City in Austria Printed Local Currency
Worgl, like many other European towns and cities, was hit hard by the Great Depression. There was mass unemployment; four of the five local factories had closed, and the people were starving in the streets. Nobody had any money to buy anything. One of the features of an economic depression is that there is not enough money in circulation to ensure that people can meet their basic needs, and in the 1930s, the shortage of currency in many countries of the world became catastrophic.

The mayor of Worgl, together with local businessmen, decided to try to break this economic impasse by creating their own local currency. They printed and issued 60,000 Austrian shillings worth of local currency. These shillings could only be spent in Worgl, so they remained in the local community and were exchanged over and over again.

The positive impact was immediate and surprising to everyone. In only six weeks, unemployment disappeared, all the factories had reopened and everyone had food. For the inhabitants of Worgl, the economic depression was gone. This dramatic transformation became known as the “miracle of Worgl.” Surrounding towns, inspired by the success of Worgl, immediately started printing their own local currencies.

Sadly, the miracle did not last long. When the Austrian Central Bank heard about Worgl’s local currency, they initiated legal proceedings against the mayor and local businessmen. According to Austrian banking law, it was illegal for anyone except the Austrian Central Bank to issue money. The bank won the court case, and the mayor was ordered to shut down the local currency, which he did, under threat of imprisonment. The town then returned to the devastating economic depression of the 1930s, with all the human pain and suffering associated with this catastrophe. Factories closed, and once again, the people starved.

Alternative Currency in the U.S.
Irving Fisher, an American professor of economics at Yale University, visited Worgl before the local currency was suppressed and witnessed the ‘miracle’ firsthand. When he returned to the United States, Fisher spread the word by traveling and lecturing across the country, advocating the use of the Worgl ‘scrip’ everywhere. Inspired by his vision, hundreds of communities began issuing their own currency, and by 1934 there were over 1,000 local communities using ‘scrip’ throughout the U.S.

Every one of these communities experienced a tremendous rejuvenation of their local economies. They thrived while others suffered. Fisher then met with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, proposing the implementation of government-sanctioned local ‘scrip’ in every community in America. When FDR consulted with his top financial advisors and bankers, however, he was advised to shut all the ‘scrip’ systems down, which he did. Instead, he borrowed large amounts of money from bankers, at interest, and used it to pay for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and the other work-creation projects, which collectively came to be known as the ‘New Deal.’ So ended the last widespread use of a local currency within the U.S.

This pattern of economic collapse and re-emergence of local currencies has occurred thousands of times in many parts of the world. When these currencies have failed or have been suppressed, banks have not always been to blame. Sometimes, local currencies fail because they have been badly designed or implemented. Sometimes, people lose interest in them when the mainstream economy recovers. But they have always returned in one form or another during times of economic failure.

Our present world situation is uniquely different. Despite a relatively prosperous and stable world economy, a quiet monetary revolution has been occurring around the globe over the last 20 years. Awareness is growing about the flaws in our current monetary system, and people are re-creating viable alternatives. We are witnessing for the first time the worldwide creation of money systems designed by the people who use them, instead of by central banks.

Actually it took me about twenty six hours to drive from where I lived in Nova Scotia to where I now live in Mississauga.

Now I am facing an interesting decision perhaps tomorrow......

Mr. Peter McCallion withdrew from this election and endorsed Ms. Carolyn Parrish.

Ms. Parrish is certainly an outspoken and very interesting Canadian.

At this moment I am thinking very seriously about casting my ballot for her in the early polls.

Carolyn Parrish (born Karolina Janoszewska; October 3, 1946) is a politician in Ontario, Canada. She was a member of the House of Commons from 1993 to 2006 representing ridings in Mississauga, Ontario; initially as a Liberal Party MP, and then as an independent MP from 2004 to 2006 following her removal from the party. She became a city councillor for Mississauga City Council in 2006, and remained there until 2010, when she was defeated by Ron Starr. After a brief retirement from politics,[1] Parrish contested and won the position of Councillor for Ward 5 in the 2014 municipal election.[2] She resigned on March 15, 2024 to contest in the 2024 Mississauga mayoral by-election.

