the regulation height of basketball nets be changed to 6 feet to be more fair and inclusive to whites?

I mean seriously, fair is fair!

do you think its fair or should things only be changed to accommodate minorities?

Although I cannot slam dunk, I identify as someone that can, therefore the system must bend to suit ME. If anyone has a problem with it I'm not above lawyering up!

I don't know what time it is for you, but drinking and posting should be done at night, not in the morning.

Now that you have gotten the snark out of your system, answer the question.

Should educational requirements be dumbed down for minorities?

As someone who has to teach and has been teaching for two years? I'm not an expert but here is my opinion.

People say 'dumb down' when they really mean 'change the way it's taught'. Sometimes students need more practice going over certain skills and concepts. Nothing wrong with that and it's the job of the teacher to understand that, and how to incorporate those needs into the classroom. I have had to teach lots of students who don't know what it means to be a college student, and that's very different from me. As I had an entire semester of college done by the time I graduated high school. Is it dumbing down my teaching when I realize not all students are like me? No. It's realizing that I am in a position to help teach some of the skills they need for going ahead. The standards are changing, rarely if ever 'dumbed down'.

no the standards should not change, and i'h not sure this is actually happening.

much more common is the affluent parent who wants her little genius' grades jacked up so he can get into one of the "good schools."

Yes, there is something wrong wiyh needing more time. Especially if the teacher caters to these slowstudents. He is depriving the normal students from learning more advanced concepts.

What doyou think affirmative action means if not lowering requirements for minorities?

No there isn't. Students don't learn at the same rate, and some concepts are harder to understand than others if they don't have the time to develop the necessary skills. Making sure students have opportunities to practice those skills is even more important. You can do both. You can talk about advanced concepts and practice basic skills at the same time. You just have to build off of those skills to get to the advanced concepts.

I can only guess, but I'm assuming you're thinking that Black people are taller than White people? If so - you're wrong, as the Dutch are the tallest on average

On average, Northern Europeans are somewhere around 6 inches taller than your average African. Heck, Northern Europeans, on average are noticeably taller than Southern Europeans. It was one of the things that gave the Vikings, and later the English, such an advantage in raiding and war.

Or are educational standards being restricted to accommodate conservatives. When Bush was governor of Texas they began the testing silliness. In order to make it appear as if Texas students were doing better, they lowered the standards each year, making it appear as if the student were getting smarter. Colorado has one of the better school systems in large part because politicians are constitutionally barred from selecting textbooks and their content. Unlike Texas which has been filling their textbooks with conservative propaganda for decades. And all the other conservative states have been following along. There are reasons that liberals tend to be noticeably more intelligent and knowledgeable than conservatives.

By the way, it takes athleticism to dunk, not racial identity. I am very white, blonde hair, blues eyes and all. In my youth I had no problems dunking basketballs in regulation hoops even though I stand just shy of 5’11”. I was dunking basketballs when I was in tenth grade, when I was even shorter. If you can’t jump, that is your shortcoming.

    1. WHO IS DOING THIS DELIBERTELY. This happens often as result of inner city schools having inferior teachers. They cannot afford to pay really good teachers salaries having to settle for what they can get.

I say teach the same subject to all and give the same tests to all. Some students will need more attention from the teacher to master certain subjects. Others will excel in some subjects, or all subjects. This is normal. Once out of school, any level of schooling, the student will still be learning and in the end water seeks its level. We can't all be doctors and we can't all be laborers, but if we apply ourselves we will do just fine in life. We are all very different in many ways.

You seem like a good teacher trying different methods to help different types of students. I really respect that. I came from another board with a teacher, and she displayed a very frustrating attitude, blaming the students for there own poor progress. She said many other things about her own students and it just didn’t sit tight with me. There seemed to be lack of empathy and concern. It was all blame and finger pointing. I hope the majority of teachers don’t have such negative attitudes.

Teachers come in two broad categories
The first “l know everything and am the font of all wisdom - what I say goes! “
The second “It’s a wide wonderful fascinating world out there - let’s learn about it together”

I can see you are the latter type

I won't lie when I said I was more likely to blame students for their own problems when I first started teaching. It wasn't my fault they didn't do the reading, that kind of stuff. But then I saw them, genuinely struggling with everything that was going on in their lives and I realized I had to change my teaching style to take into consideration their needs. I don't blame anyone who teaches differently than me. It's a different style. But I had to accept the fact that I have to change my teaching to take into consideration their needs.

It is ALWAYS about the journey not the destination! Learning how to learn is waaay more important than what you learn. I mostly teach adults but they have their own challenges including it is never too late to learn!

It is, and I'm happy that I'm still learning. I am happy to say I think my teaching practices paid off when my students had the highest GPA out of the three different sections.

    What do you teach?

It’s nice to hear what you’re saying. When I went to school, it was zero tolerance. It seemed like teachers did everything to get us kicked out of school, because they had a bad attitude towards us. I went to a city school at that point, and it seemed like a waste of time. The teachers treated us like garbage, but my mom got me into a different school system, and I graduated high school, went to college, my sister is in grad school, and we are doing good. It makes a difference when your teachers and the system don’t have extremely low expectations of you and act like it’s best if you’re kicked out as fast as possible.

Not fair -- they are getting around on wheels while others must use their feet.
