Steven Seagal to protect U.S-Mexico border

Steven Seagal has once again been hired to serve and protect, except it doesn't sound like there will be any reality show cameras following him around this time.

The "Above the Law" actor was sworn in this week as a deputy with the sheriff's office in Hudspeth County, Texas. The 59-year-old, who's no stranger to law enforcement and is also trained in Aikido, will help control the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the San Antonio Express.

The paper reports that Seagal reached out to the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office himself about two months ago, seeking employment. Says Sheriff Arvin West, "Seagal is not in this for celebrity or publicity. He's like the rest of us that live down here; he has a sincere passion for his country and he wants to do more to help."

Although cameras captured Seagal's work as a reserve deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana for A&E's "Steven Seagal: Lawman," it doesn't appear his full-time work with Hudspeth County's department will eventually serve as fodder for TV.

The San Antonio Express reports that a spokesman for the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office says Seagal's employment with them isn't part of the A&E show. (Production was also halted on "Steven Seagal: Lawman" in 2010 when a former model alleged that Seagal used her as a "sex toy" after she was hired to be his assistant.)

"The television aspect of what we're doing here is the last priority," the spokesman said. "The man has a pure motive in doing this. He knows what we're up against and wants to help."

Seagal is scheduled to start his new gig early next year. While it's unknown if he'll be paid, the spokesman for the sheriff's department says deputies are typically paid about $15 an hour.

Well now that the border is no longer UNDER SIEGE, I'm thinking that there is going to a FIRE DOWN BELOW the border, with Seagal unleashing some URBAN JUSTICE on those drug cartels. I imagine this worry over the border is HALF PAST DEAD as we all know that Seagal is HARD TO KILL.

Every day is 'Day of the Dead' in Mexico drug war
Sunday, October 30, 2011 Nearly two decades after I had left Mexico, I arrived back on Day of the Dead, a colorfully macabre celebration harkening back to the Aztecs but observed on the Catholic All Saints' Day.

El Dia de Los Muertos is when families take picnics to the cemeteries and decorate the graves of departed relatives with marigolds, candles and sugar skulls. The Nov. 2 holiday has always been one of my favorites, I told a friend who met me at the Mexico City airport last year. "Every day is Day of the Dead now," he said flatly. "We have 40,000 days of the dead." He was referring to the number of people who have died in drug violence since President Felipe Calderon took office and launched an offensive against trafficking cartels. Navigating through a more modern and prosperous capital than the one I had left in 1993, he spoke of a country that had made many advances, but that also had become a miasma of savagery. More families were visiting more graves.

The Mexico I left was still governed by the aptly named Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which held onto power for nearly 70 years through a mix of pork barrel politics and vote rigging. Political rhetoric tended toward anti-American. The North American Free Trade Agreement had not been signed yet, so foreign-owned businesses were scarce and imports expensive. With the Internet still in its infancy, most Mexicans got their news from government-subsidized media that focused on presidential activities and public works. There were cartels back then, moving South American cocaine and Mexican marijuana north to feed a voracious U.S. appetite for illegal drugs. And, to be sure, there was violence in the 1990s. The archbishop of Guadalajara was assassinated by drug lords in what was deemed to be "a mistake," and the head of PRI, Luis Donaldo Colossio, was murdered, a case never quite clarified. Armed Zapatista guerrillas sprang out of the jungles of Chiapas to demand that poor and indigenous Mexicans receive their fair share of Mexico's wealth. Yet Mexico was not thought to be particularly violent then. There was no running tally of the dead.

Today, I find the country greatly changed, if sometimes seeming to come full circle. Fair elections brought Calderon's National Action Party to power a decade ago, but now Mexicans appear ready to return the PRI to office. Polls give a stunning double-digit lead to the PRI's presumed candidate, Enrique Pena Nieto, the former governor of the state of Mexico who has yet to define his presidential agenda, particularly regarding drug violence. Like the Aztecs and Spaniards, modern Mexicans have built on the ruins of past generations. Old low-rises along the capital's Paseo de la Reforma have been leveled. The Mexican Stock Exchange, which once stood out of the boulevard like a lone saguaro cactus in the desert, now sits in the shadow of international banks-hotels-office towers. Starbucks cafes on nearly every other block serve as billboards for the globalization of Mexico, while the Mexicanization of Starbucks is evident in the barristas' offer of sugar-coated Pan de Muerto Bread for the Dead.