Parrish was born as Karolina Janoszewska and is of Polish heritage.[3] Her sister is romance novelist Marsha Canham.[4] Parrish studied at the University of Toronto, St. Michael's College, graduating in 1969, and became a high school teacher. She served as a Trustee on the Peel Board of Education from 1985 to 1990, and was chairperson from 1988 to 1990. She was first elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in the 1993 election and was re-elected in the three subsequent general elections of 1997, 2000and 2004. She ended her federal career representing the Mississauga, Ontario riding of Mississauga—Erindale as an independent Member of Parliament.

Criticism of U.S. President George W. Bush[edit]
Never promoted from the parliamentary backbench, Parrish was largely unknown nationally until the eve of the U.S.-led Invasion of Iraq in 2003. On her way out of a meeting on February 26, 2003, in a media scrumParrish was overheard on a boom mike saying, "Damn Americans, I hate those bastards!"[6] She later told the media that her comments were directed towards George W. Bush and his administration and not the American people as a whole. Members of the opposition Canadian Alliance party called for her to be punished by then Liberal leader and Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, but no disciplinary action occurred.

After the widespread media attention on her "America-bashing" incident, she remained popular in her home riding. After electoral redistribution leading up to the 2004 election, she faced fellow Liberal MP Steve Mahoney in a nomination battle and narrowly won.[7] She was re-elected with 54% of the vote in the general election, against 32% for her Conservative opponent.

In August 2004, Parrish again created controversy by referring to those supporting the North American missile defence proposal as "a coalition of the idiots," mocking the phrase "coalition of the willing" used by Bush describing the American-led alliance in the invasion of Iraq. Paul Martin, who had succeeded Chrétien as Prime Minister, asked her to use more tact and discretion when sharing her opinions about such subjects but stopped short of asking her to apologize. She responded by saying, "I was elected by thousands of people in my riding. They have known me for years. I think they like my style."[8]

Following the November U.S. election, she expressed shock at the re-election of George W. Bush. She said that "America is completely out of touch with the rest of the free world" and blamed this on collective "profound psychological damage" due to the September 11, 2001 attacks.[9] She was also quoted as saying, "I wouldn't guess what's next on his agenda, but it's probably not peace and love."[10] When Conservative Party members called on her to apologize for these remarks she said that such comments "are in the best traditions of free speech and independence of thought." These comments came just hours after Paul Martin warned his MPs in a private caucus meeting not to make incendiary comments in the wake of the U.S. election.[11] Parrish explained that she wasn't at the meeting, but that even if she had been, it wouldn't have stopped her from speaking her mind.

In October 2004, at the annual Parliamentary Press Gallery dinner in Ottawa, Martin joked about meeting with Bush and discussing the possibility of a crewed mission to Mars. "I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great if we could get a Canadian on board? If a Canadian could be sent tens of millions of miles into the dark void of space. And as we all as a nation watch on television and together say aloud, `Bon voyage, Carolyn Parrish!'

On November 17, 2004, clips of a skit for the CBC Television comedy series This Hour Has 22 Minutes were released, in which she stomped on a Bush doll and performed voodoo on its head, where she said "it would do the least damage." The full version was to air on November 19. The sketch caused outrage from Conservative members and prompted Martin to ask for a meeting with her.[13]

On November 18, a Canadian Press story quoted her as saying Martin, and those around him, could "go to hell" if they wanted her to stop making similar comments. She went on to say that she had no loyalty towards the Liberal Party and that if it were defeated in the next election, she "would not shed a tear," as she had felt betrayed by Martin's lack of help for her during her nomination and election campaigns.[14] In response to these comments, Martin, with the support of National Liberal Caucus chair Andy Savoy, expelled her from caucus, saying, "I told her that, while I have defended her right to express her views frankly, I cannot, as leader of our party and the government caucus, tolerate behaviour that demeans and disrespects others."[15]

