A Statement like this from the Mayor-Elect sends the wrong message:

Apparently it was a POS, Fox article. But the point of supplying a thread link, is to inform readers about the story, which is the link's subject. So I'm sorry to say that I disagree with your feeling that it is my responsibility, beyond reading the linked article-- which I'll note that oftentimes, other posters, including yourself, seem often to not even do-- to "do some homework." I comment on many stories here; I cannot independently research each one, with the assumption that the linked article does not come close to depicting the real story.

Well, if he doesn’t want to demonize people who destroy property and attack people, I’ll take a swing.

You clearly didnt read the linked article, as it mentions the two shot right in it. "Police say a 6-year-old boy was shot in the arm near the Chicago Loop and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Northwestern Hospital and listed in fair condition, according to a report from WLS."

Maybe read the article next time??

What you post, was NOT part of the article. If my post had not been too long for you to read ("TLDR"), you would know, that I went through the entire article, in my last reply.

Maybe read the reply, next time??

WRONG ARTICLE. You are NOT showing the link from the OP, unless for some reason, that link brings us each to a different site. Here is what I see, at that link:

    Screenshot_20230417-125835.png

Nothing about a 6 year old boy, being shot. It says, "Hundreds of Chicago teens caused chaos..."

Link from OP does have the following paragraph(paragraph 8, I believe):

Police say a 6-year-old boy was shot in the arm near the Chicago Loop and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Northwestern Hospital and listed in fair condition, according to a report from WLS.

Not sure why you are not seeing it, but it’s there.

Oh, so now you are limiting the data to just what was in the article. If that's the case, the article clearly says that the kids were terrorizing people. So why did you call me out for asking for them to be treated as terrorists? Isn't that what you should do with people that terrorize?

    So, they are victims?

Nothing will ever change nor improve if the ones perpetuating these types of acts are victims.

    Yes?

digging into possible reasons, doesn't excuse the actions

and you asked for possible reasons

I can come up with reasons some acted the way they did on Jan 6th, doesn't justify the actions some took on Jan 6th

I think very little is a simple binary question of victim vs offender. Most criminals will have be victims in one way or another that contributed to leading them to crime. That isn't to say it is inevitable or that they can't and shouldn't have worked to avoid that outcome, but that is not always easy so if we as a wider society can reduce and mitigate the victimisation of people in general, one of the benefits should be a reduction in future crime. It's really a question of whether you really want to address and resolve the root problems or if you just want to find something or someone to blame.

    Interesting attempt at dismissal.

Is a riot considered organized crime?

There is always blame in criminal activity.

What you are essentially saying is "but they had it rough" which I perceive to be excusing their actions or at a minimum blaming others for their actions.

So let's peel back a layer.

Who is responsible for these teens:

    - Feeling like they're constantly presented in media and culture as a fundamentally flawed generation destined to failure.
    - A general sense of apathy and pessimism for a future they will have to live in and a perceived lack of concern from those of us old enough that we won't.
    - A lack of support and consideration for their role in society, and thus limited suitable availability for entertainment and recreation.
    - Seeing powerful adults justifying disruption, damage and violence as valid ways to get what you want.
    - Frustration and resentment from perceptions of large and growing economic disparities and wealth gaps.
    - Ever increasing difficulties for parents, teachers etc. in the face of pretty much constant criticism and conflicting demands from all directions.

Everybody is a victim. Some societal boogeyman was created to alleviate the teens responsibility, the parents responsibility.... how is everybody a victim against some false boogeyman?

There generally is always blame related to criminal acts and the consequences of them and I'm not seeking to excuse anyone or minimise any personal responsibility any of the people directly involved in this incident or any other like it.

You initial question to me wasn't about "Who is to blame?" but "What are the causes?", and the causes aren't all going to be down to direct conscious actions or wilfully targeted policies. Often there will be all sorts of unintended consequences or side-effects to innocent or well-meaning things and even elements of luck or coincidence, where an entirely different outcome (better or worse) could have happened on the metaphorical flip of a coin. If we want to seek to reduce this kind of crime (and more importantly, the damage and harm it does to all concerned), simply applying direct blame after the fact isn't going to do much help on it's own. We need to understand the whole sequence of actions, events and environments that got us all to where we are so we can see if there any of those we could change to reduce the risks in the future.

Note that I wasn't saying any or all of the things I listed were definitely factors in this incident. They were examples of the kind of factors that could have contributed to some extent but it'd take much deeper investigation and study to fully understand. The problem is that few are willing to invest that kind of time, effort and money when simply tossing out blame at the first thing it sticks to and moving on will make more profit and win more votes (at least in the short term).

Most of the things I listed are general social and cultural factors so would be very difficult to address, especially for individuals acting alone, which is all the more reason it is the kind of approach society, through elected representatives and other people of power and influence, should be looking in to. There could well be easy wins that would bring some improvement or some things that would require greater effort and investment but have the potential for great benefits. We'll never know unless we ask.

They should vigorously pursue all that participated and file every charge they can against these youth. They are the threat that is greater than nearly all others in this nation. Happened in California too.

I agree the democratic government in Chicago for decades has absolutely made thousands of victims. The trend is very clear, wacko city leadership has ruined the city.

I appreciate the honest conversation Joe.

I also agree with most of what you are saying. I think where we disagree is that WE have a responsibility to fix this. I'm not sure how we are capable either by involvement or through laws to overcome the societal net affects of a broken household, fathers out of the home, lack of raising these kids essentially.

    How do you fix that?

That's only half of the equation. You also have to fix the mindset of millions of whites who habitually demonize blacks, with tragic and predictable consequences.

All my years, it's the Blacks that are responsible for their own reputations! They want to glamorize the thug life, then expect to be seen as thugs..

Oh ok and you also have to change the mindset's of blacks that habitually turn to crime to get a head. See how that works when you try to inject racial BS. Statistics are real and unfortunately when it comes to black crime it's substantial. Democrats run the big cities and have for years and its getting much worse for those in that demographic. At some point, you going to have to come up with something better than mean ole whitey or corporations that are providing goods in those areas. Right now, those stores are running, and this will make life even more miserable. Biden's inflation has hurt the poor and blacks more than anyone, congrats on celebrating those policies and cementing a more miserable life for the inner cities.

    I disagree.

My two daughters are black. They were in DCFS when we started to foster them and living in Chicago's south side.

Based on their lack of raising and behavior way back then, I am nearly certain they would have been wrapped up in bad decisions circumstances and participating in these types of activities that bring down society. They came to us behind in school, talking about having babies in high school, and failing to understand or respect authority.
    These are all learned behaviors.

Now, one is on track to play college softball, the other loves baking and show choir and both are straight A students.

Are they perfect? Absolutely not. I could strangle my oldest at times, but having a structured, disciplined, and committed/ involved household is imperative.

In my humble opinion, early pregnancy and too many kids, lack of a involved father figure, lack of priority of education and morality, and lack of respect for authority is a PRIMARY reason people of all races struggle generationally and create these societal issues.

My kids live in a 98% white community, and just based on sheer numbers have been absolutely subjected to some racist *****. My wife is Asian. I understand racial issues. Nobody is allowed to use those as an excuse in this house, and all of us are finding success.
