Putin demands US assurances on security as Russia completes hypersonic weapons test

Anyone who thinks Russia gives empty threats doesn't know Russia. They consider threats a weakness. When they act, they will act quickly and decisively. More than likely Putin will place similar or worse missiles in areas that will threaten Europe as well as us.

I say the US because he knows the Washington neo cons wouldn't give a damn about what happens to Europe. Besides that, he feels it's not fair to having them blown to bits when they're only satellites of the US and have no say in anything.

 

Russia has a point. NATO is arming "their" side in Ukraine to the teeth. Undoubtingly all kinds of western mercs are being sponsored around there as well. So when the west has a problem when Russia does that too,... potentially having armed to the teeth western Merc at their border when they do not ... it's a flat out massive security threat for them and unacceptable. It's not as if you can trust the West. Trump or some other like him could just as well come to power next, trashing all kinds of promises made etc.

 

The US never apologized for shooting down a commercial aircraft from Iran, while the meme went around "I will never apologize for the United States—I don't care what the facts are ... I'm not an apologize-for-America kind of guy".
A plane shot down in the airspace of Italy, 1980, is still not resolved in who shot it down and who needs to pay up.
Ukraine shot down a plane in 2001, they paid up, but still claim they didn't shoot the plane down.

Putin cannot be trusted. He is complaining about NATO and the US threatening his borders. He knows perfectly well that is absolute nonsense. The only reason that NATO countries and the USA have been improving defenses is because Putin is posturing openly and attacking thru a thin veneer of Russian mercenaries and operatives.

Putin demanding assurances of non-belligerence from everyone he is either attacking or posturing to attack is a ploy. The value of the ploy is internal propaganda being manufactured for the Russian people.

Does Putin want a war with NATO? Very doubtful.

But would Putin play a game where he gains territory or influence by all these activities? Even if some low intensity warfare and deaths of innocents is caused by it?

Oh hell yes!

 

Putin is not in a position of strength. Geopolitically he is not going to win this fight and he knows it.

Absolutely. And don't forget the Pan Am 103 shot down for 'intruding' into Soviety claimed
territory. Some, like the Ukraine and the Iranian one can be considered accidents in war
zones - no-one wants to kill civilian passengers, and the political fallout can be very bad.
But the Pan Am one just has to take your breath away for sheer calculated murder.

Yeah well. The US was anti-Gadaffi. And with that, they were accused by Libya of arming terrorist in Libya and highly probably did that. The US was also condemned by the world for attempting to murder Gadhafi / attack of Libya and that it was a breach of international law. The US ended up paying for that. As for Lockerby, that debt was mostly paid by American companies who wanted to operate in Libya after the US lifted a ban. The Lockerby trial was also a bit of a kangaroo court. Evidence was withheld for the defense, while the defense on the appeal was appointed by the court. They released the guy convicted before the appeal started, due to his bad health... which should have been no more than 3 months, but he lived for years and years. So it all stinks, and the victims of Lockerby know it too.
