Those people are not Turks but Pomaki (Thracian natives) . To answer litwin's question in as fewer words as possible : Ottomans had the millet system where each church was responsible for the well being and behaviour of their flock , the orthodox church acted like tax collector for the local kaimakam and had the power to make requests , what they usually ask was to exterminate catholics and indeed catholics were exterminated or forced to move . The Ottomans themselves didn't care who paid the taxes .

Pomaks are the ancient tribe of Agrianoi , native Thracians of muslim religion and Bulgarian language . From what i know all Turkish muslims left Bulgaria for Turkey inside the 90's , Pomaks did not move because they would still be a minority in Turkey and Turkey record on minorities sucks. Catholics were a) too few b) lived in areas controlled by Venice and Genoa , when those republics sent missionaries those areas revolted and asked the sultan for protection . Why you think Italians were kicked out of every little Greek island? Ottomans were not interested about rocks .. heck they even left Montenegro alone because there was no gain conquering a mountain yet even Genoan trade posts on rocks were destroyed. DNA? heh this is the Balkans and everyone is mixed with everyone . Muslim minorities in Rodopi consist of Pomaks , Turks and Gypsies , in Bulgaria there may be some Gagauz too. Ottos did not care who paid the taxes it was the Orthodox church that demanded the ousting of the Catholics .
