My speech classmate once gave a 3 minute speech about how guns don't kill people and that these shooters are all just frustrated and unloved. He said bring nice does not merely mean not harming someone but actually showing you care. He said our fast paced society leaves many people isolated on the sidelines and ready to explode and feeling like a number. How much merrit do you think that argument has? I know there are people who will burn your car down in retaliation for you evicting them. So only so much niceness can reasonable be shown before we must crack down with force. But could we reduce mass shootings to pre-2000 levels just by being a bit nicer to each other?
Not a bad thing. These, of course, were teachings of Christianity before the progressive movement to denounce it.
Another good question is whether we are more likely to be hit by a driver who is texting or be killed in a mass shootings. Maybe the shooters mother was killed by a teen who was texting. While there are 30,000 gun deaths per year, most are suicide or gang related. The school shootings are 40 x 20 or about 1000 students per year. Yet the country is more focused on this than on texting crashes or bicyclists hit. I ride by bike memorials all the time and knew a former cyclist with a cane.
Such a naive and clueless view of the world. "Being nice" to lunatics does not fix them. They will hate you for being nice. This garbage goes back to the liberal belief that all human beings are actually peacelful and loving creatures. Poppycock! Human nature has a dark side that we just have to deal with.
humans have been killing each other for all sorts of reasons since we climbed out of the primordial ooze, and we will continue killing each other until the sun burns out. To blame our less than civilized inclinations on the tools we use is quite possibly the dumbest, most deceitful, most politically self-serving line of bullshit ever.
Not just social media. There are many internet trolls who deliberately scare and anger people with lies and can't be sued unless they directly harm a specific person. But who gets to be judge of who lies and who is telling the truth? Free speech. Even our own government uses tax payer money to spread lies that have real consequences, misrepresenting that only 2-8% of crime accusation are false, when that is actually just the minimum number we know to be false. Plenty of other heated "facts" out there to get people angry, such as stating that "80% of anti-abortion choice legislators are male" to make pro-choice women hate men.
