18-Year-Old Boy Died After Doctors Tried to Create a Vagina From Part of His Colon

A disturbing story from the UK reveals that a trans-identified teenager died from complications that arose from a surgery in which doctors tried to build him a vagina using parts of his colon.

A 2016 medical article reveals details about an 18-year-old boy's death due to complications that arose from a gender-affirming surgery, as reported by The Post Millennial. This paper was part of a linchpin Dutch study that laid the groundwork for child sex change operations. The boy was given puberty blockers at a young age because he claimed that he was truly a girl. These medications resulted in a lack of penile tissue developing in his body, which was the reason that surgeons removed part of his colon in order to perform a vaginoplasty, a surgery that essentially attempts to create a "neo-vagina" in male patients.

The patient was described as a "healthy" teenager, but within 24 hours of the surgery, he experienced necrotising fascitis, a rare bacterial infection that can spread quickly in the body and result in death. Doctors attempted to save him by administering intravenous antibiotics and "repeated surgical debridement" (which removes dead or infected tissue), but multiple of his organs went into failure and he died. Further investigation showed that the patient suffered a deadly strain of E. coli that likely originated from his own intestines.

To most conservatives, this seems like obvious insanity.
But for most of those on the whacky-doodle Left, they see nothing wrong with these surgeries and even celebrate them. They'll probably just dismiss the death of this boy as "an unfortunate accident but extremely rare", seeing all the potential risks and downsides as "worth the cost".

It's not news that major surgeries carry a risk of death. That's why they are not to be performed lightly. Gender dysphoria is a significant disease. Whether surgery is a good idea or not cannot be answered by the possibility of a bad outcome in surgery, but rather the average risks and benefits as determined by studies and clinical judgement of the specific situation, along with informed consent. There is also the issue of surgical techniques modifying the risks involved (perhaps using the colon isn't the best choice, but it's not too crazy, they use the small bowel to reconstruct bladders), and those will continue to evolve over time.

Would you describe it as a physical, or a mental disorder?

Isn't this really all about appearances, and wanting to look like some other specific group of people? And be accepted into a certain group in society. So a lot of this seems like undergoing harsh surgical procedures to conform to a social construct.

The other part of this story is that the British taxpayers were the ones paying for this surgery.

"In the UK, the National Health Service (NHS) provides free healthcare to all residents. This includes transgender surgery for those who meet the criteria. Transgender surgery can be very expensive, so the NHS funding is a vital lifeline for many people.

The number of sex operations on the NHS doubled to 172 in 2014, up from 83 in 2003. There were 169 other patients under the Trust’s care who were awaiting surgery. The average cost of gender reassignment surgery is £19,236. There is no set figure because support and surgery are both required, depending on the complexity of the condition.

How Much Does Transgender Surgery Cost Uk?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question as the cost of transgender surgery can vary greatly depending on the individual’s specific needs and goals. However, as a general guide, the cost of transgender surgery in the UK can start from around £5,000 and go up to £50,000 or more. Costs for treatment, especially for multiple surgeries, can be significant. Bottom surgery, or changing the genitalia, is estimated to cost men and women $25,600 in total."

He would certainly still be alive if he had believed in God.

procedures go wrong sadly, many die each year from forced circumcisions too, the parents do not give them the option, they force it on the babies

these babies would still be alive if religious folks stopped cutting up their private parts

I feel for those babies that had that forced on them and died, let them choose for themselves when older, leave the children's privates alone

I think his comparison is valid, although it could also easily be argued it is an argument from extremes, and thus obviously has a much lower level of validity than might appear on the surface.
(look up "appeal to extremes", and "logical extreme" )

I believe an analogy and comparison can be drawn, it is possible to do so.

Anyway, let's try to stay on the subject and not be drawn off on a tangent.

If you want to have that discussion you can do so in this thread: Circumcision and trans puberty blockers in children

exactly, the point is that any elective surgery can go badly, but we can "appeal to extremes" to try to ban elective surgeries of certain types, such as these

you handled the comparison well, I give you credit for that, not many here do

I'm not sure that makes sense to me, and I'm not sure that you correctly understood what I was saying.

I was saying that you were correct, that a comparison could be drawn between the two, but that a male having an artificial vagina surgically constructed out of his colon is a lot more extreme than a circumcision. So even though the same sort of argument could apply to both, it would not necessarily be entirely inconsistent for someone who is opposed to transgender surgery to decline to oppose circumcision.

FreshAir, I actually completely agree with your position, but am just trying to point out logic and sensible fairness in the debate.
(And to try to quickly shut you up from derailing this thread)

I wonder how prevalent it actually is. (I mean the ideology) Judging by the coverage in the media, one might think the majority of Americans are open to it.

It's already taken over many countries in Western and Northern Europe.

agree, but the 18-year-old had a choice, the baby did not - I am saying many elective surgeries can have bad outcomes

most 18-year-olds would not choose circumcision if they had the choice when older

most 18-year-olds would not choose transgender surgery when older

trying to attack all trans procedures would be like attacking all elective procedures as some have tragic outcomes

Insanity for sure, likely exacerbated (or outright caused) by the chemicals he was attacked with as a child.

You might be right. If a child is pumped full of female hormones from the very beginning, has never even experienced normal adolescence or puberty without those added hormones, then it might only seem natural to him that if he doesn't have a vagina something doesn't feel right.

Resectioning a colon and creating an artificial vagina is a pretty major and extreme surgery.
This is not an "ordinary" surgery.

The fact that some in this thread appear to be trying to compare it to an ordinary and routine surgery seems to be avoiding recognizing the gravity of it.

never said they were, elective surgeries come in all types, and all can have complications, such as an infection as in this case

Oh please. I can't think of any other elective surgery that comes close to being this extreme.

(Well, maybe abortion, but that's an entirely different topic, I'm sure you will agree)

I can think of many that the patient dies of an infection like in this case... it's rare, but not that rare

there was recently a case where a woman lost her arms and legs giving birth due to an infection

I also would not recommend anyone get this elective procedure or many others, but they are adults, their choice, not mine

Such a tragic loss of life of a person who could have been saved by getting proper counseling early on in life to clear up the confusion.

We're going to see more things like this as long as society keeps participating in this delusion and giving it some sort of validation

Getting a "proper" counseling is not so easy to get these days.

Probably a topic for another thread discussion.

I bet we see more people die from circumcision infections per year then from infections from these types of procedures

if only we educate people of the dangers beforehand of unneeded elective surgery, maybe lives could be saved

You are upset over this but dismissive of the higher complication rate seen from the plastic surgeries in Florida because they were…………. Spanish

    Do I have that right?

meanwhile it seems that the “Postmillenial” in its attempt to stir up outrage over this story left out a couple of things
