The canary is dead. We've been in the climate valley for a long time, and now we are at the foothill of looming disaster, a climate hell the likes of which history hasn't seen, and it is about to be unleashed with the full fury and force of mother nature, and she don't give a damn who you are, where you live, 'cause y'all have been a glutton for fossil fuels, and now the proverbial crows are coming home to roost, er. rather ROAST........

...you, or drown your arse, or blow your house down, or suck you up in a massive frickin' tornado or monsoon, 'cuz mother nature is pissed. I'm mean, like, we're talkin' way beyond cosmic PMS.

In 50 years, WTFknows, this earth might not be habitable, maybe sooner than that and the journey there is going to be hell, literally. Could I have done more, you bet, could you have done more, no doubt, could all of us have done more? Sure thing, so let's quit pointing fingers and let's do something about it, IF something can be done about it, and for the deniers who say nothing can be done, get out of the way. And if it is true nothing can be done about it, and our efforts are in err, 'tis better to err on the side of doing something about it, than err on the side of doing nothing about it and then finding out something could have been done about it and we all wind up becoming extinct.

    Is this hysterics?

    I hope so.

We must deal this issue with all our available resources, it is paramount, and the time is NOW.

    Now, I say.

    What say you?

    https://thehill.com/opinion/energy-...gm-un-natural-disasters-in-a-changing-climate

And yeah, I could have posted this in the climate section, but this issue deserves to be put front and center, it is no longer a passing interest relevant only to hobby meteorologists, farmers and fishermen.

    extremeweather.jpg

Climate change has increased the frequency, size, and duration of extreme heat events. In the United States, multi-day heat waves are occurring about three times more often now than they did 50 years ago.

Drought risk is increasing across many parts of the United States, especially the western states, as rising temperatures accelerate evaporation, increase water uptake by heat-parched plants, and reduce the amount of winter snowpack available to refresh regions during dry summer months.

Increasing temperatures, more extreme heatwaves, increasing drought and resulting increasing distress on vegetation allowing for bark beetle and other infestations, are all significant contributors to the increasing size and intensity of and damage from U.S. wildfires.

When it does rain or snow, it is more likely to be a larger event than in the past. A growing percentage of U.S. precipitation now comes in the form of extreme events, with human-caused climate change directly responsible for much of this increase. Basically, heavy rains are getting heavier. Climate-change-related increases in heavy rain intensity and frequency, and the lingering persistence of these weather events over affected areas, have exacerbated flooding across the United States, especially in the Midwest, increasing the number of cities and expanses of land now at high risk.

Evidence continues to mount that human-induced climate change is causing hurricanes to grow stronger and more destructive. Hurricanes are producing heavier rain, their storm surges are riding atop higher sea levels, and, in some cases, they are lingering longer over land, causing increased flooding and infrastructure destruction.

Let’s look at just one of these types of un-natural disasters in more detail: wildfires. In the western U.S., climate change caused more than half the increase in forest fuel aridity (how dry and flammable vegetation is) since the 1970s and has approximately doubled the cumulative area burned in forest fires since 1984. Climate-change-related declines in western spring snowpack, and increased evaporation from higher temperatures, have in the decades since the early 1980s reduced moisture and contributed to a marked increase in the frequency of large fires and the total area burned. Over the last 50 years, there was an eight-fold increase in the annual area burned in summertime forest fires in the west. The evidence indicates that this dramatic increase was caused primarily by unusually dry air linked to climate change. Recent analyses show that intense wildfires can create their own weather — storms that lead to more lightning and more wildfires. These trends are very likely to increase into the future, with science projections suggesting even more dangerous weather conditions for wildfires over the coming decades.

The science tells us that climate change is a very real and an alarming issue that all Americans, and all people around the world, should be concerned about. The findings from the science may be alarming but that doesn’t mean scientists studying this issue are alarmists. Rather, the science tells us there is an urgent need to determine the right responses.

Our temperatures are running slightly below normal and wet in this red midwest state.

