The way he released it allowed him to retain most of the revenue from the sales rather than handing it over to the industry. It also prevents it from being canceled/censored by Netflix, Amazon, Apple, etc.

$10M in the first week or so while maintaining the vast majority of the revenue as profits is a respectable number for a political documentary. This isn't a market that generally provides revenues in this ballpark, especially for an independently produced film. It will be more than enough to fund the next documentary while living very comfortably in the meantime.
