We are heavily taxed to support school districts and this is what we have come to = http://www.stltoday.com/news/national/article_0f7b420e-b909-5d11-8bf2-23602b026f72.html This is amazing considering that since 1972 they have actually dumbed the SAT test series down TWICE so that more people could "pass".

Thank you to the always liberal teachers unions, thank you to the liberal school boards, thank you to an American population that encourages this kind of crap in our schools with your indifference and indulgence for political correctness.

Not only can students not read, they don't comprehend and they fail at math, too. And if you read anything these poor ignorant kids write, you know right away that they have had rotten "educations". But, sure, let's blow even more money on this kind of "education", and then wonder why we fall farther behind other countries in the world.

I'm sure the tyranny of the Lib-Baggers rejoice on this kind of news, dumbing down enough people as to make their pathetic claims seem reasonable.

Not a big deal, it's the fault of the SAT tests not testing things like Gay History, Sexual perversions and Ethnic studies. If they fix the tests to reflect our curriculum, kids might do better.

The students taking the SATS in the past few years would be juniors in Highschool or at least 16 years old.

Testing the young scholar's memory skills by having them recite rap lyrics verbatim would be a good test of their progress also.

Heck yeah, the real world applications aren't reflected on these tests. Instead they waste time with things like Math...pffft...

Funny, my public education here in Ontario with one of the strongest and most well managed teachers unions gave me and millions of other Canadians a chance to succeed. Are they issues here with our public education? Yes, is it because teachers here are a bunch of evil socialist unionized teachers that hate kids?

    No.

If you fund the program properly, which will give teachers a chance to succeed and instruct children they will do so.

...I think the difference is the US is run by women and women just can't live with their child failing...so if the child can't meet the standards, then the standards must be lowered...simple reverse Darwinism...

What has Finland got that we haven't got? Maybe a higher societal ethic; a lack of apathy from their students?

I would like to add a couple of thanks.

Thank you parents for not giving a (*)(*)(*)(*) enough about your kids to become involved in their education. It seems that the right wing expected teachers to raise your kids for you, and when they failed the excuse you from responsibility.

Thank you students for sitting on your fat asses trying to figure out how to erase the search history on your dad's computer rather than doing your homework.

Thank you Santa for bringing these kids $500 worth of video games and then allowing them to play them for 5 hours a day.

Thank you America for promoting the greedy capitalist pig over the well educated scientist or engineer. Once education was cherished. Now every kid thinks they will be a mogul if they get on a reality show.

A later start to structured education and a strong focus on vocational options.

Less of an aggressivly binary political system probably helps too.

    Really?

I always love how folks blame the other side for everything that ails the country. Personally, i find it a bit disingenuous and refuse to summarily dismiss the republicans, but I do so very much wish I could find one entity, one thing, one party, to blame all of my own failures on, thereby absolving myself from any responsibility for my position in life.

Don't blame teachers for OUR societies failure to raise our children properly. It is not the job of a teacher, union or otherwise, to install educational value into children, parents have to do that. And if they don't, no matter what teacher does the child will not learn because they have no motivation to learn. Your point is over simplified and stupid......think before placeing fingers to keys

It is the teacher's job to teach children how to read, write, do math, think, and be able to apply what they have learned. Teachers in general are failing to do this since children are graduating who cannot even write a literate sentence. Before public education, it was the parents' job to teach the three Rs and more, and with public education, it has become the teacher's job.

"Compassionate, intellectual" liberals throw mountains of other peoples money at "education" (unions)....

while simultaneously rewarding and expanding irresponsible/bad behavior and social decay with on demand social "safety nets", lax immigration policy, and meritless, outcome based "equality"....

then, sheepishly look around for others to blame for the sorry, debt saddled, government dependent state we find ourselves ....

while asserting even more money for "education" (unions) is the "solution".

Drop has nothing to do with how well the teachers are doing the job. Another FAIL from all the teacher haters here.

    From NJ

Gee! Way to pay back the teachers for doing such a good job, Christie!

    That's a good idea...take heed.

The reason teachers don't teach, the reason parents don't parent is at least 2 decades of PC progressive liberalism. If it was just one or the other the students might survive, when it's whole generations we ain't got a prayer.

Canada is not America no matter how much they might want to be.

This is a debate about the lousy academic achievement of kids in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Maybe every Canadian can at least read and write when they leave school but that isn't the case in America.

And we think the greedy, selfish and incompetent public teachers here are part of the reason.
