In that case the OP is intended to prove you wrong. Not liberals. WE agree that cops should have guns.

That is totally absurd. In the real world that most of us live in, the bad guys are always going to have guns. I am not ready to give up my method of self defense,

Yeah! If this was America 6 people wouldn't have died. 60 would have, and that attacker would have had a gun instead of a knife. Great thread.

There already has been a thread on this and your title is misleading. He was also tackled by several bystanders and the main response here in Aus was
THANK GOODNESS HE DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A HIGH POWERED RAPID FIRE WEAPON
See WE have not been sucked into a myth of believing the crap about “a good guy with a gun”. Yes it was a woman (and I bet that sticks in the craw of some) who was a trained police officer who was on scene within minutes. Why the rapid response? Because our cops are not overwhelmed by having to deal with daily shootings.

You couldn’t pay us to go back to pre 1996 if you tried - and the NRA has tried and WE have it on tape!

Then why did he only have a knife? Why is our murder rate so much lower than yours? What you lot don’t realise is that there was a second incident, a terrorist attack in Sydney just a couple of days ago. A 16 year old stabbed a priest with a knife, he was tackled to the floor by the parishioners and there is video of one of the people pinning him down saying “You do this during prayer” then he hits him on the back of the head!

They try here in Canada too, and we have the same response.

Similar on universal health care. We are constantly held up by scare mongers in the US trying to stop universal health care from coming to the US. Look how horrible it is in Canada, etc. Yet, we would never go back to a system like theirs. It really should tell them something.

We have to start from where we are, not from where we would like to be. In our world, the bad guys have guns. Convince them to give theirs up before asking the good guys to give theirs up.

Yes that is the thing more guns = more criminals with guns and this is the point that is difficult for some to debate - if defensive gun use had an impact on crime rate why isn’t Australia swimming in dead people shot by criminals

Yes, we saw a movie where that sort of society existed-it was called Schindler's List. I love this display of how the anti gun left thinks.

completely debunked by what has happened in the USA over the last30 years

and just stop with pretending that public safety is what motivates the anti gun left

are you pretending you haven't seen the citations how violent crime has gone down over the last 30 years and the number of guns has gone up?

Again - is gun ownership the only factor affecting crime stats? Now since we are talking about an incident in Aus - why didn’t our crime rate rise post 1996? Why hasn’t the UK’s crime rate risen?

This would be an argument against people saying police should be unarmed... whoever is saying that....

Like I said we have to start from where we are. There are over 430 million guns out there. There is no way law enforcement is going to be able to gather them up and only the law abiding will willingly turn them in which leaves the law abiding defenseless. Australia never had that many guns or that many guns per capita.

The situation in Australia was never the same as the US. It is useless to try to compare them.

So you DON’T try. But it wasn’t the buy back of guns that made the difference because there are still a lot of illegal guns out there - it was the legislation requiring stolen guns to be reported as soon as known, a large way for criminals to access guns closed. But most importantly it is legislated that guns MUST be locked in a secure safe between uses - even whilst being transported by public road. There is good, solid research showing locking up guns reduces gun violence. You can have your guns and reduce gun crime - win/win