On November 19, Parrish spoke to the press about her expulsion from caucus. She said that had she been in Martin's place, she would have done the same. She went on to say, however, that the party under Martin had fallen into disarray and that Martin and his inner circle ran the party using guerrilla warfare tactics. She said she would still vote with the Liberals on the vast majority of legislation, but would now be free to express her views without fear of reprisal

I personally am worried that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reading a script that is being passed to him that seems to be far too much in line with

During my own 2008 little campaign for the office of Municipal Councillor back in St. Mary's District in Guysborough County Nova Scotia an elderly gentleman phoned me and asked for me to meet him. He had been reading a very large book that gave a statistic that fitted perfectly with what I had written regarding the issue of climate change and the alternative theory of stabilization of the climate through deliberately turning deserts green through mega-scale desalination of sea water.

IT IS MY FIRM BELIEF THAT A CARBON TAX WILL DO ESSENTIALLY NOTHING TO PREVENT OCEAN LEVELS FROM RISING.

For these past several centuries it has been the ADDITION of H2O to the massive Antarctica Ice Sheet that has balanced out the

amount of H2O that is melting and cracking and sliding off the LAND BASED Greenland Ice Sheet and the world's land based glaciers.

A new poll indicates Mississauga's mayoral race could see a photo finish, with a yawning gap between frontrunner Carolyn Parrish and other leading candidates having all but vanished over the past few weeks.

The poll, released by Mainstreet Research Friday ahead of Mississauga's June 10 election, suggests Parrish now sits at 21 per cent support among decided and leaning voters. That puts the former councillor just one point ahead of Dipika Damerla, who sits at 20 per cent support. Alvin Tedjo sits at 17 per cent support, ahead of Stephen Dasko (15 per cent) and Brian Crombie (four per cent).

Five per cent of respondents said they planned to vote for another candidate, while 18 per cent remain undecided.

The poll surveyed 1,176 Mississauga voters June 3-4 through automated telephone interviews. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

"It could be a long night for Mississauga voters on Monday" Mainstreet Research President Quito Maggi said in a release.

Polling in early May showed Parrish, a former city councillor and MP, with a 17-point lead over her competitors. However that lead has shrunk over the past number of weeks.

Parrish was slammed for comments she made on transgender bathrooms and federal refugee programs following an early debate. She subsequently cited a "new style of politics" in the race and the safety of her staff in saying she would not take part in any further debates.

"This race appeared to be a foregone conclusion for Carolyn Parrish as 2024 began but is now a competitive race for the top four candidates," Maggi said. "It remains hers to lose at this point with advantages among those who already voted and among older voters who tend to show up to vote in municipal elections."

In addition to voting intention, the poll also asked voters who they think is best for Mississauga when it comes to building more housing and specifically, affordable housing.

Some 22 per cent said Tedjo would be best, while Parrish and Damerla each got 18 per cent of support on the file, Dasko 12 per cent and Crombie three per cent. Five per cent said someone else would be best for housing while 22 per cent were unsure.

Dasko led with 21 per cent on a question about the best candidate for job creation, followed by Parrish (19 per cent), Damerla (12 per cent), Tedjo (11 per cent) and Crombie (seven per cent).

Asked who would be best when it comes to transit, Parrish led with 18 per cent, with Dasko, Damerla and Tedjo tied at 17 per cent. Five per cent said someone else, while three per cent said Crombie.

Voters are set to head to the polls on Monday in the byelection to replace Bonnie Crombie, who stepped down as mayor after she won the Ontario Liberal Party leadership and earlier this year.

I ended up forced to move to Mississauga from Nova Scotia..... because CUPE threw me under the bus when I refused to take the C o v i d 19 vaccine...........

A Mississauga councillor is calling for the city be considered separately from Brampton when it comes to COVID-19 restrictions.

At a Nov. 23 meeting, Ward 5 Coun. Carolyn Parrish said that city council needs “to start pressuring” Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel Region’s medical officer of health, into “separating out” Mississauga from Brampton.