In general, when there is an extreme temperature in one zone there is an extreme temperature in the other direction in another zone.

Problem is we've done well reducing emissions but it won't make squat until the REAL polluters get onboard. And I see little more than lip service from them. China and India are on a coal-fired generator building blitz. Of the 25 cities pumping carbon into the atmosphere 23 are in China and eight of the ten rivers dumbing plastics in the oceans are also in China.

IMHO, we don't need to set our hair on fire and run screaming about how we're all going to die. We need to move along in a controlled and logical manner, taking advantage of technology and working to development new technologies.

I miss the good old days when half of North America was covered with a glacier. Things change, accept it.

LOL, you are not even aware the dire prediction don’t even happen this century. You certainly buy into the fear mongering though.

I had Brussels Sprouts for dinner and I'm burping garlic right now. Does that increase climate warming taxes?

Roughly 32 degrees Fahrenheit, so the liberal snowflakes don't melt too fast.

You know, American conservatives will never accept global warming no matter how warm it gets. It is kind of the nature of the beast. Change is resisted. Pollution is not a concern to them. I am quite certain that if we get out of the climate crises it will be by technological means, not by changing minds. Most of the progress that we have made over the years has come in the form of more efficient technology. Furnaces and appliances use much less electricity than they used to, all because of technological developments. Same with improved gas mileage and now electric cars.

    .

I say... the relative short time period humans have been recording weather/climate changes gives us no clue what the long term norms are for the planet.

Pollution is plant food not so much... By the way since windmills and solar don't produce enough power to both cool homes in CA. And charge 14 million car batteries how do you plan on powering 300 million?

It is kind of the difference between a liberal and a conservative. A conservative goes, it's too hard, I can't understand it, we cannot do it. Whereas a liberal goes, with a little research, a few new ideas, I bet I can solve this problem. Has something to do with why most design engineers are liberals.

As long as you solve the problem in a way that doesn't crater the economy, massively raise taxes, or reduce the ability of society to function, knock yourself out. It's a free country.

Right you will break the laws of physics tomorrow. We've had proposals for solar powered vehicles for years none of them have ever proven practical and that's not likely to change anytime soon. Interestingly enough the math says both wind and solar will work better if average temps rise a bit. By the way you want to really change something figure out away to use the thousand of gallons of water that is flowing under the average us city to generate electricity. Note most current power plants generate electricity by boiling water to turn a turbine. Find an economical way to skip the water boiling part of the equation.

We do care about pollution, at least it measurable and quantifiable. What liberals seem to be doing is ignoring the worst polluters on the planet, they being China, India and South America and want us to pick up the slack. If the continent of North America did not exist then there would be zero, repeat, zero positive impact on what the left claims global warming is doing to them planet.

Regarding technological efficiencies, that’s people either wanting to save money on something that uses less fuel, ease of use, or just works better.

It's soooo tiring listening to the totally indoctrinated regurgitate their indoctrination....if, IF mind you, the Earth is entering a planetary climate shift, as the geologic record clearly shows has occurred many times before, THEN-THERE-IS-NO-THING-HUMANS-CAN-DO-EXCEPT-ADAPT-OR-DIE. What comes of lifelong diets of science fiction taken as gospel.

Another way of saying that is you are so tired of listening to the concern of people who accept climate science because you feel weird about Repubs being the only organized group of size on the planet who don't accept it.

The question is, can the country afford it at this time?

Look at how deep the country is in debt, there are lots more homeless people in the streets than there used to be, much of the supposed "middle class" is not in the best shape.

Already the country is spending massive amounts of money that it doesn't have.

Are we going to pay for this with taxes now, rather than borrowing more money to pay for it?
That's a very big question, and I think a lot hinges on it.

Saying "We can't afford not to" is just being emotional and illogical. Let's see some quantitative comparison, some math. We'd have to consider the future increased risk of economic disaster by continued policies of spending on things we can't afford.
