Various Founding Fathers of America noted that we are more likely to lose our freedoms from internal threats rather than Foreign invasions. In addition to the glut of individuals & organizations (the Al Sharptons, ADL etc) who find it quite profitable pandering to the "Chronically Offended", the following is additional chilling evidence that they were right: “Americans think fighting racism is more important than free speech – poll” https://www.rt.com/usa/328129-racism-free-speech-campus/ EXCERPTS “A plurality of Americans are in favor of universities curtailing the free speech rights of students, according to a new poll. At the same time, most Americans are against the creation of diversity offices at colleges. A HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted in December and released Monday surveyed 1,000 American adults about their attitudes towards the restriction of free speech and promotion of diversity on campus. This comes at a time of racial unrest at universities across the country and subsequent crackdowns on free expression by school administrations. Forty-three percent of respondents said that making sure that students have an environment “free from discrimination, even if that means placing some limits on what students can say,” is a priority, while 38 percent of those polled thought that students should have an “absolute right” to free speech.”CONTINUED - - - - - - Any Thoughts?
I understand where they're coming from. It makes peoples' lives a living hell when they're being forced into certain socioeconomic circles because of some ridiculous social construct. History tells us that racism is an oppresive force. We can look at the treatment of Aboriginals in Australia, the Africans in South Africa, the Palenstinians in Palenstine, the Indigenous in Asia and elsewhere, the Africans in this America, and see the trauma racism brings over and over, unrelenting. Beyond that, there are successive generations that buy into racial arguments, thus ever cementing an ugly social order. Free speech for criticizing the government is alright, but free speech to make any demographic's life a living hell deserves all the push back it can get. Just my 2.
So you're in favor of free speech as long as it's speech you agree with? I'm gonna go out on a long limb here and say you tend to vote Democrat.
We need to remember that the First Amendment says that the GOVERNMENT cannot prohibit Free Speech, private companies and individuals can. However, if a university or corporation is getting government money, then I say that they have to follow the same rules. Now I personally believe that the freer the speech, the freer the society, even if it allows hate speech. The moment we give an excuse why certain speech can be oppressed, no matter how honorable of intentions, it weakens our rights because it will be abused by those who wish to stifle the speech of the oppressed.