“There’s got to be more fine tuning to what we’re doing,” she said. “It’s not making sense to people, and people who are 100 per cent adhering to everything they’re supposed to do are being punished along with people who are not.”

The comments came as Mississauga and the rest of Peel Region entered the first day of a lockdown ordered by the province that forced the closure of gyms and limited retailers deemed non-essential to curbside pickup, among other measures.

Restaurants were also ordered to stop indoor and outdoor dining service.

While Brampton has had thousands more COVID-19 cases than its Peel counterparts thus far in the pandemic, there are several signs the virus is spreading at concerning levels in Mississauga.

Peel Health’s Nov. 20 epidemiological update showed Mississauga was averaging 117.5 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people from Nov. 8 to 14. That rate is almost three times higher than the maximum allowed to be in “orange” or “restrict” measures in the province’s latest COVID-19 framework.

Orange measures could allow 50 people inside gyms and restaurants if the weekly case rate is lower than 39.9 per 100,000 people.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said at the meeting that she’s previously spoken with Loh and Ontario Premier Doug Ford about a more targeted approach to COVID-19 restrictions in Mississauga.

“We have asked to be carved out, but the reality is we actually don’t deserve to be right now,” she said. “If we can get our cases under control a little more, I’d be happy to make that case. But right now, our cases are too high to be in a different category.”

City manager Paul Mitcham echoed Crombie’s comments and said the time has passed when Mississauga could argue for not being lumped into the overall Peel COVID-19 restrictions.

“On this one, at this time, I think given our cases that we’re appropriately in the lockdown,” he said.

Parrish pointed to COVID-19 test positivity rates from the first week of November, where Peel postal codes represented some of the highest in the province. She said Peel’s COVID-19 numbers are high, but Mississauga’s “are not terribly bad.”

“I’m tired of phone calls, I’m tired of people crying, I’m tired of people saying things to me that I agree with,” she said.

A recent report from International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES), an independent and provincially-funded health data group, showed COVID-19 positivity rates in Peel, including those in Mississauga, have been worsening.

It is my firm belief that the number one technological device to reduce atmospheric greenhouse gases has already been invented. It is the tree.

What is desperately needed at this time is not necessarily a new mechanical device but instead a paradigm shift in economic theory regarding monetary policy. We require a readily understandable explanation on how leaders in business and government can direct not only millions, but actually trillions of dollars of investment into combating global warming.

One of the most effective practical methods that could be put into place in the least amount of time would be dozens of the largest possible desalinization plants all along the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Huge quantities of fresh water could be dripped onto the Sinai and Sahara deserts and voila, well chosen species of newly planted fast growing trees could soon change the color of these relatively desolate areas, significantly reduce atmospheric CO2, positively affect local weather patterns and at the same time significantly counterbalance the increases in worldwide ocean levels as the polar ice caps melt. This will buy us some extra time and thus expand the " very brief window of opportunity to deal with climate change."

So who is going to finance the construction of all these massive installations not to mention the planting of all those seedling trees?

I believe that it is possible for you to do this yourself Mr. Branson. You have already created a Virgin currency unit/coupon which has astonishing long term potential. My wife Maria Jose just returned from a two week trip to the British VIRGIN Islands. It is theoretically possible to link your Virgin coupon with the national currency of a small nation and you could soon be playing around in macro-economics. Considering the volume of business being done through your Virgin Group I would submit that you already are.

Pope Benedict XVI may be in an even stronger position than you Mr. Branson to transform the world economy virtually overnight through the introduction of a new Vatican Currency Unit that could be linked with each and every national currency where the Vatican State is free to do business.

I plan to elaborate in great detail on these two major alternatives in a later writing but I felt that you and your staff should now see the simple explanation that I wrote up for applying this theory within a micro-economy to greatly reduce unemployment. Although combating global warming would seem to be a conflicting goal to job creation, there need be no dissonance when we all have a better grasp of the big picture.

We do know about what was done around the time when the political left set out to destroy President Abraham Lincoln and negate his rather brilliant Greenback Monetary Policy so perhaps we can learn something about what is happening now from the history of the events following the American Civil War?
