We are told that those making $400k+ are rich and should therefor pay more taxes. Just to put things in perspective, lets say this "rich" person lives in CA.

Uncle Sam takes $47,367.50 plus 35% of the amount over $207,350
The state takes $31,152.48 plus 11.3% of the amount over $359,407

After paying property tax, sales tax, gas tax, second gas tax, taxes disguised as registration fees, utility tax, and of course, the cruel tax, inflation,

    how much is left?

The government is already taking half this workers income. Can anyone justify taking more?

You are presuming the tax filer has absolutely zero legal deductions which is NEVER the case.

To the AVERAGE AMERICAN rank and file employee $400,000 is a very wealthy salary.

I understand the view from their perspective. How do you justify taking more when they already take half. (More or less)

    For what purpose?

I think @ Doofenshmirtz is referring to taxable income which, to the uninitiated, comes after deductions.

The government needs to start paying the bills and the debt. I don't advocate for more spending but someone needs to pay the tax and taking money from normal people is harder on them than taking it from those who have more than double five times what is actually needed to survive. Also, if you live in CA, you deserve 100% tax rate for choosing to stay in that **** hole.

Ha! Good one! It does not appear that tax increases are used to pay down the debt. I don't see rewarding irresponsibility as justification.

There is a simple solution for this problem:

    Defund police.
    Defund military.
    Defund NASA.
    Defund health services.
    Defund Social Security.
    Defund social services.
Defund the Senate and the Congress.
    Defund schools and universities.
    Defund CIA, FBI, NSI.
    Defund ……

And there will be no need for taxes.

And despite our high taxes we cannot provide clean safe lead free drinking water to the majority of our citizens,

I am in total agreement with you. I think what you are referring is tax freedom day. Even for the average Joe in America Tax freedom day comes around mid April to May so basically a third of your earning or more will go to the government factoring all taxes. The interesting thing is for other Countries like Canada, Finland, Denmark, etc... that day is around mid year.

The problem is how do we fix it. People think the issue is spending and while I would like to see fiscally responsible spending, even if some president was able to do it the problem would still exist. Have you looked at where a tax dollar goes.

    https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/where-do-our-federal-tax-dollars-go

The biggest problem is a lot of that spending is pretty much fixed.

    1. We have to service the debt 8% and rising
    2. Social Security. All the old farts screwed the younger generation by supposedly saving for their retirement and then spending those savings on goodies and now want the younger generation to pay for it. 23%.
    3. Medicare, etc... same scam as SS. Spent all of the money and expect the younger generation to pay. 23%
    4. Defense. 16% We pay something like 7 times what the rest of the world does combine?

We cut defense all of the lobbyist complain. We cut SS or Medicare all of the seniors complain. That is over 60% of your tax dollars right there. Another 10% is for the debt and that number will just go up. Basically 70% of your tax dollar is untouchable so we have the remaining 30% to fight over. Transportation, education, safety net programs etc...

Where did you get that? The vast majority of US citizens do get safe drinking water.

The lead free part is a red herring. Almost all drinking water contains a safe amount of lead. It is nearly impossible to remove all of it.

States don't need to. California, however, has decided it wants to. It is only fair that Californians pay for that satellite instead of some farmer in Iowa or pole dancer in Florida.

lead in drinking water comes from lead pipes in people homes. lead pipes don't leach lead into the water flowing through them unless theres a chemical in the water that leaches the lead from the pipes into the water, such as fluoride or chlorine. Are you suggesting the govt should replace the lead pipes in privately owned homes, or are you suggesting we should stop treating their water with fluoride or chlorine?

They are of course working on that. The costs of financing homeless is well over 100K in some cities. The city of SF is paying $20K for electronic trash cans now to help hold down the garbage issue. Expense of the street-poop cleaning process is skyrocketing. The need for money to spend on these things is like the need for drugs- they never get enough. As they raise taxes and people decide working is a waste of time, they create more homeless, they import more illegals, and thus more need for money. Working people are like cows to the state of California. You milk them dry, then demand they don't fart and pollute the atmosphere.
It used to be called the land of fruits and nuts, but clearly the nuts have prevailed.

That is the issue here. While other countries have around 50% tax rate they receive education, healthcare, childcare…

Americans are being taxed close to 50% but have the most expensive medical system in the world and have to pay premiums, meet deductibles — have some of the most expensive childcare and educational systems in the world paid out of pocket plus all of the miscellaneous taxes. In reality we are one of the highest taxed people on the earth (unless you are a billionaire it seems)

If only we could figure out where all of our money is going… it is a mystery

    True, Rod!

But apparently- the nuts, even those that are part fruit... are running the show.
Spend over 100K per person on homeless people with no gain, and the problem growing?
Tell farmers to bag cow farts?
Run off their top taxpayers by making the business climate impossible to survive?

These people are the cutting edge of insanity.
And- they think the rest of us should follow their example....
