey was done. I can't really dispute the results, and it's a sad day if those results are accurate, but I can't be sure enough of the poll to get all worked up.

Perhaps the answer is quite simple. Simply redefine hate speech to include hatred of, opposition, and resistance to the united states constitution. Then arrest those who voted in favor of scrapping the first amendment for having committed hate speech.

Democracy dies to thunderous applause, showing clearly we have the government we deserve. A pity.

Well, the second amendment makes sure the first amendment isnt going anywhere. They knew what they were doing when they made those the first two amendments.

Those people that answered that they wanted to punish those that express "hate speech" and want to change the 1st Amendment to reflect that IS scrapping the 1st Amendment. Those that admitted that they want to change the 1st Amendment to reflect current cultural beliefs wants scrap what we have now in the 1st Amendment. Just because the questions doesn't explicitly say "scrap" doesn't mean that isn't what it boils down to.

But I've got a feeling you know this and are just being obstinate....for whatever reasoning....

That protection is not unlimited. It has an amendment process which can be used to change it. And while many don't think it can be used against the BoR's section there really is nothing to stop it from being used against it.

The founding fathers never intended any amendment to alter the bill of rights! Which are NOT a list of rights provided by the government. It is a partial list of rights that the government is forbidden to touch.

At the very early stage of inception Ben Franklin had his provisional doubts -- not of the government that was formed, but of the people.

holy cow if that's true people are dumb...... Hate speech??? I could get into all the ways this is dumb but its been covered repeatedly so i won't but i will say everything in life is better when you dont have to depend on others to do something and we need more personal accountability not more government imo

There are many people on this very board who believe Trump should be able to do whatever the **** he wants with no oversight. Hell half of his supporters believe he should be able to overturn the courts. This is the right wings fault.

Trump's oversight is coming November year, that is, the November after next month.

Just one short year and Trump faces the people who oversee him, the voters.
