American politicians lied to us. They gave us an enemy we could see. They drew our attention to that enemy. While we focussed on Iraq and Afghanistan, the politicians proceeded to take more freedoms from the people and allowed their corporate sponsors to grab an even greater proportion of America's wealth. I completely fail to understand this part of the first sentence. Therefore I cannot reply to it. It wasn't the West's response to Islam. It was the West's response to Saddam Hussein. Hussein threatened the profits of the oil companies when he invaded Kuwait. When the West took the oilfields back, Hussein refused to comply with the terms of the peace agreement: that is to say he refused to take his punishment. I beg to differ. Japan and Germany declared war on the US in WWII, not the other way around. The Russians were the ones who won the war against Germany. They took the greatest losses, inflicted the most casualties and, measured from the German high watermarks (Stalingrad and Moscow) advanced the greatest distance. Again, you are mistaken. The current war against ISIL and the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq were never defensive in nature. The US was always on the strategic offense.
