Mohammed Haydar Zammar, age 51,has been freed from Syrian custody, as a result of a prisoner exchange between the Assad government, and one of the Salafist groups operating in that country.

Zammar, who was born in Syria, immigrated to Germany at age 10, and-shortly thereafter, began a career as a valued member of Al Qaeda: fighting in Afghanistan -twice, and in Bosnia.

On return to Germany, he became a leader in the Hamburg Cell : recruiting volunteers for suicidal missions, helping them set up operations, training them, and acting as paymaster. German authorities were well aware of his activity, but noted no German laws were being violated.

Zammar reportedly recruited Mohammed Atta - leader of the 9/11 "Planes Operation" , and helped him set up his operation in the US.

A question has been raised in some quarters : How many of the 9/11 jihadists - including Atta-were recruited by entrapment in homosexual activities with certain members of the Hamburg Cell.

Given the usual penalty in many Muslim countries, being offered a chance at redemption via suicide mission might well have seemed attractive...but we shall never know.
