They don't need to be done by Jan 20. Trump doesn't need to be President to be banned from ever running again.

However, I wonder if it would not be in the GOP's best interest to complete this before Democrats take over the Senate. For instance, McConnell can deny Democrats the right to call Trump to testify. But once he's no longer the Senate Majority Leader.... Or maybe other co-conspirators. I wonder what the likes of Jim Jordan or Devin Nunes or Ted Cruz were doing around that time in their own states.

And finally, to tie Sasse together with one of the seditionist poster boys:

    SNIP
    • GOP Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska called his colleague Sen. Josh Hawley's attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election results "really dumbass" and "a terrible idea" in a Friday interview on NPR.

    • "This was a stunt, it was a terrible, terrible idea, and you don't lie to the American people, and that's been going on," Sasse said.
    ENDSNIP

I think there might be some hair pulling come the next session of the Senate.

    Meow!!

And Lisa Murkowsky, who has even threatened to leave the party if Trump isn't removed.

Politically it might be a good thing for Democrats if he doesn't. If it weren't for the nuclear codes, that is....

I think you should go back and read what I was responding to.

That is debatable (I know that because I heard Lawrence Tribe say it last night), but I think if they START the trial by the 20th, they can finish it. I'm not sure they can start afterwards and the argument will turn to that, instead of Trump.

Removal by the Senate (2/3rds vote) is required to get to the separate vote for permanent disqualification (majority).

Whenever they start, they'll never get 2/3rds, UNLESS some in the GOP do not show up for the vote.... It's not 67, it's 2/3rds of whoever is in the chamber for the vote (again per Tribe)

I don't think 67 votes is out of the question. Not easy, but possible. However, to ban him from running again a simple majority vote is sufficient. Which, I'm pretty sure, many Republicans in the Senate might find appealing.

BTW, what's debatable about impeaching him after he leaves office? It has happened, you know.

    Not to a POTUS...

The goal is not the impeachment or even the removal... it's the ban...

I'm sure they'd get the ban vote now, but I believe you have to get the removal vote to pass first... It's not a choice....
