For starters, the course catalog, it says "Advanced methods of analyzing literature and culture are taught through a set of focused readings of theories, histories, perspectives, and/or major figures in LGBTQ, women¿s and/or gender studies. Readings may include Audre Lorde, Sarah Ahmed, Gloria Anzaldua, and Kimberle Crenshaw." Second, not all Naval Academy cadets are going to take this class to begin with. That would depend on which major they choose. Most choose general studies or engineering or something similar to advance their career in the US navy or Marine Corps. Finally, there is no general studies major. This class is an elective within the English Department. More than likely, a person who takes this class may be an English Major or a History major and chosen as an elective. So thus, only a few will take this if they choose to.

And THIS is why I so strongly advocate placing webcams in every classroom, that are accessable at any time by parents, administrators, certain politicians, and the like, but not just anyone... The point is teacher accountability, and for them to know that at any given time, they may be unwatched, or they may have 110 viewers, but since part of the plan is disabling any light(s) on the cam that indicate when it is being used. Of course, every minute of every class of every year ought be kept for some defined period of time... Say 3 years or so, though I am not at all married to that number I just plucked out of my posterior.

Naturally, teachers scream like stuck pigs when this idea comes up precisely because they DON'T want to be actively supervised without advance or even realtime knowledge of that happening. Lefties, naturally, also scream like stuck pigs with that suggestion because they know good and damn well what is being taught in many to most classrooms in 2023 (and for years if not a decade or two, earlier years as well), they know that graduating a bunch of high schoolers that go to colleges where the curriculum is controlled even more completely by the left, so you get mobs of people trying to kick speakers they don't like off their campus with a combination of obnoxiousness and violence, and simply will not allow any dissenting opinion from anyone. And that is their goal, which must come to an end, even if that means an end to public education as we know it.

 

To the extent they might be using the propaganda battle, it is directly because of the American, and to a lesser extent, European Leftist movements. Anti-USA all the way, baby, isn't that how it goes? SO, You HAVE to oppose Israel. When the time comes, you WILL support China over Taiwan. But, the reality is that anyone with an IQ north of a fish doesn't have to have it explained to them.

What they need to be taught is if they want these things, they're gonna have to hoof it, early and often. Show up early... Leave late... Ask for help with education expenses. Work two jobs. Or three. MOST IMPORTANT: Graduate high school. No kids until you're married, no marriage until established in a career. Have all the sex you want with whomever you want, above age of course, but keep it safe. Don't get arrested. Don't get tattoos all over your face, neck, and hands. Do everything possible to save your marriage, if it becomes necessary, but even if that doesn't work, the kid's father absolutely must be a big part of their lives.

Follow the above rules at LEAST until age 25, after then you may consider an advanced degree, a new job, or starting your own business, and no matter what, unless the whole world comes to an end, you will do fine. You control your own destiny.

Now, don't you think the above is better than, "You'll never amount to nuttin, as soon as you turn 18, go apply at these agencies for a lot of free stuff paid for by the people holding you down, and become one with Judge Judy reruns."

I have been saying this for a long time now, as a liberal liberal. These people are the opposite of liberal. They are authoritarian, racist, sexist, and oppose actual diversity. They are the opposite of what they purport to be. And more liberals need to wake up to this and take back the left.

 

I don't think "facts" should be the most important thing from school, but some are going to be needed as material for learning how to acquire and use knowledge.

Indoctrination in schools has always been a thing. Back in the 1950s, it was more about trying to get them to be patriotic Americans by sugarcoating American history, and then teaching them to hate socialists. Since then, there have been more internal divisions, and so the indoctrination has become more controversial. The adults also get indoctrinated by media corporations who represent various interests, most notably Fox News. I think schools should make an effort to acknowledge when a fact is contested or controversial, but there are real facts out there and it's not indoctrination just because it happens to be one you've been indoctrinated not to believe.

 

Which facts are presented can be heavily biased. For example, very few in the US are made aware of Zionist terrorism against the British and Palestinians leading up to Israel becoming an officially Jewish state. Presentation of such facts, or the omission of them, is always going to be seen as bias.

 

Fantastic post. I'm old and retired now and I have watched American college education go from engineering/law/medicine. teaching and such to "liberal arts"... then get downright silly with degrees in "Women's Studies" and similar. Now college is becoming a joke and our once vaunted American technology is sinking fast.
It's even happening at my beloved West Point which, by the way, was established as the first engineering college in the United States. Now, time that could be spent studying Thermodynamics and Electromechanical Field Theory is spent visiting key locations of the "Freedom Road" (at your expense BTW). How that helps America close with and destroy our enemies with fire and maneuver, commonly referred to as "winning wars"... is beyond me.

It's pretty simple. You can take courses which help conceive, design and build things that can make money for a potential employer and end up prosperous with a paid for home, money for the kids, and a happy retirement... or you can seek "fulfillment" and end up penniless strumming a guitar, shoeless, under a tree. It's not rocket science.

It gets so silly now that the folks running such "has been" yet still somehow respected places like Harvard are no longer educators, but radical political activists.

 

Ham-ass and to a lesser but large extent, islam itself are where you will find the "problem".

My advice is about personal responsibility, individual rights, work ethic, and not being a burden on society. I disagree that it will lead to a low-wage job, but even if that's all someone is capable of, better them working that low-wage job (or 2, or 3) and buying food, paying rent, and all of life's other expenses using money they earned, not random strangers!

 

FACTS are what education is all about. Do want to fly in an aircraft designed by an "engineer" that thought mathematics was a philosophy? Do you want your doctor cutting on you after graduating with a Medical degree in "attitudinal surgery"?

 

The only way to understand the world you live in is to look at, and process, empirical data, aka facts.

Maybe you don't understand what "fact" means. I'm not talking about established universal truth. A father's anger at his son in certain circumstances is a fact. A girl's penchant for dolls is a fact. A car parked in front of a house is a fact. The behavior of the electron in a hydrogen atom is a fact. Nobody can acquire and use knowledge without looking at, and learning, facts. Facts are, or should be, the only solid premise we can build on to acquire and use knowledge. False information presented as facts is a false premise, and what we build on it can only be destructive. Teaching children how to differentiate between facts and fiction, between a solid premise and a false premise, is paramount.

 

Well...the process of choosing which facts to present is certainly biased, but the facts themselves are not. The problem is that we often believe something to be a fact when it's only a belief (the existence of gods, for instance). There are several such beliefs presented as facts in your post. Amazing how anti-Zionists manage to pack so many falsehoods in one sentence.