Mexican politicians can be openly pro-American at times, and Mexico is truly multinational now, with everything from Costco megastores to Ferrari dealerships. Speckled enamel dishware traditionally used by the poor no longer comes from local factories but from China. Mexico, meanwhile, exports far more manufactured goods than oil, which is the reverse of 20 years ago and a sign of a more developed economy. Free trade in foodstuffs has driven more farmers off the land and into the cities, where there is a noticeably larger middle class, but also more of the so-called "ninis," or "neither nors." They are the youth who neither study nor find legitimate jobs, and may seek work or be pressed into service by drug cartels.

Drug vendetta link in 26 bodies dumped in Guadalajara
November 25, 2011 : THE bodies of 26 young men dumped in three vehicles near a busy intersection in Guadalajara yesterday, bear signs of a drug vendetta and a chilling message of more to come in Mexico's second city.

The macabre discovery came just ahead of a major international book fair in the western city and a day after 17 charred bodies were found in two vehicles in the city of Culiacan, in Sinaloa state, further north on the Pacific coast. A message found with the latest bodies said the peace enjoyed by the states of Jalisco and Sinaloa, allegedly as a result of agreements between local authorities and the Sinaloa cartel, was over. "There were 26 corpses altogether, all male and aged from 25 to 35 years," Fernando Guzman, a top official in Jalisco state, of which Guadalajara is capital, told a news conference Thursday afternoon. Most of the men had been asphyxiated, some were naked and some marked with the words "Milenio" and "Zetas" - the names of drug gangs - in oil, Guzman said. The Zetas - set up by ex-army officers turned hitmen in the 1990s - are blamed for extortion, kidnappings and murders in ever-increasing areas of Mexico.

The Milenio gang is known to operate in the region and media reports recently suggested it had joined forces with the Zetas. "The Zetas are present in the north of Jalisco and they could have aligned with the Milenio gang ... to fight for the plaza (drug trafficking area) of Guadalajara," said Dante Haro, an investigator at the University of Guadalajara. Jalisco state, known as a stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel of fugitive billionaire drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has seen drug violence increase in recent months, including shootouts and roadblocks early in the year. Governor Emilio Gonzalez said on his Twitter account he was "outraged" by the discovery of the bodies and called for a probe.

The spectacular act of dumping bodies on a busy highway echoed another in September in which 35 bodies were tipped out of trucks under a busy overpass in the eastern port of Veracruz, on the Gulf of Mexico. "It looks like a copy of what happened in Veracruz," said Jose Reveles, author of several books on drug trafficking. But he said it was necessary to wait for the results of an inquiry. Authorities blamed the Veracruz killings on the New Generation drug gang, which has suspected ties to the Sinaloa gang and also calls itself the Zeta Killers. The vehicles found yesterday lay close to the city's convention centre, which will host the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the most important event of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world, starting this weekend. Scores of authors, including Nobel laureates Mario Vargas Llosa and Herta Muller, were expected to attend. Locals said that federal security forces deployed to secure the recent Pan American Games in the city had only left on Wednesday.

A survey released this week found few Mexicans believe the government can defeat drug cartels as its military crackdown on organized crime enters its sixth year. The poll, by the Mitofsky agency, showed 14 per cent believed President Felipe Calderon's strategy was succeeding, compared to 23 per cent in a poll in March 2010. The latest poll, of 1000 people interviewed in October, showed 44 per cent thought the situation would not improve during Calderon's last year in office, which ends in December 2012. Some 45,000 deaths have been blamed on rising drug violence since the start of the crackdown.
