Police say the robbery and assault of a 78-year-old Toledo man by six juveniles were not racially motivated and his account of what happened might have been exaggerated.

On Thursday, Toledo police Capt. Wes Bombrys said investigators determined the crime involving Dallas Watts was not racially motivated. On Friday, police Sgt. Phil Toney agreed, adding, "After the investigation, it was revealed that the story told by Mr. Watts was somewhat exaggerated, although he was assaulted and robbed. His story as to how everything happened appears to be a little bit exaggerated.

Mr. Watts did not go to the hospital after the alleged assault, Sergeant Toney said.

Like it or not, hearing about these things simply makes people a little more weary around groups of young black people. Follow that road, it plants little seeds of doubt, worry, and ultimately prejudice. Having nobody but internet posters bring forth these crimes isn't going to help the black community. Instead they will fester into worse things that harm the black community. If you want to change opinions then black leaders need to be screaming for it to stop, we will hear that, and actually believe someone cares, so far it seems nobody does, almost like it ok...

It's very disappointing that his forum encourages racists to post here. It shows how degraded political discourse has become in the wake of the rightwing media.

Its not about racebaiting, if the news doesn't report it the local community still hears about it, and that will be what plants the seeds of doubt, the worry, and the prejudice... It helps nobody for this not to be ended by a very vocal response from people who could make a stance.

Well, but this isn't a news site, Dispondent. It is appropriate for the news to report accurately. This site is for us to take a (*)(*)(*)(*) at the news. Totally different.

Look, people should always stand up against hatred and ignorance, but...who takes the stand, how they take it, and why they are making a stand are all equally important, or else it feels false. That is true of every argument, not just this one.

 

Then we need to ask ourselves, is this happening? Are groups of 'young people', regardless of who they are racially, attacking innocent people? If that's the case, it needs to stop. If its happening across the nation, as it appears to be, then we all KNOW who SHOULD make the stand, and could have a real effect... If all the leaders remain silent, this will end badly for a bunch of 'young people' who test themselves against the wrong person, likely with an assault rifle... I'm sure we'd hear about that!

My friend, this isn't about who, its about what is happening, we should not, and cannot allow it as a society. The ramifications will run deep, likely for decades or more for anyone that experiences it directly or indirectly (such as family members or friends). That is where the lasting harm will be, decades of doubts, prejudice, and in some cases hatred. We certainly don't need any more of that...

 

Only Nixon can go to China and only a liberal black president can take a stand on any issue touching upon race.
